The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks stayed alive in the District 4B Tournament with a win over the Baltic River Dawgs on Sunday, July 26th in Humboldt. The #5 Gamecocks were beaten by #4 Canova in the opening round on Saturday, July 25th.
Canova 17, Gamecocks 10
A string of runs over five innings helped the Canova Gang to an opening round win over the Gamecocks on Saturday. Canova scored two runs in the bottom of the first for an earl 2-0 lead. Humboldt/Hartford got one run in the top of the second and then had a big six-run top of the third for a 7-2 lead. Canova plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth and then tied the game, 7-7, with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Gang scored four more in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 11-7. The Gamecocks pulled within a run, 11-10, with three runs in the top of the seventh. Canova would score two in the bottom of the seventh and then added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Joe Hanisch had three hits and four RBIs. Kyle Konechne had three hits, two of them doubles, and two RBIs. Chad Morrison added two singles with an RBI. Jonah Rechtenbaugh had a double and single. Cam Quigley had two singles. Devon Garry and Matt Thorson each had a single with an RBI. Hunter DenBoer, Broc Haldeman, JD Kirchner, and Landry Knight all had a single.
Gamecocks 12, Baltic 2
In an elimination game on Sunday, the Gamecocks grabbed an early lead to defeat Baltic to stay in the tournament. The Gamecocks had a run in the bottom of the first and six more in the bottom of the second for an early 7-0 lead. Baltic scored a run in the top of the fourth, but Humboldt/Hartford added four more in the bottom of the inning for an 11-1 score. Each team scored a run in the sixth. The game ended on the 10-run rule after the top of the seventh.
Hanisch and Svoboda each had two hits and two RBIs. Rechtenbaugh had a single and two RBIs. Konechne had a home run and an RBI. Garry had a double with an RBI. DenBoer ended with a single and an RBI. Thorson and Broc Haldeman each had a single. Caden Alfson had an RBI. Kirchner pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits and seven walks with 10 strikeouts.
