The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks earned a big Cornbelt League win over Dell Rapids PBR in Dell Rapids on Tuesday, July 7th. They held off a PBR rally to earn a 9-5 victory.
The first three innings were scoreless. Blake Svoboda broke the tie with an RBI single in the top of the fourth. JD Kirchner drove home two more with a double, and Drew Talberg followed with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead. PBR got one run in the bottom of the inning.
Cam Quigley added to the Gamecock lead with a two-run single in the top of the sixth for a 6-1 score. Chad Morrison had an RBI single in the top of the seventh, and Gunnar Alfson had an RBI double in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 8-1. PBR got a grand slam home run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 8-5, but Devon Garry scored on an error in the top of the ninth to add an insurance run.
Quigley finished with two hits and two RBIs. Svoboda had a single and double with an RBI. Broc Haldeman also had a single and double. Kirchner added a double and two RBIs. Alfson had a double with an RBI. Talberg and Morrison each had a single with an RBI. Garry also had a hit.
Svoboda pitched five innings and allowed an unearned run on two hits and four walks with nine strikeouts. Caden Alfson pitched an inning walking two and striking out three. Kirchner tossed three innings and allowed four earned runs on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.
