Gamecocks Heading Back to State Tournament

The Humboldt Gamecocks will be heading back to the amateur State B Tournament.  They defeated the Flandreau Blue Teal 16-11 in the District 4B Tournament in Madison on Thursday, July 31st to qualify for the state tournament.

The Gamecocks opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  The Blue Teal tied the game in the top of the second, 3-3, with three runs of their own.  Humboldt scored another three runs in the bottom of the second and then added three more in the bottom of the third for an early 9-3 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Flandreau got one run in the top of the fifth to make the score 9-4.  The Gamecocks seemed to have put the game away after the bottom of the fifth when they scored five times to extend the lead to 14-4.  They added another run in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 15-4.  The Blue Teal, however, would not go away quietly.  They rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh to keep the game going and close the game to 16-10.  The Gamecocks got a run in the bottom of the seventh, and Flandreau scored only one more time in the top of the eighth.

Kyle Konechne had four hits, including a home run, and five RBIs.  Jonah Rechtenbaugh had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Cam Quigley also had three hits, including a double, with one RBI.  Blake Svoboda had two hits and two RBIs.  Devon Garry added two singles and an RBI.  Borc Haldeman had a double with an RBI.  Joe Hanisch and Chad Moarrison each had a hit and an RBI.
