Trojans Pull Away from Tanagers in Second Half

West Central put together a complete road performance Friday night, October 16th, in Vermillion, building a 20-0 halftime lead and pulling away in the second half for a 34-6 win over the Tanagers.

The Trojans got on the board first in the opening quarter, as Chase Stromer capped a drive with an 11-yard touchdown run at the 9:06 mark. The extra point attempt came up short, but West Central had the early 6-0 edge.

After a scoreless stretch, the Trojans found their rhythm through the air late in the second quarter.  With 4:47 left before halftime, Beckett Everson dialed up a big play and hit Dylan Bettcher for a 41-yard touchdown pass. John Goehring added the extra point to make it 13-0.  West Central wasn’t done. In the final minute of the half, Everson went back to the air and connected with Keenan Hackett for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 0:23 remaining. Goehring’s kick was good again, and the Trojans took a 20-0 lead into the locker room.
Vermillion showed some life early in the third quarter, striking on a 98-yard touchdown pass at the 6:07 mark. The extra point attempt missed, keeping West Central in front 20-6.  Any momentum the Tanagers gained didn’t last long.
West Central answered in the fourth quarter with two more explosive scoring plays. At 10:45, Everson found Bettcher again, this time for a 75-yard touchdown pass, and Goehring’s extra point pushed the lead to 27-6.  The Trojans put the finishing touches on the win at 4:49, when Everson hit Hayden Heier for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Goehring stayed perfect on the night, and West Central walked out of Vermillion with a 34-6 victory.
