Defense Leads Trojan Girls to Season Opening Win

The West Central Trojan defense led them to a 49-31 win over the Baltic Bulldogs to open the 2022-2023 girls basketball season on Tuesday, December 6th.  The defense forced 32 Baltic turnovers, 20 of those in the first half, while recording 19 steals.

The Trojans held just a two-point lead, 7-5, at the end of the first quarter.  The offense got rolling in the second quarter as West Central pushed the lead to 24-11 by halftime.  The defense held the Bulldogs to just eight points in the third quarter, and the Trojans led 39-19 after three quarters of play.  West Central scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to lead 43-19, which was the largest of the game, with 6:30 left in the game.

The Trojans shot 27% (16-59) overall, 25% (7-28) from three-point area, and 77% (10-13) from the free-throw line.  Baltic, meanwhile, shot 37% (10-27) from the field, but just 8% (1-12) from three-point area.  The Bulldogs were 10-15 from the free-throw line.

Jazelle Jarding finished with 15 points and four rebounds.  Tessa VanOverbeke added 11 points and three rebounds.  Molli Thornton had nine points and four steals.  Jaci Travis had four points and five steals.  Cambell Fischer finished with just two points, but had 14 rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

West Central (1-0) will travel to Vermillion on Tuesday, December 13th.
