The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team won their first two matches of the season at the Irene/Wakonda Tournament on Saturday, August 27th while losing one match. Tri-Valley then fell to the Dakota Valley Panthers on Tuesday, August 30th.
The Mustangs opened the tournament with a win against the Scotland Highlanders. Tri-Valley won the match in three sets. They won the first set 25-16, lost the second 22-25, but won the third by a score of 25-22.
Tri-Valley then lost to the Canistota Hawks in three sets. Tri-Valley lost the first set 16-25. The Mustangs won the second set 25-16 to force the third set, but the Hawks won the final set in extra time by a score of 26-24.
The final match of the tournament was against the Kimball/White Lake WiLdKats. Tri-Valley won in straight sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-21.
Dakota Valley 3, Tri-Valley 0
After the tournament, Tri-Valley hosted the Dakota Valley Panthers on Tuesday, August 30th.
The Panthers got out to a quick lead to start the match. Dakota Valley led 11-4 and continued to push the lead to 18-6 before winning the first set 25-10. The Panthers started quick in the second set, this time taking a 6-1 lead. The Mustangs fought back and took the lead themselves 10-8. Dakota Valley, however, then went on a 14-3 run for a 22-13 lead. The Panthers won the second set 25-16.
The two teams went back and forth in the first part of the third set, and the score was tied 5-5. The Panthers slowly built a 14-7 lead which was large enough that Tri-Valley couldn’t make a comeback. Dakota Valley won the third set 25-17 to win the match.
Cheyenne Hanson finished with 11 digs on defense. Ava Pearson and Emery Pearson both had three kills each. Nevaeh Grann led the team with 10 set assists. Megan Wenzel had two blocks, and Maddie Wenzel had two ace serves.
The Mustangs will host Lennox on Thursday, September 1st.
