Mustang Girls Win Overtime Thriller at Milbank

The Tri-Valley Mustangs (9-10) saw a 14-point fourth-quarter lead slip away at Milbank, but the Mustangs recovered and earned a 60-57 win in overtime over the Bulldogs on Saturday, February 11th.

The Mustangs looked to be headed to a comfortable victory through three quarters of play.  Tri-Valley led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, 28-19 at halftime, and 40-29 at the end of the third quarter.  The Mustangs then started the four quarter on a 5-2 run for a 45-31 lead.  That’s when Milbank started storming back.  The Bulldogs outscored Tri-Valley 19-2 and led 50-47 with second remaining.  Mattie Huwe nailed a three-point shot from the left corner with :05 on the clock to tie the game 50-50 and force overtime.

The two teams went back and forth in the first two and half minutes of the overtime period.  The Bulldogs led 57-55 before Madelyn Wenzel hit a three from the right corner to put Tri-Valley ahead 58-57.  Lauren Grinde made two free throws late to push the lead to 60-57.  Milbank’s game-tying attempt was short at the buzzer.

Wenzel finished with 16 points and four rebounds.  Grinde added 14 points, two rebounds, and three steals.  Steph Buchmann had 10 points and two rebounds.  Huwe had eight points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Hillary Hastings andd Hailey Sorenson both had six points each.
