Madison Rallies in Volleyball Win at Tri-Valley

The Madison Bulldogs rallied to win three straight sets after dropping the first one to the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Thursday, September 23rd.

Tri-Valley, playing in their fourth straight home match, took the opening set by a score of 25-21.  The Bulldogs, however, rallied to win the next three to win the match.  Madison won by set scores of 25-12, 25-17, and 25-17.

Jenna Hanson had 16 digs and two ace serves.  McKenzie Atwood had 11 digs.  Nevaeh Grann had three ace serves and three set assists.  Erica Bicknase tallied six kills and three blocks.  Megan Wenzel had four kills.  Maddie Wenzel finished with a team-high four assists.  Brooklyn Steiben led the team with 10 set assists.

The Mustangs head back on the road on Thursday, September 30th.  They travel to Salem to play the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars.

Mustang Volleyball Falls at Home to Canton

After three straight five-set match losses for Tri-Valley, the Mustangs were looking to get over that hump and into the win column at home on Tuesday, September 21st.  The Mustangs hosted the Canton C-Hawks in a Dak-12 Conference match, but Canton got the win in straight sets.  They won by scores of 25-12, 25-22, and 25-16.

Nevaeh Grann finished with eight set assists and six digs.  Hannah West had four digs and three ace serves.  Brookelyn Steiben had a total of seven set assists and two ace serves.  Erica Bicknase had a team-high three kills, while Hillary Hastings had two kills.  Megan Wenzel had seven blocks, and Ava Pearson had six.

Tri-Valley (0-9) will host Madison on Thursday, September 23rd.

Mustang Volleyball Falls Short of Win Against Dell Rapids at Home

The Dell Rapids Quarriers and Tri-Valley Mustangs had quite the battle on Thursday, September 16th at Tri-Valley High School.  The two teams traded set wins and needed five sets to determine the winner.

Tri-Valley opened the match with a 25-21 victory.  Dell Rapids came back and cruised through the second set for a 25-12 win.  The third set went to the Mustangs by a 25-18 score.  Once again Dell Rapids cruised through another set, winning the fourth 25-13.  With the match tied 2-2, it came down to the fifth set.  Dell Rapids came out victorious with a 15-12 score.

This was the third match in a row the Mustangs have fallen in five sets.

Hillary Hastings had four kills, and Megan Wenzel had three on the night.  Wenzel also had seven total blocks.  Ava Pearson finished with three.  Jenna Hanson had a team-high 10 digs, and Hannah West had eight digs.  McKenzie Atwood had four ace serves.  Nevaeh Grann had 10 set assists in the match.  Brookelyn Stieben had nine set assists and one ace serve.

The Mustangs (0-8) look to get that first win of the season at home against Canton on Tuesday, September 21st.

Mustangs Fall Short Again in Five Sets

Playing in their first home match of the season, the Tri-Valley Mustangs played their second straight five-set match on Thursday, September 9th.  And for the second time in a row in a five-set match, the Mustangs fell just short of their first win.  The Vermillion Tanagers won by set scores of 16-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-16, and 15-10.

Hannah West and Kenzie Atwood both had a strong defensive match.  West finished with 15 digs, and Atwood had 13 digs.  Erica Bicknase led the team with six kills.  Megan Wenzel had four kills.  Meg. Wenzel also had four solo and four assisted blocks.  Maddie Wenzel had two solo blocks.  Nevaeh Grann had 11 set assist, and Brookelyn Stieben finished with nine set assists.  Grann also led the team with two ace serves.  West and Stieben both had one ace serve.

Tri-Valley will host the Dell Rapids Quarriers on Thursday, September 16th for their next match.

Tri-Valley Drops Exciting Match to Lennox

The Tri-Valley Mustangs played an exciting, five-set match in Lennox against the Orioles on Thursday, September 2nd.  Unfortunately the Mustangs couldn’t get the win.

Tri-Valley took the first two sets of the match.  They won the first one 25-19.  It took an extra point in the second set, but the Mustangs won 26-24 for a 2-0 lead in the match.  Lennox fought back with a 25-20 win in the third set.  The fourth set again needed extra points as the two teams were tied 25-25.  Lennox got the final two points for the 27-25 win to force the fifth set.  Lennox won the final set 15-10 to take the match.

Madelyn Wenzel had 10 kills for the Mustangs.  Megan Wenzel had nine, while Hillary Hastings and Lauren Grinde both had seven kills each.  Hastings had two blocks.  Mad. Wenzel and Erica Bicknase both had a block.  Nevaeh Grann led the team with three ace serves.  Brookelyn Stieben, Meg. Wenzel, and Hannah West all had two aces each.  West finished with a team-high 24 digs on the night.  McKenzie Atwood added 14 digs, and Stieben had 13 digs.  Allyson Haga and Grann both finished with 12 digs.  Bicknase also had 10 digs.  Grann had 18 set assists in the match, while Stieben had 13 set assists.

The Mustangs (0-6) will look to get their first win of the season when they host Vermillion on Thursday, September 9th.

Tri-Valley Volleyball Falls on the Road

The Tri-Valley Mustangs, who have yet to play a home match this season, took a tough loss on Tuesday, August 31st.  The Mustangs played the #2 ranked Dakota Valley Panthers and lost in straight sets by scores of 16-25, 13-25, and 7-25.

Nevaeh Grann had two kills, three set assists, four digs, and a block in the match.  Madelyn and Megan Wenzel both had three kills each.  Megan also had two blocks.  Brooklyn Stieben led the team with four set assists.  Hannah West had a team-high seven digs, and Erica Bicknase finished with three ace serves.

The Mustangs (0-5) will have another road match on Thursday, September 2nd.  They will travel to Lennox to play the Orioles.

Mustang Volleyball Plays Tough at Flandreau Tourney

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team took part in the Flandreau Tournament on Saturday, August 29th.  The Mustangs played Baltic, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland, and Flandreau during the tournament.

The Mustangs lost to Baltic in straight sets by scores of 12-25 and 18-25.  Megan Wenzel had four kills, and Madelyn Wenzel had three kills in the match.  Brookelyn Stieben and Nevaeh Grann both had five set assists.  Grann also had five digs.

Tri-Valley played a close match against the Raiders.  Tri-Valley won the first set 25-22, but lost the next two by scores of 23-25 and 17-25.  Erica Bicknase led the team in kills with 10.  M. Wenzel and Lauren Grinde both had five kills each.  M. Wenzel also had four ace serves.  Stieben finished with 15 set assists and two ace serves.  Hannah West led the team with eight digs.

The Mustangs also played a three-set match against Flandreau.  Again Tri-Valley won the opening set at 25-19, but lost the final two sets by scores of 21-25 and 17-25.  Bicknase had six kills, and Grann had five kills along with eight set assists.  Stieben had 10 set assists and four ace serves.  McKenzie Atwood had 15 digs and two ace serves.

Tri-Valley will travel to Dakota Valley to play the Panthers on Tuesday, August 31st.

Mustang Volleyball Season Ends in Regions

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team had their 2020 season end in the Region 3A tournament on Thursday, November 5th.  The Mustangs fell to the #1 seed Sioux Falls Christian Chargers in straight sets.

The Mustangs played the Chargers close early in the opening set.  Sioux Falls Christian only led by two points at 9-7, but the Chargers then went on an 8-1 run for a 17-8 lead.  Sioux Falls Christian ended the first set with a 25-17 victory.

Sioux Falls Christian got out to a quick 8-3 lead in the second set.  They carried that momentum all the way to a 25-11 win for a 2-0 set lead.  The Mustangs found themselves trailing by eight points at 14-5 early in the third set.  Tri-Valley went on a 6-1 run to pull within four points at 15-11, but the rally fell short as the Chargers took the set 25-16 to win the match.

Tri-Valley finishes with an overall season record of 11-11.

Tri-Valley Advances in Region 3A after 3rd Win over West Central

The Tri-Valley Mustangs and West Central Trojans met for the third time this season on Tuesday, November 3rd at Tri-Valley High School.  This meeting was in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament, and all three meetings have occurred in the last 17 days with the Mustangs winning the first two.

Tri-Valley got out to a quick 5-1 lead in the opening set of the match.  The Mustangs maintained a two-to-three point lead before extending it to 15-9 midway through the set.  The lead grew to 10 points at 23-13, and Tri-Valley took the first set 25-13.

The momentum carried into the second set as the Mustangs scored the first six points for a 6-0 lead.  West Central pulled within three points early in the set, but the Mustangs never lost the lead and eventually won in the second set 25-17 for a 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs once again grabbed an early lead in the third set at 6-2.  West Central, however, was able to get the set tied at 12-12.  The set was within a point for much of the remainder of the game.  With the score tied 20-20, the Trojans finished the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-21 and force a fourth set.

The fourth set started close as both teams were tied 4-4.  The Mustangs then went on a 7-1 run for an 11-5 lead.  That run gave all the momentum to Tri-Valley.  The lead grew to 19-9, and the Mustangs won the set 25-15 to win the match.

West Central was led by Cassidy Siemonsma with 11 kills and four blocks.  Jenna Lueth had 14 digs, and Jocelyn Nilson added 10 digs.  Rachel Bucher had three ace serves.  Alaina Murphy added three blocks, and Brooke Opitz finished with 17 set assists.

Kaitlyn Mohnen had 15 digs and 10 kills for the Mustangs.  Blayne Gacke had 13 digs, nine kills, and seven ace serves.  Jessica Masgain had three blocks and two ace serves.  Grace Shildhauer added 20 set assists in the match.

The Trojans end their season with an overall record of 6-15.

Tri-Valley moves on to the next round of the Region 3A tournament.  They will plat at #1 Sioux Falls Christian in a SoDak16 Qualifier match on Thursday, November 5th at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs Beat Trojans for Second Time this Season

Playing against each other for the second time in less than 10 days, the Tri-Valley Mustang and the West Central Trojan volleyball teams clashed on Monday, October 26th at Tri-Valley High School.

The Mustangs took the match in straight sets again, this time by scores of 25-18, 27-25, and 25-15.

Tri-Valley got things rolling early as they jumped out to a 7-3 lead.  The lead quickly grew to eight at 13-5.  The Trojans battled to within two points at 17-15.  The Mustangs responded to push the lead back to five points at 22-17 and eventually winning the set 25-18.

The Mustangs again got to an early lead in the second set.  Tri-Valley led 11-5.  West Central then went on a 12-1 run to take a 17-12 lead.  Tri-Valley pulled within a point a couple of times, but West Central was able to keep the lead and held a 23-20 advantage.  The Trojans were at set point at 24-22, but Tri-Valley tied the score at 24-24.  West Central got the next point for a 25-24 lead to force set point again.  Tri-Valley then scored the next three points to get the come-from-behind 27-25 win.

The momentum of that win propelled Tri-Valley to another early lead at 10-5.  West Central scored four in a row to pull within a point at 10-9.  The Trojans tied the set at 11-11.  The Mustangs then scored the next five points for a 16-11 lead.  Tri-Valley then closed out the set on a 9-4 run for the 25-15 win.

The Trojans were led by Brooke Opitz with 23 set assists, 10 digs, three blocks, and two ace serves.  Cassidy Siemonsma had nine kills and five blocks.  Jenna Lueth finished with 14 digs.  Grace Harden had five kills.

Blayne Gacke had 13 digs, six kills, and five ace serves for the Mustangs.  Kaitlyn Mohnen had 13 digs, eight kills and six blocks.  Hannah West also finished with 13 digs.  Tabor Teel had nine blocks.  Grace Schildhauer had a team-high 18 set assists, and Brookelyn Stieben had eight set assists.

This was the final regular season match for the Mustangs.  Tri-Valley finishes their regular season with a record of 9-10.  West Central will finish their regular season at home on Tuesday, October 27th against Parker.

The two teams look to be headed for another match against one another in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament.
