Trojan and Mustang Volleyball Seasons End in Region 3A Tournament

Both the West Central Trojan and Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball seasons came to an end in the opening round of the Region 3A Tournament.

The Trojans entered the tournament as the #7 seed and traveled to Garretson to play the #2 seed Blue Dragons.  The match was held on Monday, November 1st.  Gararetson won in straight sets by scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-18.  West Central’s season ends with an overall record of 7-19.

Tri-Valley was the #8 seed in the tournament and played #1 Sioux Falls Christian in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, November 2nd.  The Chargers also won in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-9, and 25-10.  The Mustangs finished the season with a record of 1-23.

No stats were available for either match at the time of writing.

Mustang Volleyball Gets First Win on Final Match of Regular Season

The Tri-Valley Mustangs got their first win of the season on the final regular season match on Monday, October 25th.  Tri-Valley traveled to West Central and earned a four-set win over the Trojans by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 19-25, and 25-21.

Erica Bicknase had a team-high 13 kills.  Hillary Hastings, Lauren Grinde, and Madelyn Wenzel all had five kills each.  Jenna Hanson added four kills.  Nevaeh Grann and Brookelyn Stieben both had three ace serves.  Grann also had 16 set assists, while Stieben had 14.  Four players had double-figure digs in the match.  Jenna Hanson had a team-high 18 digs, Allyson Haga had 17, and Stieben and Hannah West both had 10 digs.

Head coach Justin Nihart said, “A lot of credit for the win can go to my two senior defensive specialists Ally Haga and Jenna Hanson for the tremendous effort and grit they showed in the back row by constantly being on the floor and diving for balls.  Also, Erica Bicknase led the charge for our offense.”

The Mustangs finished the regular season with a record of 1-22.  Tri-Valley will begin Region 3A tournament play on Tuesday, November 2nd.

Mustangs Hold Final Home Match of 2021 Season

The Tri-Valley Mustangs had their final regular season home match of the volleyball season on Friday, October 22nd.  The Mustangs hosted Tea Area and also recognized their seasons.  This year’s seniors are Hannah West, Brooklin Hoek,  Allyson Haga, Jenna Hanson, and Alivia Grann.  The Titans won the match in straights sets by scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-17.

Hanson and Haga both had eight digs each to lead the team.  Haga also had two ace serves, while Hoek had one.  Megan Wenzel finished with five kills, and Erica Bicknase had three.  Madelyn Wenzel and four blocks.  Me. Wenzel finished with two.  Brookelyn Stieben had nine set assists, and Nevaeh Grann finished with four.

Tri-Valley will finish the 2021 regular season on the road at West Central on Monday, October 25th.

Tri-Valley Volleyball Plays Close Match Against Lennox

Tri-Valley played a close match against the Lennox Orioles on Monday, October 18th.  The match went four sets, but the Orioles won by set scores of 25-19, 18-25, 25-14, and 25-19.

Megan Wenzel had a team-high eight kills.  Madelyn Wenzel had four kills.  Ally Haga finished with 15 digs, and Jenna Hanson had 11 digs.  Me. Wenzel finished with four blocks.  Brooklyn Stieben had seven set assists, while Nevaeh Grann had five set assists.  Hannah West had two ace serves.

The Mustangs will travel to Mt Vernon to play the Titans on Tuesday, October 19th.

Mustang Volleyball Finishes 0-3 at Dak-12 Tournament

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team played in the Dak-12 Conference Tournament in Tea on Saturday, October 16th.  The Mustangs finished the day 0-3.

Canton defeated the Mustangs by scores of 25-20 and 25-23.  Hillary Hastings and Ava Pearson both had four kills in the match.  Erica Bicknase had three kills.  Megan Wenzel had two ace serves.  Madelyn Wenzel finished with three blocks, and Pearson had two.  Nevaeh Grann tallied seven set assists, while Brookelyn Stieben had six assists.  Hannah West had a team-high six digs, and Hastings and Jenna Hanson both had four digs.

Tri-Valley fell to the West Central Trojans by scores of 25-16 and 25-22.  Me. Wenzel and Ma. Wenzel both had four kills.  Lauren Grinde had three kills.  Allyson Haga had a team-high three ace serves.  Grann finished with seven set assists, and Stieben had four assists.  Haga also had seven digs, Stieben had six, and Hanson had five digs.

Vermillion also defeated the Mustangs 25-20 and 25-19.  Ma. Wenzel and Bicknase both had four kills.  Haga and West each had two ace serves.  Grinde and Ma. Wenzel had two blocks.  Hanson, Grann, and Haga all finished with five digs.  Hastings and Stieben both had four digs.  Stieben led the team with three set assists.

Tri-Valley Drops Back-to-Back Matches

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Baltic Bulldogs on Monday, October 11th in Baltic.  The Bulldogs won by set scores of 25-15, 25-14, and 25-10.

Megan Wenzel had five kills to lead the team.  Madeelyn Wenzel and Erica Bicknase both had four kills each.  Allyson Haga finished with seven digs.  Nevaeh Grann had seven set assists along with five digs.  Brooklyn Stieben added five set assists and three digs.

The Mustangs then hosted the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Tuesday, October 12th.  The Chargers also won in straight sets by scores 25-6, 25-11, and 25-8.

Haga had a team-high eight digs and an ace serve.  Hannah West had five digs and two ace serves.  Me. Wenzel had five kills, and Ma. Wenzel had four kills.  Me. Wenzel and Ava Pearson each had a block.  Stieben had eight set assists.

Tri-Valley (0-16) will play at the Dak-12 Conference Tournament in Tea on Saturday, October 16th.

Mustangs Stay Close but Fall to Huskies

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team stayed close with the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Thursday, October 7th.  The Huskies, however, took the match in four sets from the Mustangs at Tri-Valley High School.

Elk Point-Jefferson won a close first set 25-22.  The Mustangs came back and won the second set by a score of 25-21.  The Huskies, again, by a 25-22 score in the third set.  Elk Point-Jefferson then took the fourth set 25-15 for the match win.

Ally Haga finished with 15 digs in the match.  Hannah West had 12.  Megan Wenzel had five aces, while Hannah West finished with two.  Erica Bicknase had a team-high 10 kills.  Maddie Wenzel had four kills.  Me. Wenzel finished with three blocks.  Brookelyn Stieben had 12 set assists, and Neveah Grann had eight set assists.

The Mustangs will travel to Baltic on Monday, October 11th and then host Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, October 12th.

Mustangs Drop Match at Chester

The Tri-Valley Mustangs traveled to Chester to play the Chester Area Flyers on Tuesday, October 5th.  The Flyers won the match in straight sets by scores of 25-10, 25-9, and 25-14.

Ava Pearson had three kills.  Megan Wenzel and Jenna Hanson both had two kills in the match.  Wenzel and Brookelyn Stieben each had an ace serve.  Wenzel also led the team with two blocks.  Stieben and Hanson both finished with five digs.  Hannah West and Lauren Grinde and three digs each.

The Mustangs (0-13) will host Elk Point-Jefferson on Thursday, October 7th.

Mustangs Fall to Wagner in Saturday Match

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleybal team hosted Wagner in a Saturday afternoon match on October 2nd.  Wagner won the first two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-18.  Tri-Valley got a set win 25-21, but Wagner won the fourth set 25-19 to win the match.

Erica Bicknase finished with a team-high 11 kills.  Lauren Grinde had nine kills and a block.  Jenna Hanson finished with 15 digs and an ace serve.  Hannah West added  14 digs.  Ally Haga had three ace serves.  Megan Wenzel led the team with three blocks.  Nevaeh Grann tallied 18 set assists, and Brookelyn Stieben had 16 assists.

Tri-Valley will travel to Chester on Tuesday, October 5th.

Mustangs Fall in Road Match at Salem

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team lost a road match at McCook Central/Montrose on Thursday, September 30th.  The Cougars defeated the Mustangs in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-9.

Erica Bicknase finished the match with six kills.   Madelyn Wenzel had three kills, and  Ava Pearson and Lauren Grinde both had two kills each.  Wenzel had two blocks to lead the team.   Nevaeh Grann  finished with eight  set assists, and Brookelyn Stieben had five assists.  Allyson Haga had 15 digs.

The Mustangs will host Wagner on Saturday, October 2nd.
