Gamecocks Fall to Platte in Late Innings

The Platte Killer Tomatoes scored four runs in the eighth inning to earn a 9-5 win over the Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks on Saturday, June 18th.  The game was played in Humboldt in the first Sunshine League / Cornbelt League amateur baseball showcase.

Both teams put four runs on the board in the third inning.  Platte scored their runs in the top of the inning, with the Gamecocks getting their four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Devon Garry had an RBI single in the inning.  Seth Cavanaugh brought home a run with a single, and Drew Maras had a two-run double to tie the game 4-4.

Platte took the lead again in the top of the fourth, but the Gamecocks tied the game again in the bottom of the sixth.  Luke Wodahl scored on an error to make it a 5-5 game.  The Killer Tomatoes broke the tie with four runs in the top of the eighth to take the win.

Maras had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.  Garry had two hits and an RBI.  Cam Quigley finished with two hits.  Cavanaugh had a single and RBI, and Wodahl finished with a hit.  Garry pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts.  Brandon McKnight pitched four innings and allowed three unearned runs on two hits and two walks.  Maras also pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed an unearned run on a walk with two strikeouts.

Gamecocks’ Five-Run Sixth Leads to Win over Flandreau

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks used a five-run sixth inning to lift them to an 8-1 win over the Flandreau Cardinals on Thursday, June 16th.

Cam Quigley brought home the first run in the top of the third with an RBI ground out for a 1-0 lead.  The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning.  The Gamecocks then scored five times.  Joe Hanisch had an RBI sacrifice fly.  Adam Hentges added an RBI single to make the score 3-0.  Noah Vettrus followed with a two-run single, and Zach Treiber had an RBI double to push the lead to 6-0.

Flandreau’s lone run in the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning on a balk.  The Gamecocks added two more runs in the top of the ninth on RBI hits by Devon Garry and Hanisch.

Hanisch had three hits, two of them doubles, and two RBIs.  Vettrus had two doubles and two RBIs.  Quigley and Treiber both had two hits each, which included a double, and one RBI.  Garry and Hentges both had a single and an RBI.  Broc Haldeman, Kyle Bailey, and Clayton Hanisch all had one single.  Cole Barthel pitched six innings and allowed no runs on six hits.  Landry Knight pitched three innings and allowed an earned run on three walks with one strikeout.

Lennox Snaps Gamecocks Winning Streak

Lennox scored three straight runs late in the game to snap a five-game winning streak by the Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks.  Lennox won 5-3 on Sunday, June 12th.

Broc Haldeman drove home two runs with a single in the the top of the first for the Gamecocks.  Lennox got a run in the bottom of the third and then tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth.  Haldeman drove home another run with a double in the top of the sixth, but Lennox tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning.  Lennox scored the two game-winning runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Haldeman had three hits, one a double, and all three RBIs.  Cam Quigley had three hits, one of them a double.  Adam Hentges finished with two hits.  Joe Hanisch and Seth Cavanaugh both had a single.  Zach Treiber pitched six innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks.  Micah Warrington pitched two innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk with a strikeout.

The Gamecocks game against Dell Rapids PBR on Thursday, June 9th was suspended in the top of the sixth inning due to rain.  The game will be resumed prior to their regularly scheduled game on July 10th.

Gamecocks Avenge Earlier Loss to Mudcats

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks avenged an earlier season loss against the Dell Rapids Mudcats on Tuesday, June 7th.  The Gamecooks held the lead from start to finish in a 5-2 home win.  The Mudcats had defeated the Gamecocks 7-2 on Thursday, May 19th.

This time the Gamecocks scored right away in the bottom of the first for an early lead.  Broc Haldeman had an RBI double for the early 1-0 advantage.  They added to the lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Joe Hanisch.

The Mudcats got a run in the top of the fifth to make it a 2-1 game, but the Gamecocks scored two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Hanisch drove home Drew Maras and Cam Quigley.  Devon Garry extended the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double. The Mudcats got one run in the top of the ninth.

Hanisch had a hit and three RBIs.  Garry and Haldeman both had a double and an RBI.  Maras finished with a double.  Quigley, Kyle Bailey, Brandon McKnight, and Chad Morrison all had hits as well.  Cole Barthel pitched five innings allowing one earned run on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts.  Maras pitched two innings allowing just one hit with one strikeout.  McKnight also pitched two innings and allowed an earned run on a hit and walk with two strikeouts.

Gamecocks Win Big over Flandreau

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks took over first place in the Cornbelt League after a 16-1 win over Flandreau on Sunday, June 5th.  The Gamecocks had an 11-run third inning in the five-inning game that ended on the 15-run rule.

Flandreau did score the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on two singles and a double.  Those were the only three hits the Cardinals got in the game.  The Gamecocks took the lead in the bottom of the first with RBIs by Broc Haldeman and Kyle Bailey.  Humboldt/Hartford had only four hits in their 11-run third inning, capped by a grand slam by Bailey.  The Gamecocks added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

Bailey had two hits, including the grand slam, and five RBIs.  Haldeman had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs.  Devon Garry also had two hits, including a double.  Noah Vettrus and Adam Hentges both had a single and two RBIs.  Joe Hanisch and Cam Quigley both had a hit and an RBI.

Zach Treiber pitched all five innings allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Gamecocks Score Three Late Runs to Tie Game, Then Walks-off Salem

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks scored one run in the eighth and two more in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game 11-11 against the Salem Cubs and send the game into extra innings.  The Gamecocks then got a run in the bottom of the eleventh for the walk-off win on Thursday, June 2nd.  Both teams battled back-and-forth all game long.

Salem scored three runs in the top of the first only to see the Gamecocks scored three in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch and two-run single by Brandon McKnight.  The Cubs took the lead again in the top of the second inning.  Humboldt/Hartford tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Kyle Bailey.

Both teams traded runs in the fourth inning.  Salem took a 6-5 lead after scoring another run in the top of the fifth.  The Gamecocks took their first lead of the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Cam Quigley tied the game with a lead-off solo home run.  Broc Haldeman had an RBI single, and McKnight had an RBI ground out to give the Gamecocks an 8-6 lead.

The Cubs regained the lead in the top of the sixth with three more runs.  They extended their lead to 11-8 with two runs in the top of the seventh.  Noah Vettrus drove home a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Chad Morrison had an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, and Bailey brought home the tying run with a single.  The game remained tied until the bottom of the eleventh.

Landry Knight got on base with a one-out single.  Quigley drew a walk, and then Morrison was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out.  Knight then scored on a wild pitch to give the Gamecocks the win.

Quigley had three hits, including a double and home run, with an RBI.  Bailey had three hits and two RBIs.  Morrison had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Haldeman and Cooper Maras both had two hits and an RBI.  McKnight had one hit and three RBIs.  Vettrus had a hit and an RBI.  Seth Cavanaugh, Adam Hentges, and Knight each had a hit.

Devon Garry pitched four innings allowing five runs, one earned, on three hits and six walks with six strikeouts.  Micah Warrington pitched two innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Knight earned the win pitching five innings allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out 12 batters.

Gamecocks Take Win over Wood Ducks

In the first of two battles between the Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks and Wood Ducks, the Gamecocks took the win, 12-4, on Thursday, May 26th.

The Gamecocks scored 12 unanswered runs in the first four innings.  They got five runs in the first, two in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth for a 12-0 lead.  The Wood Ducks got all four of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Noah Vettrus had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs for the Gamecocks.  Kyle Bailey had three hits and two RBIs.  Devon Garry had three hits, including a triple, and an RBI.  Brandon McKnight had two hits and an RBI.  Clayton Hanisch had a double.  Cam Quigley, Joe Hanisch, and Cooper Maras all had singles.  Broc. Haldeman had two RBIs.  Cole Barthel pitched the first four innings without giving up a hit and striking out two.  Micah Warrington pitched five innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Austin King had a double and two RBIs for the Wood Ducks.  JJ Jesson had a single and two RBIs.  Logan Larsen had a single.  Eric Heidebrink pitched two innings and allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and three walks with a strikeout.  Logan Colwill pitched an inning allowing four runs, two earned, on four walks.  Jake Ellens pitched six innings allowing an earned run on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Gamecocks Score Come-from-Behind Walk-off Win over Canova

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks scored five unanswered runs after trailing 5-1 to earn a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Canova Gang at Humboldt on Sunday, May 22nd.  Seth Cavanaugh completed the comeback with a walk-off RBI single to right field in the bottom of the ninth.

Canova took an early 4-0 lead after scoring a run in the top of the first inning and three more in the top of the third.  Cam Quigley drove home the first run for the Gamecocks with an RBI single in the bottom of the third.  The score remained 4-1 until the sixth inning.  Kendall Gassman hit a home run in the top of the inning to extend Canova’s lead to 5-1.

The Gamecocks then rallied in the bottom of the sixth.  Drew Maras took a lead-off walk.  Chad Morrison added a one-out single, and then Joe Hanisch hit a three-run home run to pull Humboldt/Hartford within a run, 5-4.  Kyle Bailey tied the game with an RBI single later in the inning.  The two teams were locked at 5-5 until the bottom of the ninth.  Noah Vettrus started the inning with a walk.  Zach Treiber laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Vettrus to second.  Cavanaugh then sent a 2-2 pitch to right field for the game-winning hit.

Hanisch had two hits, a double and home run, and three RBIs.  Cavanaugh had two hits and an RBI.  Quigley and Bailey both had a single and an RBI.  Chad Morrison, Broc Haldeman, Brandon McKnight, and Adam Hentges all had singles in the game.  Treiber pitched three innings allowing four earned runs on three hits with six walks and two strikeouts.  McKnight pitched three innings and allowed an earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.  Vettrus pitched the final three innings allowing three hits anda  walk with two strikeouts.

Gamecocks Fall to Mudcats in Cornbelt Action

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks (3-2, 1-1) lost a road game to the Dell Rapids Mudcats 7-2 on Thursday, May 19th at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

The Gamecocks struck first when Joe Hanisch singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.  The Mudcats took the lead in the bottom of the inning with two runs.  The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth inning.  Broc Haldeman singled to center field driving home Devon Garry to tie the game 2-2.  Dell Rapids, however, score three times in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the seventh for the 7-2 win.

Garry, Hanisch, and Brandon McKnight all had doubles in the game.  Haldeman had two singles and an RBI.  Garry pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Seth Cavanaugh pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed a hit and a walk.  Drew Maras threw two innings allowing two runs, neither earned, on three hits and logged four strikeouts.  Haldaman pitched one inning and gave up one hit.

Gamecocks and Wood Ducks Play in Series of Games

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks and Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks amateur baseball teams played three games each Friday, May 13th through Sunday, May 15th.

The Gamecocks finished the weekend going 2-1 in their three games.  In their game on May 13th, the Gamecocks defeated the Renner Rangers.  The Gamecocks had a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning and went on to defeated Renner 12-2.  On Saturday the Gamecocks hosted the Garretson Blue Jays with the Blue Jays getting the 6-3 win.  The weekend finished with the start of the Cornbelt League season.  The Gamecocks hosted the Madison Broncos and kicked of the league season with an 11-4 victory.

The Wood Ducks finished their weekend 0-3 in their three games.  On Friday the Wood Ducks hosted the LCW (Lennox-Chancellor-Worthing) Dirt Devils.  The Dirt Devils took the win 5-1 in that game.  Saturday’s game for the Wood Ducks was against the Winner/Colome Pheasants.  The Pheasants took a 14-1 win over the Wood Ducks.  The final game of the weekend was also the start of the Cornbelt League season.  The Wood Ducks fell to Dell Rapids PBR 5-2.

Both teams are back in action on Thursday, May 19th in Cornbelt League play.  The Wood Ducks will host the Colman A’s while the Gamecocks travel to Dell Rapids to play the Mudcats.
