Cardinals Cruise to Straight-Set Win

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals had no trouble earning a win at Flandreau Indian School on Tuesday, September 17th.  The Cardinals, who have not played a home match in two weeks, won by scores of 25-2, 25-14, 25-8.

Courtney Brown led the offensive attacks with 13 kills.  Ella Griffin had five, and Tyra Harrington had three kills.  Ella Heinitz finished with 12 set assists and two ace serves.  Griffin also had eight set assists, two digs, and three ace serves.  Macie Brown had a team-high five digs, and C. Brown had four digs.  Paige Bunkers led the team with eight ace serves.

The Cardinals (6-3) finally return home on Thursday, September 19th when they host the Estelline/Hendricks Redhawks.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinals Fall Short in Five-Set Thriller

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team hit the road on Monday, September 9th to play the Ellsworth, MN Panthers.  The Panthers took the five-set thriller over the Cardinals.

St Mary won the first set by a score of 25-18.  The Panthers took extended second set at 27-25.  The Cardinals rebounded and won the third set 25-18.  However, Ellsworth, won the fourth set 25-23 to force the fifth and deciding set, and the Panthers came away victorious by a score of 15-13.

Courtney Brown finished with 13 kills and 10 digs in the match.  Ella Heinitz notched 10 kills, 12 set assists, 12 digs, and five blocks.  Ella Griffin added 18 set assists, seven digs, six blocks, and three kills.  Maya Heinitz led the team with 19 digs and also had five ace serves.  Paige Bunkers had nine ace serves.  Macie Brown had 15 digs and three ace serves.  Tyra Harrington added four kills and three blocks.

The Cardinals (5-3) will continue to play on the road on Thursday, September 12th.  St Mary will travel to Canistota to play the Hawks.

Cardinals Win Third Straight Match to Start Season

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals continued their winning streak to start the 2019 season with a straight-set win over Mitchell Christian on Thursday, September 5th in Mitchell.

The Cardinals won by set scores of 25-21, 25-9, 25-11.

Macie Brown led the team with six kills on the night.  Courtney Brown had five kills, and Ella Heinitz had two kills.  Heinitz finished with 11 set assists, while Ella Griffin had seven assists.  Heinitz also led the team with five digs and eight ace serves.  C. Brown finished with three digs, and Maya Heinitz had two digs and six ace serves.  Tyra Harrington added seven ace serves on the night.

St Mary (3-0) will play in the Estelline Tournament on Saturday, September 7th.

St Mary Wins Thrilling Match over De Smet

They may have won in straight sets, but the match win for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals was thrilling as they defeated the De Smet Bulldogs 28-26, 25-21, 25-20 on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Playing in their second straight home match to start the season, the Cardinals found themselves trailing 10-6 early in the first set.  The Bulldogs extended the lead to 15-8 before the Cardinals made their move.  St Mary went on a 10-3 run to tie the match at 18-18.  The Cardinals took the lead at 22-20, but De Smet tied the set at 22-22.  St Mary was at set point at 24-22, but the Bulldogs reeled off three straight points for a 25-24 lead.  St Mary regained the lead at 26-25 with De Smet again tying at 26-26.  The Cardinals took the final two points for the set win.

The second set was tied 6-6 early and then again at 11-11, but the Bulldogs went on a 6-1 run for a 17-12 lead.  St Mary countered with the biggest run of the night.  The Cardinals scored 10 straight points for a 22-17 lead.  St Mary wouldn’t let De Smet get any closer than two points at 23-21 before getting the win 25-21.

Momentum seemed to favor the Cardinals in the third set as they jumped out to an 11-3 lead.  The lead grew to 10 points at 14-4.  St Mary was able to maintain an eight-to-ten point lead over the next few points and led 17-8.  De Smet tried to mount a comeback and cut the lead down to 18-15.  That was as close as they would get as the Cardinals closed out the set for the match win.

Ella Heinitz finished with 14 set assists, six kills, six blocks, and six digs in the match.  Tyra Harrington had six kills, three blocks, and two digs.  Courtney Brown had four kills and seven digs.  Ella Griffin added nine set assists, seven blocks, five digs, two kills, and two ace serves.  Paige Bunkers had six ace serves.  Maya Heinitz led the team with 16 digs, and Macie Brown added five digs.

St Mary (2-0) will play a varsity only match in Mitchell against Mitchell Christian on Thursday, September 5th.

Cardinal Volleyball Wins Season Opener

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team opened up their 2019 season with a five-set match win over the Alcester-Hudson Cubs at home on Thursday, August 29th.

The Cubs opened the match with a 25-13 win, but the Cardinals came back strong to win the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-17.  Alcester-Hudson won the fourth set by a score of 25-20 to force a fifth and final set.  St Mary won the set 15-8 to win the match.

Ella Heinitz finished the night with eight kills for the Cardinals.  Paige Bunkers and four ace serves, and Maya Heinitz tallied 10 digs on the night.

St Mary will be at home again on Tuesday, September 3rd.  The Cardinals will host the De Smet Bulldogs, and the match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Season Ends for Cardinal Volleyball Team

DRSMvsEthan_VB_10-30-18The 2018 season came to an end for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team in the second round of the Region 4B tournament on Tuesday, October 30th.  After an opening-round win over Howard on Monday, the Cardinals faced the #2 seeded Ethan Rustlers at Madison High School.  The Rustlers won in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-8, 25-15.

The early part of the first set went back and forth with both teams tied at 4-4.  Ethan then went on a big run of 15-4 for a 19-8 lead.  The Rustlers closed out the set by outscoring St Mary 6-5 to take the first set.  The Rustlers carried the momentum into the second set and got a big lead early that carried them to the win.  The Cardinals were able to get to a 5-4 lead to start the third set, but again Ethan went on a run of 11-6 to take a 15-10 lead.  The Rustlers closed out the match on a 10-5 run for the win.

Veronica Beck led the team with seven kills.  Maddie Schwebach and Cassie Mullaney both had three kills.  Ella Heinitz finished with 18 set assists.  Carly Maxwell and Macie Brown both had five digs in the match.

The Cardinals finished their 2018 season with an overall record of 10-17.

St Mary Volleyball Advances in Region 4B

DRSMvsHow_VB_10-29-18The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals advanced to the second round of the 2018 Region 4B Tournament after an opening round win over the Howard Tigers.  The Cardinals defeated the Tigers in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School.

The #7 seeded Cardinals got off to a quick start in the first set.  St Mary got out to an 8-3 lead on Howard, and led 12-6 as the two teams neared the midway mark of the first set.  Howard rallied and took a 17-15 lead.  The Tigers extended the lead to 20-17, but the Cardinals found their own rally late in the set to tie Howard at 22-22.  St Mary was able to finish off the set with three straight points to take the early advantage in the match.

Howard took the early advantage in the second set and held an early 5-3 lead.  After the two teams were tied at 8-8, the Cardinals went on a 10-5 run to take control of the set at 18-13.  St Mary closed out the set on a 7-4 run for their second set win.  The Tigers again got out to a fast start in the third set scoring the first five points for a 5-0 lead.  The Cardinals regroups and went on a 7-2 run to tie the set at 7-7.  The two teams were tied at 8-8 and 9-9.  That’s when St Mary found more momentum and outscored Howard 9-2 for an 18-11.  The Cardinals controlled the rest of the set for the match win.

Cassie Mullaney finished with eight kills.  Maddie Schwebach added seven kills, Tyra Harrington had five kills, and Veronica Beck had four kills.  Ella Heinitz tallied 18 set assists and four digs.  Carly Maxwell finished with 13 digs.  V. Beck added five digs and four ace serves.  Olivia Beck, Macie Brown and Courtney Brown all had four digs each.  Schwebach also had three solo blocks.

St Mary (10-16) advances to the second round and will play the #2 seeded Ethan Rustlers on Tuesday, October 30th.  The match is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at Madison High School.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinals Fall to Hawks in Straight Sets on Senior Night

DRSMvsCE_VB_10-22-18In their final home and regular season match of the 2018 season, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell to the Colman-Egan Hawks on senior night at Dell Rapids St Mary High School on Monday, October 22nd.  The Hawks won by set scores of 25-20, 25-12, 25-18.

The first set of the match was back and forth throughout much of the set.  There were nine ties and seven lead changes in the first half of the set before Colman-Egan was able to break away for a 20-14 lead.  The Cardinals got back within a point at 21-20, but the Hawks closed out the set with four straight points for the win.

St Mary got behind early at 8-3.  The Cardinals closed the lead to three points at 8-5, but Colman-Egan found momentum and went on a 10-3 run to go ahead 18-8.  The Hawks were able to take the second set at 25-12.

The Cardinals jumped out early on Colman-Egan 3-0 in the third set.  The Hawks answered with a three-point run of their own to tie the set at 3-3.  St Mary then went ahead 5-3 only to see Colman-Egan again tie the set at 5-5.  Again the Hawks got on a run.  This time it was a 9-1 run to go ahead 14-6.  St Mary couldn’t get the momentum to get the come-from-behind win and lost the set 25-18.

Veronica Beck finished the night with eight kills.  Maddie Schwebach had four kills, and Cassie Mullaney had three kills.  Macie Brown had 11 digs on the defensive side for St Mary.  Carly Maxwell finished with 10 digs.  Paige Bunkers had six digs along with two ace serves.  Beck also had two ace serves. Ella Heinitz had 12 set assists.  Mullaney, Schwebach, and Heinitz all had a block in the match.

Mackenzie Hemmer finished with nine kills for Colman-Egan.  Braiden Westley had eight kills, and Olivia Baumberger had four kills.  Westley also had five blocks, and Baumberger had three blocks.  Elizabenth Moore had seven digs and seven ace serves.  Westley had a team-high eight digs.

This year’s Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal seniors are Carly Maxwell, Cassie Mullaney, Veronia Beck, and Maddie Schwebach.

St Mary ends the regular season with a 9-16 record.  The Cardinals will now play in the opening round of the Region 4B tournament starting on Monday, October 29th.  Their opponent and location of the match are yet to be determined.  Big Sioux Media will follow the Cardinals throughout the Region 4B tournament.

Cardinals Beat Lake Preston in Second Straight Match

DRSM LogoPlaying the Lake Preston Divers for the second match in a row, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals earned their second win over the Divers on Tuesday, October 16th in Lake Preston.  St Mary and Lake Preston met at the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday, October 13th with the Cardinals getting a 2-0 win.  St Mary followed that match win with a straight set win on Monday by scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-15.

Veronica Beck finished with 10 kills and four ace serves for the Cardinals.  Maddie Schwebach had eight kills, and Cassie Mullaney had five kills.  Ella Heinitz tallied 20 set assists, nine digs, and two ace serves.  Paige Bunkers finished with four set assists and an ace.  Macie Brown had a team-high 13 digs, and Carly Maxwell finished with 12 digs.

St Mary (9-15) will host Colman-Egan on Monday, October 22nd.  It will be the final regular season match and senior night for the Cardinals.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinals Rally Falls Short Against Castlewood

DRSMvsCastlewood_VB_10-11-18A late rally by the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals fell short against the Castlewood Warriors on Thursday, October 11th.  Trailing two sets to none, St Mary rallied to win the third set and came storming back after being down five points late in the fourth set, but the rally fell short as Castlewood won the match 3-1.  The set scores were 25-21, 25-12, 23-25, 25-23.

St Mary held a slim lead through much of the first half of the first set.  They were able to keep ahead of Castlewood by one to two points.  The Warriors, however, were finally able to tie the set at 15-15.  Castlewood then went on a 10-6 run to close out the first set for the victory.  The Warriors were able to carry that momentum into the second set jumping out to a 9-1 lead.  They kept rolling through the second set for the 25-12 win.

Castlewood looked to keep the momentum going into the third set as they got out to a 13-7 lead halfway through the set.  The Cardinals were able to chip away at the lead to pull within a point at 15-14.  St Mary was able to tie the set at 18-18.  Castlewood was able to retake the lead at 22-20, but St Mary closed out the set on a 5-1 run to force a fourth set.  The Warriors again got out to a sizeable lead at 16-8 in the fourth set.  St Mary once again made a run and tied the game at 20-20.  The Cardinals also had to tie the set at 22-22 and 23-23, but Castlewood scored the final two points to take the match.

Veronica Beck tallied 10 kills in the match.  Maddie Schwebach had nine kills, and Cassie Mullaney added five kills.  Ella Heinitz had 20 set assists.  Carly Maxwell finished with 26 digs.  Macie Brown finished with 16 digs, and Courtney Brown had nine digs.  Mullaney had three blocks, and Heinitz had two blocks.  Paige Bunkers led the team with two ace serves.

St Mary (7-12) will travel to Castlewood for the Dakota Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday, October 13th.
