The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team placed six wrestlers at the Tri-Valley tournament on Saturday, January 16th.  Isaac Land, Ben Cavigielli, and Lathon Gorospe all finished second in their weight class.

The Quarriers finished with 99.0 team points and placed 11th out of 15 teams.  Lennox placed first with 197.0 team points.  Flandreau finished second with 143.5 points, and Tri-Valley was third with 141.0 points.

Dell Rapids will travel to Dakota Valley for their fourth Dak-12 meet on Tuesday, January 19th.

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team lost two duals in a Dak12 meet on Thursday, January 14th, in Vermillion.  Dell Rapids lost to Madison 60-18 and also fell to Vermillion 46-30.

Head coach Craig Jorgensen said, “We are going to struggle winning duals because we give up so many points in forfeits. We try and focus on what we can control, which is individual matches. I was happy with our wrestlers efforts. We really worked hard on the mat. I was very impressed with the effort in the Vermillion dual. We scored 30 points and won six of the nine matches wrestled.  Wrestler of the night was James Lueders who pulled off a big win over Noah Walker 6-1.”

The Dell Rapids Quarriers placed two wrestlers at the Dan Pansch/Jesse James Invitational held in Brandon on Saturday, January 9th.

Ben Cavigielli finished 2-3 for the tournament in the 195-pound class and placed 6th.  Lathon Gorospe finished the day 4-2 in the 220-pound class and placed 4th.

Head coach Craig Jorgensen said, “Lathon and Ben wrestled well in one of the toughest tournaments we will have on our schedule.  Lathon had big wins over Payton Smith of Canton, Marshal Simons of Huron and Kreg Kepplinger of Bon Homme.  Lathon is wrestling aggressive and has really worked on cutting down on mistakes on the mat.  Lathon has started the year out great and will continue to improve.  Ben put together a great tournament.  He defeated Patric Sproles from O’Gorman by fall.  Sproles beat Ben earlier this year.  He also defeated Hunter Shamatt from Brandon.  He is starting to open it up and it’s paying off.  Our other wrestlers had a good day but didn’t place.  We had a couple tight matches that could have went either way.  We have to get more aggressive in those matches for them to come out in our favor.”

The Quarriers will participate in the their third Dak-12 meet of the year on Thursday, January 14th, in Vermillion and then will wrestle at the Tri-Valley Tournament on Saturday, January 16th.

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team placed five wrestlers at the Madison Tournament on Saturday, December 19th.  The team finished 9th out of 14 teams with a total of 70.0 points.  Spearfish won the team event with 211.5 points.  Madison was second with 179.5 points, and Brookings was third with 153.0 points.

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team hosted the “Top of the Rock” tournament on Saturday, December 5th, at Dell Rapids High School.  Dell Rapids finished sixth with a team score of 72.5.  Adrian placed first with a score of 229.5.  Beresford was second with 198.0 points, and McCook Central/Montrose was third with 150.0 points.

Two Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestlers will be participating in the 2015 State A Wrestling tournament on Thursday, February 27th, and Friday, February 28th, in Sioux Falls.  Austin Eulberg and Ben Cavigielli earned their way to the state competition by placing in the Region 3A tournament on Saturday, February 21st.

Eulberg placed third in the 160-pound weight class.  He won his first match by pinning Justin Brockel of Sisseton.  Eulberg was then pinned by Jake Anderson of West Central, but earned his way back with a pin of Cole Eidem of Brookings.  Eulberg then placed third by pinning Dylan Mitzel of Watertown to qualify for state.

Cavigielli placed third in the 182-pound weight class.  Cavigielli pinned Patric Sproles of Sioux Falls O’Gorman in his first match.  Cavigielli was then pinned by Wyatt Resmen of Brookings.  Cavigielli then won a 5-3 decision over Jared Mettler of West Central before placing third with a 5-2 decision over Sean Muilenburg of Sioux Falls Roosevelt to advance to state.

Sioux Falls Roosevelt won the Region 1A team title with 240.5 points.  Brookings was second with 168.0 points, and West Central finished third with 159.0 points.  Dell Rapids finished 8th as a team with 38.0 points.

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestling team dropped two Dak-12 matches on Tuesday, January 27th, at West Central High School.  The Quarriers lost to Tri-Valley 54-24.  West Central also defeated Dell Rapids 64-12.  The Quarriers will participate in the Brookings Tournament on Saturday, January 31st.

The Dell Rapids Quarrier wrestlers went 1-1 in a quadrangular in Madison on Tuesday, January 20th.  Dell Rapids defeated Dakota Valley 48-24.  The Quarriers fell to Elk Point-Jefferson 60-24.  Undefeated wrestlers on the night were James Lueders, Austin Eulberg, Reice Tiernan and Nick Palmer.
