Quarrier Girls Suffer Opening Round Loss

DRvsLen_GBB_3-9-17_1The Dell Rapids Quarriers had to climb out of a double-digit first quarter deficit, only to see the Lennox Orioles pull away in the final minutes for a 63-58 win in the opening round of the 2017 Girls State A Tournament in Brookings over the Quarriers.  The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak.  Lennox was also the last team to beat Dell Rapids.

Lennox had an 8-6 lead early in the first quarter, and then went on 12-2 run for a 20-8 lead late in the first quarter.  The Quarriers were able to cut the lead to 10 points at 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.  The Dell Rapids defense then held Lennox to just 10 second quarter points, while the offense found a little groove.  Dell Rapids was able to cut the to 33-29 by halftime.  The Quarriers brought the defensive intensity into the third quarter and was able to take a three point lead with 1:44 to go in the third quarter, but the third quarter ended with the score tied at 44-44.  With 4:31 to go in the game, Emma Paul put the Quarriers ahead 52-50 on a two-point bucket, but Lennox when on an 8-0 run and led 58-52 late in the game.  Paul knocked down a three point DRvsLen_GBB_3-9-17_2shot with just under a minute to play to cut the lead to 58-55.  After three made Oriole free throws over the next :30, Ravyn Hoffman then made a three-point shot with :35 to go to make it 61-58.  Lennox closed out the game with two more free throws for the win.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 41% (21-51) from the field, 42% (8-19) from three-point area, but just 47% (8-17) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 35 team rebounds, 14 assists, and 13 turnovers.  Lennox finished the game shooting 39% (18-46) from the field, 42% (8-19) from three-point line, and an impressive 83% (19-23) from the free-throw line.  Lennox also had 31 team rebounds, just six assists, and eight steals.

DRvsLen_GBB_3-9-17_4Jayda Knuppe finished the game with 19 points for Dell Rapids along with seven rebounds.  Emma Paul had 17 points and four rebounds.  Kaylee Hennen had five points.  Averi Pankonen added four points.  Kali Graham, Arial Hoffman, R. Hoffman, and Sydney Stofferahn all had three points each.  Aspen Hansen had one point, bug five rebounds and three assists.

Dell Rapids (18-5) will play Hamlin at 1:45 p.m. on Friday.

Quarrier Girls Earn 3rd Straight Trip to State

2017DRGirlsSweet16ChampThe Dell Rapids Quarriers earned their third straight trip to the State A Tournament after beating the Todd County Falcons 59-49 in the Sweet 16 round in Chamberlain on Friday, March 3rd.  The win was also the 14th win in a row for the Quarriers.

Dell Rapids opened the game on a 7-0 run in the first 2:30.  Todd County countered with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take an 8-7 lead with about 3:30 to play in the quarter.  The teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter, and the Falcons led 15-14 after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids started the second quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 20-17 lead, and slowly pulled added to the lead until it was 30-21 at halftime.

The Falcons were able to chip away at the Quarrier lead in the third quarter and held Dell Rapids to just eight third quarter points.  Todd County and Dell Rapids headed to the fourth quarter tied at 38-38.  Dell Rapids scored the first three points of the fourth quarter, but the Falcons answered with a two-point basked with 7:00 to go to make the score 41-40.  Dell Rapids scored the next six points and pushed the lead to 47-40 with 5:45 remaining in the game.  Dell Rapids maintained a seven-to-nine point lead until the Falcons pulled within five points at 52-47 with 1:52 to go.  The Quarriers ended the game on a 7-2 run for the win.

Kali Graham, who was held scoreless in the first quarter, led Dell Rapids with 19 points.  Jayda Knuppe added 18 points.  Averi Pankonen had eight points, Emma Paul finished with seven points, Kaylee Hennen had three points, and Sydney Stofferahn had two points.  Dell Rapids finished 20-33 from the free-throw line in the game.

The Quarriers (14-4) will ride their 14-game win streak into the 2017 State A Tournament in Brookings on March 9th through 11th.  Dell Rapids will play Dak-12 foe Lennox in the opening round on Thursday at around 7:45 p.m.  Lennox was the last team to beat the Quarriers, which was a 63-60 overtime loss on January 9th in Lennox.

Quarrier Girls Advance to Sweet 16

DRvsSFC_GBB_2-25-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers advanced to the “Sweet 16” round of the Class A post season with a 59-51 win over the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers in the semi-final round of the Region 3A tournament on Saturday, February 25th, in Hartford.  The win was also the 13th win in a row for Dell Rapids as they are now just one win away from their third straight state tournament appearance.

The Quarriers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first minute and a half of the game.  Sioux Falls Christian answered with a 6-0 in the next minute and a half to take a 6-5 lead with 5:00 to go in the first quarter.  The teams traded points the remainder of the quarter, and the game was tied at 12-12 after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids opened up the first half of the second quarter on an 8-2 run and took a 20-14 lead with 4:00 to play in the first half.  With the score at 20-17 with 1:30 to go in the second quarter, the Quarriers finished the half on a 7-3 run to take a 27-20 lead into halftime.

The Chargers were able to make up five points of the lead in the first half of the third quarter.  Sioux Falls Christian cut the lead to 35-33 with 4:00 to play in the third quarter.  Again the two teams traded points the remainder of the third quarter, and Dell Rapids held a 42-40 lead after the third quarter.  The Quarriers went on a 9-2 run in the first couple of minutes of the fourth quarter to push their lead to 51-42 with 5:29 to play.  The Chargers were able to get within four points at 55-51 with :41 to play, but the Quarriers would hang on for the win to advance to the next round.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Arial Hoffman led the team with 19 points and five rebounds.  Aspen Hansen had 14 points.  Emma Paul finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.  Kali Graham had eight points and four rebounds.

Dell Rapids (17-4) will be the #8 seed in the Sweet 16 and play #9 Todd County on Friday, March 3rd.  The location has yet to be determined.  Big Sioux Media will broadcast the game.

In the other Region 3A semi-final game, the Madison Bulldogs defeated the Flandreau Fliers 63-51 to also advance to the Sweet 16 round.  Jessi Giles had 21 points and Olivia Rud had 16 points to lead the Bulldogs.  Flandreau was led by Hannah Parsley with 18 points, Kathy Parsley with 12 points, and Kylie Bertram with 11 points.

Quarrier Girls Make it a Sweet Dozen

DRvsMad_GBB_2-16-17Trailing 42-36 heading into the fourth quarter, the Dell Rapids Quarriers outscored the Madison Bulldogs 25-12 in the final quarter to earn a 61-54 victory.  The win was their 12th win in a row and 10th win in Dak-12 Conference play.

Dell Rapids led 13-12 after a back-and-fourth first quarter, but Madison pulled ahead in the second quarter and took a 27-23 lead into halftime.  The Bulldogs were able to maintain a six-to-eight point lead throughout much of the third quarter and led 42-36 at the end of the quarter.  The Quarriers opened the fourth quarter on a 13-2 run and never relinquished the lead after that point.  The Bulldogs were never able to get any closer than three points the remainder of the game.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 35% (21-60) from the field, 29% (4-14) from three-point area, and 75% (15-20) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids had 32 team rebounds, 10 team assists, and forced 17 Bulldog turnovers.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Emma Paul had a team-high 18 points along with five rebounds.  Jayda Knuppe had 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists.  Arial Hoffman had 11 points, six rebounds, and two assists.  Averi Pankonen finished with five points in the game.  Madison was led by Jessi Giles with 20 points and Olivia Rud with 18 points.

Dell Rapids finishes the regular season with a 16-4 overall record and a 10-1 Dak-12 Conference record.  The Quarriers will be the #1 seed in the Region 3A Tournament and will receive a first round bye.  Dell Rapids will play the winner #5 Baltic and #4 Sioux Falls Christian on Thursday, February 23rd, at Tea Area High School.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Streak Reaches Eleven for Quarrier Girls

DRvsCanton_GBB_2-13-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers continued their hot streak as they cruised to a 55-22 win over the Canton C-Hawks on Monday, February 13th, at Dell Rapids High School.  The win was the eleventh in a row for Dell Rapids and their 13th out of their last 14 games.  The Quarriers are now tied with the Lennox Orioles for the best regular season Dak-12 conference record at 9-1.  Each team has one more conference game remaining to decide the regular season conference champion.

Dell Rapids was in complete control of the game from the start as they got out to a 7-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game.  Dell Rapids went on to have a 14-4 lead after the first quarter.  The Quarriers continued their solid defense in the first half has they held Canton to just two points in the second quarter, and the Quarriers led 28-6 at halftime.  Dell Rapids then went on to outscore Canton 27-16 in the second half for the win.

Nine players recorded points in the game for Dell Rapids.  Jayda Knuppe led the team with 11 points.  Arial Hoffman finished with nine points.  Kayle Hennen and Emma Paul both had eight points.  Sydney Stofferahn ahd six points, Kali Graham had four points, and Tiffanie Dorale, Aspen Hansen, and Averi Pankonen all finished with three points each.

The Quarriers (15-4) will close out their four-game home stand as well as their 2016-2017 regular season when they host the Madison Bulldogs on Thursday, February 16th.  The game will be broadcast on Big Sioux Media.

Ten in a Row for the Quarrier Girls

DRvsDV_GBB_2-10-17The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls won their 10th game in a row after a 72-60 win over the Dakota Valley Panthers on Friday, February 10th, in Dell Rapids.  Not only have the Quarriers won for the 10th time in a row, they have won 12 of their last 13 games and continue to hold the top spot in Region 3A.

Both offenses were rolling in the first quarter.  Dell Rapids was able to get a 17-14 lead after the first quarter.  The Quarriers pushed that lead to seven by halftime at 32-25.  Both teams scored 19 points each in the third quarter, and Dell Rapids maintained their seven-point lead at 51-44 after the third quarter.  The Quarriers were able to pull away down the stretch in the fourth quarter for the win.

Ten different players scored in the game for Dell Rapids.  Jayda Knuppe finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.  Arial Hoffman added 15 points and five rebounds.  Emma Paul had nine points and 10 rebounds, while Kaylee Hennen had eight points.

Dell Rapids (14-4) will continue their home stand on Monday, February 13th, when they host the Canton C-Hawks as part of a girls and boys double-header.  Monday will also be Senior Night, and the seniors for both the girls and boys will be recognized between the girls and boys games.  Both games will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Run Streak to Nine Games

DRHSvsMVP_GBB_2-7-17The Dell Rapids Quarriers ran their winning streak to nine in a row with a 59-35 win over the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans at home on Tuesday, February 7th.  The game marked the first of four straight home games to end the regular season for Dell Rapids.

The Quarriers defense held the Titans to just four points in the first quarter as Dell Rapids led 13-4 at the first break.  Dell Rapids was able to push the lead to 37-15 by halftime.  Both teams scored 12 points each in the third quarter as Dell Rapids maintained their 22-point lead at 49-27.  Dell Rapids outscored the Titans 10-8 in the final quarter for the win.

Two players finished the game in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Both Jayda Knuppe and Arial Hoffman ended the game with 15 points each.  Averi Pankonen tallied eight points, and Kali Graham and Emma Paul both had six points each.  Knuppe led the team with eight rebounds.  Graham, Paul, and Kaylee Hennen all had five rebounds.

Dell Rapids (13-4) hosts the Dakota Valley Panthers as part of a girls and boys double-header on Friday, February 10th.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Girls Win Streak Reaches Eight

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers continue to be one of the hottest teams in Class A as they won their eighth game in row.  The Quarriers rallied in the second half for a 51-40 win over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Friday, February 3rd, at Tri-Valley High School.

Tri-Valley held a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter at 12-9.  Dell Rapids was able to grab the lead at halftime at 18-17.  It was a 22-point third quarter that helped the Quarriers extend their lead to 40-25 by the end of the third quarter and give them their tenth win in eleven games.

Emma Paul led all scorers in the game with 18 points.

Dell Rapids (12-4) will close out the regular season with four straight home games.  The Quarriers will play the Mt Vernon/Plankinton Titans on Tuesday, February 7th, as part of a double-header with the boys.  The games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Hot Streak Continues for Quarrier Girls

DRvsWC_GBB_1-28-17The hot streak continued for the Dell Rapids Quarriers as they defeated the West Central Trojans 53-45 at the Dak-12 Conference Classic on Saturday, January 28th, at Dell Rapids High School.  The win was the seventh in a row for the Quarriers and nine of their last 10 games.

Dell Rapids held a slim 10-9 lead after the first quarter, but Quarriers had a great second quarter scoring 20 points and holding the Trojans to 10 points to take a 30-19 lead at halftime.  The halftime adjustments by West Central worked well in the third quarter as they held the Quarriers to just six points.  West Central was able to get within three points at 36-33 by the end of the third quarter.  The Quarriers, however, were able to make the adjustment in the fourth quarter and outscored the Trojans 17-12 to pull away for the eight-point win.

Dell Rapids was led by Aspen Hansen with 16 points, three rebounds and two steals.  Emma Paul finished with 11 points and three rebounds.  Jayda Knuppe added nine points.  Averi Pankonen and Arial Hoffman both had six points each.  West Central was led by Ashlyn Macdonald with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Dell Rapids (11-4) will travel to Tri-Valley on Friday, February 3rd.  Big Sioux Media will have a link to a webcast.

Quarrier Girls Hold Off Vermillion for Sixth Straight Win

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers held off a furious rally late in the game by the Vermillion Tanagers to win their sixth straight game and eighth out of their last nine on Thursday, January 26th, in Vermillion.

Both offenses were streaky through the first three quarters of the game.  The Tanagers raced out to a 7-1 lead early in the game, but Dell Rapids answered with a 9-0 run to close out the first quarter for a 10-7 lead.  Vermillion started the second quarter with another run.  The Tanagers went on a 7-2 run to take a 14-12 lead, but once again the Quarriers answered.  Dell Rapids finished the half on a 12-2 run to lead 24-16 at halftime.

Vermillion again started the third quarter with a little run to pull within three points at 26-29.  Again the Quarriers had an answer to close out the third quarter to push the lead back to eight points by the end of the quarter at 34-26.  Multiple times Vermillion was able to cut the lead in half in the fourth quarter.  The Tanagers trailed 41-45 and then again 47-51 late in the fourth.  Vermillion pulled within two points at 50-52, but Emma Paul knocked down two free throws with :06.1 left on the clock to make it a four point game at 54-53.  Madisen Martinez made a three-point shot with just a couple of seconds on the clock, but the Tanagers were out of timeouts, and the Quarriers did not inbound the ball and let the clock run out for the 54-53 win.

Jayda Knuppe led the Quarriers with 21 points and six rebounds in the game.  Emma Paul added nine points and six rebounds.  Kali Graham added eight points, and Arial Hoffman finished with seven points.  Graham and Hoffman both pulled down four rebounds in the game.

Dell Rapids (10-4) will play in the Dak-12 Conference Classic on Saturday, January 28th, in Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers are the #3 seed and will play #4 West Central at around 5:00 p.m.  All the games of the Dak-12 Conference Classic will be broadcast on Big Sioux Media.  First game starts at 10:00 a.m.
