Quarrier Boys Rally in Third Quarter, Win Third Straight

The Dell Rapids Quarriers turned a 31-31 tie into a 63-46 win against the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers at the Dak-12/NEC Clash in Madison on Saturday, January 29th.

The two teams played a very close game for just over two quarters.  Dell Rapids had a 17-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.  The lead doubled by halftime, 31-25.  Roncalli made back-to-back three pointers to start the third quarter to tie the game 31-31.  The Quarriers then went on a 12-3 run the rest of the quarter for a 43-34 lead.  They continued to pull away in the fourth quarter for the win.

Dell Rapids had three players finish in double figures.  Brayden Pankonen had 17 points.  Landon Ruesink had 13 points.  Jack Henry finished 10 points, and Shane Stone finished with seven points.

The Quarriers will have a big game on Tuesday, February 1st when they host the 12-1 Flandreau Fliers.

Dell Rapids Boys Win Overtime Thriller over Vermillion

The Dell Rapids Quarriers needed extra time, but came away with a 62-57 win in overtime against the Vermillion Tanangers on Thursday, January 27th.

The Dell Rapids offense was on fire to start the game.  The Quarriers opened the game on a 10-0 run and finished the first quarter with an 18-6 lead.  The script was flipped in the second quarter.  Vermillion outscored Dell Rapids 16-8 to pull within four, 26-22, at halftime.

The Tanagers were able to cut the Quarrier lead down to one point by the end of the third quarter.  Dell Rapids led 39-38 heading into the fourth quarter.  Vermillion took the lead right away in the fourth quarter.  The two teams continued to battle back-and-forth the remainder of the fourth quarter, and regulation ended with a 51-51 tie.  Each team only score two points in the first half of over time.  The game was tied 53-53 with 2:10 to go.  The Quarriers then went on a 9-4 run over the final two minutes for the win.

Dell Rapids shot 49% (25-51) from the field, 28% (5-18) from three-point area, but only 50% (7-14) from the free-throw line.  Vermillion shot 32% (17-53) from the field, 29% (5-17) on three pointers, and 75% (18-24) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures.  Jack Henry had 21 points, four rebounds, and two steals.  Brayden Pankonen had 18 points, five assists, three rebounds, two steals, and two blocked shots.  Shane Stone added 10 points and five rebounds.  Camden Justice had eight points and three rebounds, and Landon Ruesink finished with five points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Quarrier Boys Fend off Elks for Win

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys tried to put the game away in the third quarter, but the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks kept hanging close.  Dell Rapids was still able to get a 62-57 road win on Tuesday, January 25th.

Most of the game was close, and the first quarter was played to a 15-15 tie.  Dell Rapids held the first advantage at a quarter break when the lead 30-26 at halftime.  The Quarriers had a 10-point lead in the third quarter, but the Elks came back and made a layup at the end of the quarter to cut the lead to 43-38.  The Quarriers were able to keep a four-to-seven point lead throughout the fourth quarter as the two teams traded baskets through most of it.  In the closing seconds, the Quarriers were able to get a fast-break layup by Camden Justice as he was fouled.  Justice made the extra free-throw to put Dell Rapids ahead by seven to secure the win.

Dell Rapids shot 49% (22-45) from the field, but did not make a three-pointer in the game.  The Quarriers were a strong 75% (18-24) from the free-throw line.  The Elks finished the game shooting 47% (22-47), 29% (4-14) from three-point area, and 75% (9-12) from the free-throw line.

Three players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Brayden Pankonen had 17 points, four steals, and three rebounds.  Jack Henry had 16 points and four rebounds.  Landon Ruesink finished with 15 points, three steals, two rebounds, and two assists.  Aiden Boechler added seven points, and Justice had five points.

Dell Rapids (8-3) will host Vermillion on Thursday, January 27th.

Winning Streak Ends for Quarrier Boys in Elk Point

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys saw their four-game winning streak come to an end at Elk Point on Saturday, January 22nd.  The Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies handed the Quarriers their third loss of the season, 74-67.

The first half was back and fourth with neither team getting much of an advantage.  The Huskies had a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 19-17.  Dell Rapids flipped the script and had a two point lead at halftime 40-38.  The Quarriers scored the first five points of the third quarter for a 45-38 lead with 7:15 to play in the quarter.  The Huskies held Dell Rapids to just six points the remainder of the quarter and led 54-51 heading into the fourth quarter.  Elk Point-Jefferson continued to grow the lead in the fourth quarter.  They led 61-54 with 5:15 to play and then 69-59 with 2:00 to go.  Dell Rapids got within three points, 70-67 with :45 left, but the Huskies made four straight from the free-throw line to hold the win.

The Quarriers shot 47% (24-51) from the field, 31% (8-26) from three-point area, and only 44% (11-25) from the free-throw line.  The Huskies were 53% (26-49) shooting in the game, 42% (8-19) from three-point area, and 56% (14-25) from the free-throw line.

Brayden Pankonen had 22 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Landon Ruesink had 16 points and four rebounds.  Jack Henry finished with 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Aiden Boechler had five points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Shane Stone added five points and four rebounds.

Dell Rapids (7-3) will travel to Elkton-Lake Benton on Tuesday, January 25th.

Quarriers Complete Huge Comeback Against Madison in Overtime

The Dell Rapids Quarriers were two minutes and six points away from having a running clock on them in the second half at home on Thursday, January 20th.  The Madison Bulldogs had a 15-0 run in the first quarter and led 23-8 at the break.  They started the second quarter on an 8-0 run and extended their lead 35-11 with 2:00 to play in the half.  The Quarriers were able to end the half on an 8-2 run to make the score 37-19.  That little run sparked the Quarrier comeback.

Dell Rapids returned to the court with a new energy in the second half.  The Quarriers got the lead down to 46-32 with 2:15 to play in the third quarter.  They then finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 48-40 heading into the fourth quarter.  Halfway through the fourth quarter, Madison led 55-49.  Just a minute later, the game was tied 56-56 with 2:54 to play in regulation.  Camden Justice gave Dell Rapids their first lead since early in the first quarter with a layup with :52 on the clock.  Madison tied the game 58-58 on their next possession.  Neither team scored on their final possession, and the game headed to overtime.

The Bulldogs made the first basket just twenty seconds into overtime.  The score remained 60-58 in favor of the Bulldogs for almost three minutes.  Jack Henry made a breakaway layup with :49 to tie the game.  Moments later Henry made a steal and threw down a dunk to give Dell Rapids a 62-60 lead with :28 to go.  After a missed shot by the Bulldogs, Landon Ruesink was fouled after the rebound.  He sank both free throws to put the game out of reach.  Aiden Boechler added one more free throw, and Dell Rapids won 65-60.

Dell Rapids shot 41% (21-51) from the field, 41% (9-21) on three pointers, and 52% (14-27) from the free-throw line.  After a strong first half, Madison finished 40% (25-62) shooting, 11% (2-18) from three-point area, and 53% (8-15) from the free-throw line.

Henry finished with 20 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists.  Ruesink had 18 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.  Justice had 14 points, all in the second half, and five rebounds.  Brayden Pankonen added 11 points, six rebounds, four steals, and two assists.  Boechler had two points and four rebounds, and Shane Stone had six rebounds.

The Quarriers improve to 7-2 on the season.  They will travel to Elk Point on Saturday, January 22nd.

Quarriers Cruise to Victory in Parker

Once the Dell Rapids Quarriers took the lead in the first quarter, they continued to cruise to a 77-58 road win over the Parker Pheasants on Monday, January 17th.

Parker delivered the initial blow in this battle taking a 9-4 lead with 5:40 in the opening quarter.  The Pheasants still lead 14-12 with 2:45 left, but Dell Rapids ended the quarter on a 10-2 run for a 22-16 lead.  Dell Rapids continued that momentum throughout the rest of the game.  The Quarriers outscored Parker 25-16 in the second quarter to take a 47-32 lead into halftime.  Dell Rapids put the game out of reach midway through the third quarter.  They went on a 15-4 run to start the second half for a 62-36 lead with 3:44 to play in the third quarter.  The Pheasants ended the third quarter on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 65-46, but that was as close as they would get.

The Quarriers shot 49% (30-61) from the field, 25% (5-20) from three-point area, and 71% (12-17) from the free-throw line.  Parker shot 55% (24-44) in the game, 30% (3-1) from three-point area, and 54% (7-13) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids forced 17 Parker turnovers on 13 steals.

Five players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Jack Henry had 18 points, three rebounds, and three assists.  Landon Ruesink had 14 points, three assists, three steals, and two rebounds.  Brayden Pankonen finished with 13 points, five steals, and three rebounds.  Camden Justice had 10 points and eight rebounds.  Aiden Boechler also had 10 points along with three rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.  Shane Stone added four points and nine rebounds.

Dell Rapids (6-2) will look to keep the winning streak going when they host Madison on Thursday, January 20th.

Quarrier Boys Score Big Win over Sioux Falls Christian

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team got a big win at home over the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Tuesday, January 11th.  The Quarriers ended the game on an 11-2 run for a 66-57 win.

Dell Rapids led for most of the game.  The Quarriers led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter.  Holding just a one point lead, 23-22, with 4:00 to go in the second quarter, Dell Rapids ended the half on a 13-4 run for a 36-26 halftime lead.  The Chargers cut into that gap throughout the third quarter.  Dell Rapids held just a 48-44 lead heading into the final quarter.  Sioux Falls Christian finally got the game tied 55-55 with two minutes to play, but Dell Rapids went on an 11-2 run for the victory.

The Quarriers shot 54% (20-37) from the field, 63% (10-16) on three pointers, and 80% (16-20) from the free-throw line.  The Chargers were 37% (21-57) shooting in the game, 14% (2-14) from three-point area, and 68% (13-19) from the free-throw line.

Brayden Pankonen had 21 points, four rebounds, and two assists.  Jack Henry had 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks.  Landon Ruesink added nine points, five rebounds, and five assists.  Camden Justice finished with eight points.  Shane Stone had six points, and Aiden Boechler had five points.

Dell Rapids (5-2) will travel to Parker on Monday, January 17th.

Free Throws Key to Quarrier Win in Canton

The game came down to the free throw line in Canton Thursday, January 6th between the Dell Rapids Quarriers and Canton C-Hawks.  Dell Rapids made 13 of their 19 attempts, while Canton was just 4-15 in the game.  The Quarriers also made enough free-throws in the closing minute of the game for a 69-66 win.

The Quarriers were able to build a lead in the first half.  They ended the first quarter leading 22-16 and grew that lead to 39-30 by halftime.  Dell Rapids, however, went cold in the third quarter.  Canton took advantage and tied the game 44-44 with 3:25 left in the quarter.  They then took the lead moments later.  The C-Hawks still lead 50-48 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Quarriers were able to put the third quarter behind them and scored 21 points in the final quarter to come away with the win.

Four players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids.  Brayden Pankonen had 19 points, six steals, four rebounds, and three assists.  Landon Ruesink had 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Jack Henry added 14 points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals.  Shane Stone also had 14 points along with four rebounds and two steals.  Aiden Boechler had a team-high eight rebounds.

Dell Rapids (4-2) will host Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, January 11th.

Late Rally Not Enough for Quarrier Boys

The Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team finished the game on a 14-0 run, but ran out of time as they fell to the West Central Trojans 60-51 on the road on Monday, January 3rd.

The Quarriers did have an early lead to start the game.  Dell Rapids led 7-4 with 4:30 to play in the quarter, but by the end of the quarter West Central had a 14-9 advantage.  The lead grew by two points more by halftime.  The Trojans led 30-23 at the break.

Dell Rapids was on the wrong end of a 10-0 run to start the third quarter.  West Central pushed the lead to 40-23 with 5:45 in the quarter.  The Trojans led 54-35 heading into the fourth quarter.  The lead grew to 23 points at 60-37 with 5:45 left in the game.  Dell Rapids then had their 14-0 run, but the comeback effort ran out of time.

The Quarriers finished the game shooting 42% (22-52) from the field, just 1-7 on three-pointers, and 46% (6-13) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids out-rebounded the Trojans 33-26, but turned the ball over 17 times in the game.

Three players finished in double figures.  Landon Ruesink had 18 points and three assists.  Shane Stone ended with 12 points and five rebounds.  Jack Henry had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds along with three steals and three assists.

Dell Rapids (3-2) will travel to Canton on Thursday, January 6th.

Quarrier Boys Get Entringer Classic Win over Hamlin

Every time the Hamlin Chargers made a run at the lead, the Dell Rapids Quarriers had an answer.  Dell Rapids won the close battle 58-51 at the Entringer Classic at Brookings High School on Friday, December 31st.

Dell Rapids started the game on a 7-0 run and led 10-2 in the first quarter.  The Chargers closed the quarter on a 7-0 run of their own to make the score 10-9 at the break.  After Hamlin tied the game 15-15, Dell Rapids went on another 7-0 run to lead 22-15 and ended the first half with a 26-22 advantage.

The Quarriers would build a lead of five-to-seven points throughout the second half, but Hamlin would find a way to get the game within a single possession.  Dell Rapids held a five-point lead, 44-39, goings into the fourth quarter.  The Chargers fought back to pull within a point, 52-51, with 1:57 to go in the game, but Dell Rapids sank four free throws and a layup in that time for the 58-51 win.

Dell Rapids shot 50% (21-42) from the field, 36% (4-11) on three-pointers, and a perfect 12-12 on free throws.  Hamlin was 44% (18-41) shooting, 53% (10-19) on three-pointers, and 63% (5-8) on free throws.

Brayden Pankonen, named the game’s MVP, had 19 points, five rebounds, and an assist.  Landon Ruesink had 12 points, two rebounds, and two assists.  Shane Stone finished with eight points and four rebounds.  Jack Henry finished with seven points, two rebounds, and an assist.  Camden Justice added six points, five rebounds, and  two assists.  Aiden Boechler also had six points and three rebounds.

Dell Rapids (3-1) will travel to West Central on Monday, January 3rd.
