Quarrier Boys Blow Past Elk Point-Jefferson

January 25, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys exploded for 92 points in a 92-59 win over the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies on Saturday, January 24th, in Dell Rapids.

“Going into the EPJ game, our main focus was to improve our offensive movement and efficiency.  Our players really bought into that focus, and we had great ball movement from the opening tip.  We shot the ball much better, and I really think it was because of the better ball movement.  We have very capable shooters from the perimeter and when the ball gets moved to a shooter that has a chance to have his feet set and get a good gauge on the rim, perimeter shots are easier to make,” said head coach Jason Fersdahl.

The Quarriers shot 54% (32-59) from the field, 44% (11-25) from three-point area, and 94% (17-18) from the free-throw line in the game.  Dell Rapids also had 40 team rebounds, 21 assists, 11 steals, and only turned the ball over eight times.

Ty Hoglund finished with 31 points, five rebounds, and two assists in the game.  Riley Schimdt had 22 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.  Sheldon Siemonsma added 11 points and three rebounds.  Sam White tossed in 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.  Zane Schumaker finished with nine points, nine assists, and four steals.

Dell Rapids improves to 10-0 on the year, and 6-0 in the Dak-12 Conference.  The Quarriers will host Vermillion on Thursday, January 29th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Boys Remain Undefeated

January 19, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team remained undefeated in regular season and conference play with a 61-45 win over Beresford on Friday, January 16th, in Beresford.

“Our pressure defense was outstanding early in the game and our players were flying around all over the court as we jumped out to an 18-0 first quarter lead.  We were able to generate turnovers early and our guards did a good job of pushing the ball in transition,” said head coach Jason Fersdahl.

Dell Rapids did not allow a single point in the first quarter, and the Quarriers held an 18-0 lead at the first break.  The pressure defense continued in the second quarter, and the Quarriers outscored Beresford 16-11 to take a 34-11 lead into halftime.

“Beresford was able to hit some perimeter shots in the second half to cut into our large lead, but our guys responded by buckling down on defense once again in the 4th quarter,” said Fersdahl.

Beresford found some offensive rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring Dell Rapids 20-10 to cut the Quarrier lead to 44-31.  That was as close as Beresford would get as the Quarriers closed out the game outscoring the Watchdogs 17-14 in the final quarter.

“We got careless with the ball in the second half and we ended the night with a season high in turnovers, which was disappointing because we were hoping to get a lot more shots attempts up in this game.  We did not shoot the ball very well from the perimeter, but we did finish well when our players drove to the basket or entered to the post as we finished the night shooting 62% from inside the arc,” added Fersdahl.

Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 48% (25-52) from the field, just 13% (2-15) from the three-point area, and 64% (9-14) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers had 30 total rebounds, turned the ball over 18 times, had 11 assists, and 17 steals.

Ty Hoglund finished with 23 points, four rebounds, and four steals.  Zane Schumaker added 13 points, six rebounds, and six steals.  Tanner Heim had nine points, and Adam Karst and Ben Hammer each had five points apiece.

The Quarriers improve to 7-0 overall and 4-o in the Dak-12 Conference.  Dell Rapids will travel to Garretson to take on the Blue Dragons on Tuesday, January 20th.

Quarrier Boys Cruise to Fifth Straight Win

January 11, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

NewDRLogoOn a night in which the ’94-’95 Quarrier boys basketball team was honored at halftime, the Dell Rapids Quarrier boys basketball team had no trouble earning their fifth win of the season.  The Quarriers defeated the Chamberlain Cubs 71-31 on Friday, January 9th, in Dell Rapids.

Head coach Jason Fersdahl said, “It was great to visit with these past players and our team really wanted to play hard with those guys in attendance.”

The Quarriers started the game on a 13-0 run over the first five minutes and led 21-3 after the first quarter.  Dell Rapids continued their strong defense in the second quarter.  They held the Cubs to just six points in the second quarter while scoring 24 to take a 45-9 lead into halftime.  Both teams scored 16 points in the third quarter, and Dell Rapids led 60-25 after the third quarter.  The Quarriers out-scored Chamberlain 10-6 in the final quarter on their way to the win.

Dell Rapids shot 46% (29-63) from the field, 35% (8-23) from the three-point area, and 100% (5-5) from the free-throw line.  The Quarriers also had 31 team rebounds, 21 assists, and 17 steals.

Ben Hammer had 12 points and three rebounds in the game.  Ty Hoglund added 12 points, three rebounds, and three steals.  Sam White had eight rebounds, and Riley Schmidt and Hunter Hansen each had four assists.

Fersdahl said, “Our team came out with great energy on the defensive end, and we were able to get out into the passing lanes to get deflections and steals early in the game.  We settled for some jump shots early in the game, but once we got into the flow we were able to find cutters going to the basket and our guards did a nice job of breaking down the Cubs’ defense with dribble penetration.  We rebounded the ball very well in the first half and did not give up many second chance opportunities.”

The game was the first basketball action the team was able to have since Tuesday’s (January 6th) win over Pipestone Area.

“It was a rough week with all of the disruptions due to the weather as we missed out on three days worth of practice.  We need to keep getting repetitions in practice to keep building toward establishing some consistency when we hit the court, and we need to keep working at improving our shooting percentage by getting more shots up in practice,” said Fersdahl.

The Quarriers improved to 5-0 on the year.  Dell Rapids will travel to Sioux Falls to take on region-foe Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Tuesday, January 13th.  A link will be provided on Big Sioux Media for the webcast from Sioux Falls Christian.

Members of the ’94-’95 Quarrier team that took 5th place in the State A tournament that were honored at halftime include Matt Wilber, Jeremy Risty, Andrew Bisson, Baron Hedin, Andrew Johnson, Jeremy Kudera, Jamie Davis, Ben Bender, Josh Ljunggren, Tom Miller, Seth Ahrendt, and Todd Fletcher.  Coaches were Mick Hoglund and Steve Hansen.
