Schools Make Plans for Make-up Days

March 18, 2019 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

SchoolMakeUpDaysWith the harshness of winter and school related closings hopefully behind us, both Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary schools have made changes to the 2018-2019 school calendar to make up for the snow days this year.

Dell Rapids St Mary has made the following updates to their calendar after discussions with staff and EAC.  The end of the 3rd quarter will now end on March 26th.  March 27th will now be a full day of school instead of an early dismissal.  April 18th will be an In-Session day.  May 21st and 22nd will be full days of school.  May 23rd will be the final day of school with an 11:30 a.m. dismissal, and May 24th will be a teacher work day.

The Dell Rapids School Board approved the following changes during their regular meeting to the Dell Rapids school calendar.  March 27th will be a regular full day of school instead of an early dismissal.  May 22nd, 23rd and 24th will be added to the end of the school year with Friday, May 24th currently planned as the final day of school.

Both schools have said that these plans could change if more days of snow days are added before the end of the year.

Drive with Caution, School Starts Monday

August 18, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids school year gets underway on Monday, August 20th, and motorists are being reminded of the 15 mph speed limit in school zones.  Big Sioux Media spoke with a representative from the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department and he would like to remind motorists to use extra caution in school zones and to leave for your destination a little earlier than normal allowing for the slowdown and the number of cars and congestion around the schools.  School age children get extra excited about the start of a school year, and often times are not paying attention while crossing streets or exiting cars to get onto the school grounds.  School zones are typically patrolled more heavily for a few weeks for safety purposes.

Getting Ready for School

August 1, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Another school year is upon us as the Dell Rapids Public school students (and parents) will begin school registration this week.  A complete listing of grade registration times are located on this website under ‘School News’ (just re-click on the News button and then School News).

A couple of other changes occurred over the summer for everyone to be aware of including the new start time for Dell Rapids Public schools.  The new time approved by the board in late June will be 8:30 a.m.   And, on the subject of the school board, one new member was added this summer. Steve Stofferahn has become a part of the board while Tom Morris is the new President of the Board of Education.  Another item decided this summer was there will be two meetings of the school board on a monthly basis (the pay for board members stays the same as each member will receive less per meeting, but equating to the same dollar amount).  This school year also welcomes a new Superintendent to our community.  Summer Schultz was hired to replace Tom Ludens.  Big Sioux Media will be interviewing Schultz in the near future and will have the question/answer session posted here.

Special Session of School Board

May 30, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids School Board met in special session Tuesday afternoon.   Board President Brian Davis says, following the executive session, a determination to address an employee grievance report was made.  Building secretaries will now be working an 18 hour weekly schedule per their employment agreements and summer schedules will be worked out with their building principals, predetermined and consistent with all hours worked between 8am and 5pm.  Also, when the district secretary is gone for planned absences, other secretaries will fill in on a rotating basis.

Other personnel items addressed included an amendment to Dr John Jewett’s contract to include only Technology Director and not Elementary Principal, plus the Superintendent can advertise for another elementary principal.  The board also voted not to renew the contracts for Jeanette Penning and Melvin Penning.
