Mudcats Beat PBR at “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” Night

June 23, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Friday night baseball during Quarry Days between the two amateur baseball teams from Dell Rapids has seen many exciting and intense games.  This year during the 25th annual Take Me Out to the Ballgame event (which was streamed live on Big Sioux Media) looked to be more one-sided than not with the Mudcats jumping out to a 2-run lead after one complete inning and Matt Wilbur on the mound for the Mudcats in total control.  The home team added another run in the 2nd and the 3rd but went scoreless in the 4th.  Holding a 4 nothing lead into the bottom of the 5th Nate Henry jacked a two run homer moving it up to a 6-nothing score.  And then the biggest run producing inning for the Mudcats came in the bottom of the 6th when they produced 3 more runs off of PBR started, Kevin Krull.  With the score sitting at 9-zip, Krull was done on the mound and Dale Solberg took over in relief and sat the Mudcats down in order not allowing any more runs.  PBR also managed 4 runs of their own in the top of the 8th inning (the final inning for Wilbur on the mound).  In the top of the 9th, Mark Hauck came in relief and got the save.  Travis Peters was 3 for 4 while Hauck and Henry were both 2 for 4 for the Mudcats while PBR managed only 6 hits.  The big hitter was Bruce Mogen, 2 for 4.

Dell Rapids Little League Coach a Legend Camp Leader

June 20, 2012 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Every year the HyVee/Sanford Legends Camp is held which provides free specialized training in multiple sports.  These sessions are conducted by professional athletes and the region’s best college players and coaches.  One such Dell Rapids Little League coach is Jeff Holm.  Holm  has been coordinating the baseball portion of the Legends Camp for the past 11 years.  He is responsible for organizing and coordinating the coaches that will help put on the baseball clinic.  Holm said that lining up the help can be challening especially in recent years as the camp time has moved to Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30, and typically Fridays have become the make-up date for local baseball teams which can take away coaches and participants in the camp.

Holm said that he doesn’t make the final decision on who the legend will be for the baseball clinic, but does provide suggestions.  He said that it all comes down to the timing of schedules, who’s available, what the budget is, and who might be a good regional draw for this area.  This year’s baseball legend was Jack Morris.

While Holm’s main duty prior to the camp is to line up the coaches that assist the legend in the baseball clinic, he is the coordinator with the legend during the day of the clinic.  He can be seen ushering the legend around to the different stations throughout the afternoon, assigning the coaches to the different stations, and being the overall center of command during the afternoon.

This year along with Holm, six other Dell Rapids Little League coaches took part in helping with the legends camp.  They were Jody Schumaker, Danny Miller, Jeff Welbig, Nate Henry, Greg Gullickson and Matt Larson.
