Dell Rapids finishes third in VFW Region 4A

Dell Rapids finished 2-2 and in third place in the age 13/14 South Dakota VFW Region 4A tournament held in Madison this week. Eight teams competed for two spots in the State VFW Tournament to be held in Humboldt July 27-29. Madison and Big Stone City/Ortonville qualified for the state tournament.


Big Stone City/Ortonville 4, Dell Rapids 3

BSC/Ortonville scored the winning run with two outs in the final inning after Dell Rapids had rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take the lead. The loss eliminated Dell Rapids from the tournament and awarded BSC/Ortonville a spot in the state tournament.

Trey Randel pitched the first four innings for Dell Rapids and held BSC/Ortonville to two unearned runs on four hits and two strike-outs. Brett Mogen relieved Randel in the fifth with runners at first and second and no outs. Catcher Joel Brust had a hand in all three outs by starting two pick-off plays and catching a pop-up to end the threat. Mogen pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up three hits and two unearned runs. Ty Hoglund recorded the final out of the seventh inning.

Dell Rapids scored one run in the fourth when Hoglund singled, stole second, reached third on a sacrifice fly and scored on a passed ball. Dell Rapids took its first lead of the game 3-2 in the sixth. Hoglund singled, stole second, and scored on Casey Hansen’s single. With two outs Seth Andersen singled home Hansen for the go-ahead run.

Dell Rapids was unable to hold the lead. Mogen recorded two outs on strike-outs but a single, stolen base and error put the tying run on third. BSC/Ortonville capitalized on another error and tied the game. Two more singles gave them the win and state tournament bid.


Madison 14’s 11, Dell Rapids 2

Hunter Jamison pitched a complete game for Madison and held Dell Rapids to five hits.

Mogen singled and doubled. Trevor Pulscher had two singles. Hoglund added a single.

Mogen took the loss with 3 1/3 innings giving up five hits and three runs. Hoglund pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed five hits and four runs while striking out five. Casey Hansen pitched the final inning.

The win by Madison put them into the championship game and into the state tournament.


Dell Rapids 14, Castlewood 0

Tanner Heim pitched a one-hit seven inning game for Dell Rapids to gain a win in the second round.

Heim’s bid for a no-hitter was broken up with a single in the seventh inning. He struck out 12 and walked five.

Nine players contributed to the Dell Rapids 11-hit attack. Heim tripled and singled. Mogen singled twice. Hoglund, Hansen, Brust, Trevor Pulscher, Eric Klein, Nick Hoffman and Randel all added hits.


Dell Rapids 7, Gary/Canby 3

Four runs in the first two innings gave Dell Rapids the lead and pushed them to a 7-3 first round win over Gary/Canby.

Hoglund led the offense with a double, single and two stolen bases. Mogen, Brust, Randel, Pulscher and Hunter Hansen each added a hit.

Mick Hoglund Elected to Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame

Three recently-retired standouts and two past greats will be inducted into the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame this year.  New inductees include former Lake Norden Lakers teammates Mick Hoglund of Dell Rapids and Paul Raasch of Webster, Kent Alm of Aberdeen, Jon Westling of Yankton and Mike West of Philip.  Hoglund was also a member of the Dell Rapids PBR team.

The group will be recognized on Saturday, Aug. 11 during the final weekend of the 2012 State Amateur Baseball Tournament in Mitchell.  They will inducted during a banquet slated for Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Lake Norden Community Center.  Ticket information and more details on the banquet will be announced in the coming weeks.

PBR Wins Final League Game

Dell Rapids PBR won their final Cornbelt League game of the 2012 season against Humboldt/Hartford 14-1 in seven innings at Rickeman Field Sunday night.  PBR pounded out 21 hits over the seven innings, led by Clarence Fjellenger with four hits and an RBI.  Jay Bentz added three singles and four RBI.  Dan Conrad had two doubles with three RBI and Andy Dunn had three singles and three RBI.

Dunn also picked up the win on the mound pitching all seven innings giving up just one run, which was unearned, on two hits, three walks and struck out nine.  Both hits against Dunn went to Bucky Nettles as two singles.

PBR will next play in the district tournament which will run July 20-28 in Salem.

Brookings Over Dell Rapids in Final Game

The Dell Rapids Little League All-Stars played in their final game of the 2012 SD/ND Little League All-Star Tournament Pool Play yesterday.  Brookings handed Dell Rapids a tough loss as Brookings came back to beat Dell Rapids 5-4 in the final inning after Dell Rapids lead the entire game.  Logan R. was 3-4 in the game with a double and two singles.

Fargo Over Dell Rapids All-Stars

The Dell Rapids Little League All-Stars played in their second game of the 2012 SD/ND Little League All-Star Tournament Pool Play yesterday, June 14th against Fargo.  Fargo handed Dell Rapids their second loss in pool play by a score of 7-2.  Austin E. pitched six strong innings for Dell Rapids and Carter G. had two singles in the loss.  Dell Rapids will play their final pool play game this afternoon, July 15th, at 1:00 p.m. against Brookings in Valley Springs.

Brandon Valley Beats Dell Rapids

In the first game of the 2012 ND/SD Little League All-Star Tournament of Pool C, Brandon Valley defeated the Dell Rapids All-Stars 13-4 in Valley Springs.  Adam N. lead the Dell Rapids team offensively with two singles on the night.  Dell Rapids will play Fargo this evening in their second game of pool play at 5:00 p.m.

PBR Beats Madison

Dell Rapids PBR left 13 men on base, but scored enough to beat the Madison Broncos 9-7 at Rickeman Field Thursday night (July 12).  PBR never trailed in the game jumping out to a 4-0 lead after 3rd inning.  Madison cut the lead in half scoring two in the top of the 4th, but PBR scored three in their half of the 4th to take a 7-2 lead.  Madison would chip away getting as close as 8-7 after the 7th inning.  PBR would add a run in the bottom of the 8th to hold on to the 9-7 win.

Dale Solberg picked up the win for PBR pitching 6 2/3 innings giving six runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits and striking out nine..  Landon Klock pitched the final 2 1/3 innings giving up one run on four hits while striking out two.  Ray Wagner took the loss for Madison pitching 4 1/3 innings giving up eight runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out four.  Chris Brozik pitched the rest of the game for Madison giving up one run on five hits and striking out four.

Kevin Krull lead PBR with four hits in the ball game and had 3 RBI.  Landon Klock had two hits and an RBI, and Clarence Fjellenger had a double with 2 RBI on the night.

PBR will host Humboldt in their final league game on Sunday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Rickeman Field.  The game will be webcasted.

Mudcats and Canova 1, 2 in Polls

The Dell Rapids Mudcats retained the top spot in the Class B South Dakota Amateur Baseball Polls this week, while Canova jumped to the number 2 spot.  Crofton, NE is third this week followed by Redfield and Alexandria to round out the top five.

The Mudcats and Canova Gang will square off in a battle of the top two teams in the state and the top two teams in the Cornbelt League on Thursday night in Canova at 7:30 p.m.  The winner of the ball game will take over first place in the Cornbelt League as both teams are currently 18-2 in league play.

Three Dell Rapids Little League Teams in Championship Games

Three Dell Rapids Little League teams were in the championship games of their respective MinnDak Tournament brackets on Sunday afternoon.  Dell Rapids Severtson Spinal Care was in the championship game of the Pee Wee Silver Bracket against Garretson Orange.  Dell Rapids fell behind early, but came back with a couple of big innings late in the game to take first place in their bracket with a 14-8 win.

Dell Rapids Dairy Queen fought their way back into the championship game of the Midget Silver Bracket after losing their first game Friday night and took on Dell Rapids Jody’s Collision and Auto, who made it to the championship game through the winner’s side of the bracket.  Dell Rapids Jody’s defeated Dell Rapids Dairy Queen in the Sunday afternoon championship game.

All seven of the Dell Rapids Little League teams played very well in this year’s MinnDak League end of the season tournaments.
