De Smet Girls Fall in Back and Forth Battle

The De Smet Bulldog girls basketball team came out on the wrong side of a back-and-forth battle with the Deubook Area Dolphins on Friday, December 8th.  The Dolphins got the 47-46 win.

The first quarter featured three ties and ended with a 7-7 score.  The second quarter started with ties of 9-9 and 11-11.  Deubrook broke the tie with a three-point shot for a 14-11 lead.  The Dolphins were able to stay in front the rest of the quarter and led 22-18 at halftime.  The Dolphins extended their lead to 27-20 early in the third quarter.  De Smet then went on a 9-0 run for a 29-27 advantage.  After a 29-29 tie, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run and led 36-29 going into the fourth quarter.

Deubrook started the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run to regain the lead 38-36.  The score was tied again 40-40, and then the Dolphins went ahead 44-40.  The Bulldogs scored five in a row and went back in front 45-44.  The Dolphins took the lead again, 46-45, with about a minute to play.  They added to the lead with a free-throw with :15.8 seconds to play.  With under :10 to go, Ivey Schoenfelder made one of two free throws to make the score 47-46.  De Smet couldn’t get the steal of the inbound pass and had to foul.  The Dolphins missed both free-throws, and De Smet grabbed the rebound with just under :04 to play.  They raced up the court and got a good look from the right wing for a game-winning shot at the buzzer, but the shot just missed giving Deubrook the win.

Hazel Luethmers finished with 24 points.  Alyssa Asleson had eight points, and Mirra Beck finished with four points.
