Late Run Lifts De Smet over Cardinal Girls

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals led the De Smet Bulldogs for three and a half quarters at the Girls Entringer Classic in Colman on Saturday, December 17th.  But an 11-0 run to end the game gave the Bulldogs a 47-37 win over the Cardinals.

St Mary started fast and took a 7-1 lead.  They ended the first quarter ahead 12-7.  The Cardinals held De Smet to just two points for most of the second quarter and led 20-9 with 1:40 left in the half.  The Bulldogs ended the quarter on a 4-0 run for a 20-13 halftime score.  De Smet continued their run into the third quarter and scored the first four points to cut the lead to 20-17.  The Bulldogs got within a point a few times in the third quarter, but the Cardinals were able to hold the lead all quarter long.  St Mary led 31-29 heading into the fourth quarter.

De Smet got a three-point basket from Alyssa Asleson and took the lead 32-31 with 7:00 left in the game.  The game was tied 36-36 with 5:00 to go.  The Cardinals broke the tie, 37-36, with a free throw with 4:07 to play, but that was the final point for St Mary.  The Bulldogs ended the game on an 11-0 run, mostly from the free-throw line, to take the win.

The Bulldogs were 39% (15-38) shooting overall, 15% (2-13) from three-point area, and 71% (15-21) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals shot 24% (14-58) from the field, 21% (7-33) on three-point shots, but just 2-8 from the free-throw line.  The Bulldogs out-rebounded St Mary 35-20, but St Mary’s defense forced 24 Bulldog turnovers.

Jada Burke, named the game’s MVP, had 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Emma Albrecht finished with 12 points and five rebounds.  Cori Birkel had nine points, nine rebounds, two steals, and two assists.  Asleson added seven points.  Hazel Luethmers had six points and 10 rebounds.
