Karson Paye scored three times, and Carson Maeschen blocked an extra point to help the Dell Rapids Quarriers hold off the Canton C-Hawks 28-27 in Canton on Friday, October 10th.
Paye put the Quarriers on the board with a 13-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. Ryan Stubbe scored the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. Connor Jones found the end zone later in the quarter on a nine-yard run to put Dell Rapids ahead 14-0. Canton could get a 35-yard touchdown run and extra point to cut the lead to 14-7. The first half ended with a 47-yard touchdown catch by Paye from Dake Eastman. The Quarriers led 20-7 at the break.
The C-Hawks got back into the game with a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter. Dell Rapids led 20-14 at that point. Paye scored his third touchdown on a 26-yard pass from Eastman later in the third quarter. Stubbe added another two-point conversion to extend the lead to 28-14. Canton added another score before the end of the quarter on an eight-yard pass, cutting the lead to 28-21.
With just over five minutes remaining in the game, Canton scored again on a 19-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 28-27. On the extra point attempt, Maeschen was able to bust through the line and get his hand on the ball to block the extra point keeping Dell Rapids ahead by a point. The Quarriers were able to hold off Canton the rest of the game for the one-point win.
Dell Rapids finished with 273 yards of total offense, 200 rushing yards and 73 passing yards. Canton had 227 yards of offense, 125 rushing yards and 102 passing yards. Eastman was 2-7 passing for 73 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Pay had both touchdown catches for 73 yards. Stubbe finished with 18 carries for 85 yards. Kenny Swanson had eight carries for 40 yards. Swanson and Ryan Backer both had 4.5 tackles. Eastman and Jace Brende both had four tackles each. Brende also had an interception. Paye finished with three tackles and an interception returned for a touchdown.
