Quarrier Softball Splits Afternoon Doubleheader

The Dell Rapids Quarrier softball team finished their regular season with two games on Saturday afternoon, May 23rd.  The Quarriers hosted Elk Point-Jefferson and Madison.

Dell Rapids 3, Elk Point-Jefferson 2…8 innings

The Quarriers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to get an exciting, come-from-behind win over the Huskies to start the afternoon.  Elk Point-Jefferson got a run right away in the top of the first inning.  They had runners in scoring position almost all day, but the Quarriers were able to keep them off the board until the eighth inning.  Sylea Sykes delivered a game-tying triple int he bottom of the fifth for a 1-1 score.

The Huskies took advantage of a runner being placed on second to start extra innings.  They took a 2-1 lead with an RBI ground out, but that was the only run they would get.  Parker Matzke made the most of reaching base on a dropped third strike.  Chloe Carver advanced to third on that pitch.  Matzke stole second later in the inning to put runners on second and third with one out.  Ella Johnson hit a fly ball to right center field that drifted far enough that the center fielder couldn’t squeeze the ball in her glove.  That allowed Carver and Matzke to score to win the game.

Johnson finished with two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Sykes also had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI.  Emma Lanpher and Lexi Scherff both had two singles each.  Scherff also pitched all eight innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Madison 16, Dell Rapids 0

The Bulldogs scored in every inning and held Dell Rapids to just four hits in a 16-0 win that ended in five innings.  Madison put the pressure on early.  They scored three runs in the first, four in the second, and five more in the third for a 12-0 lead.  Madison would get two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings for the 16-0 score.

Scherff had two hits in the game.  Johnson and Josie Becker each had one single.  Emily Baker pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed 14 runs, nine earned, on five hits and eight walks with one strikeout.  Scherff pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk with one strikeout.
