The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls took the lead in the second quarter and held off the Vermillion Tanagers for their third straight win. Dell Rapids took the win 60-51 at home on Thursday, January 29th.
Vermillion got out to a quick start and built an 18-9 lead with 3:00 to play in the opening quarter. Dell Rapids rallied to cut the lead down to 20-17 by the end of the first quarter. The Quarriers kept the momentum rolling in the second quarter and built a 31-22 lead with 1:30 left in the half. Dell Rapids led 33-27 at halftime.
The Quarriers maintained a six-to-eight point lead through most of the quarter and even went ahead by 10 points, 47-37, with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter. The Tanagers scored the last three points to make the score 47-40 going into the fourth quarter. Vermillion scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and pulled within two points, 47-45, with 7:15 in the game. The Quarriers were able to hold off any further rally and never let go of the lead.
Dell Rapids shot 48% (24-50) overall in the game, 23% (3-13) from three-point area, and 69% (9-13) from the free-throw line. Vermillion would finish the game shooting 38% (19-50) overall, 25% (5-20) on three-point shots, and 73% (8-11) from the free-throw line.
Rorie Thoreson finished with 28 points, three assists, and three steals. Jersi Schultz had 15 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Elin Schoenhard ended with nine points, six rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots. Taylor Schmidt had four points and five rebounds.
