The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls had to fight through some adversity in the third and fourth quarters but came out on top 61-53 against the Canton C-Hawks in Canton on Thursday, January 8th.
The Quarriers were able to build a four-point lead, 14-10, by the end of the first quarter. They continued to lead through the second quarter and held a 29-23 advantage at halftime. The C-Hawks went on a 7-0 run and took the lead 30-29 with 4:45 to play in the third quarter. Dell Rapids responded with a 14-5 run for a 43-35 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Quarriers extended their lead to 47-35 in the first forty-five seconds of the fourth quarter. Canton went on an 8-0 run and cut the lead to 47-43 with 4:20 to go in the game. Dell Rapids responded with a 6-0 spurt to push the advantage back to 10 points, 53-43, with 3:25 remaining. Canton tried to rally and made the score 55-50 with 1:45 left, but the Quarriers held strong for the win.
Dell Rapids shot 43% (22-51) overall in the game, 41% (7-17) from three-point area, and 43% (10-23) from the free-throw line. Canton finished the game shooting 28% (18-65) overall, 19% (3-16) on three-point shots, and 61% (14-23) from the free-throw line.
Rorie Thoreson had 21 points, five rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Claire Witte had 10 points and six rebounds. Jersi Schultz had eight points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots. Elin Schoenhard had six points, three rebounds, and three assists. Mya DeStigter also had six points with three rebounds.
