Dell Rapids Wins Homecoming Overtime Thriller

The Dell Rapids Quarrier football team won their homecoming game in thrilling fashion over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Friday, September 26th.  The Quarriers won in overtime 22-14 and handed Tri-Valley their first loss of the season.

First Half

Fourth down plays were big in this game.  After a scoreless first quarter, Tri-Valley scored on a four-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter.  The fourth-down completion gave Tri-Valley a 6-0 lead with 11:57 to go in the first half.

Dell Rapids put a score on the board late in the second quarter.  With 1:02 remaining, the Quarriers scored on a nine-yard run by Ryan Stubbe, also on fourth down, to tie the game 6-6.  Stubbe also scored the two-point conversion to give Dell Rapids an 8-6 lead.

Second Half

The third quarter was another scoreless quarter between the two teams.  The Mustangs took the lead on the first play of the fourth quarter.  On another fourth-down play, they scored on an 11-yard pass.  The two-point conversion was also successful with a pass for the Mustangs.  With 11:55 to go in the game, Tri-Valley led 14-6.

Dell Rapids was able to get the equalizer with 5:09 to play in the game.  Stubbe scored again on a two-yard run to tie the score 14-14.  The Quarriers went for the extra point, but the try banged off the cross bar no good to keep the score tied.

Each team possessed the ball in the final two minutes of the game.  The Mustangs had an opportunity to win the game in regulation.  They lined up for a game-winning 32-yard field goal in the final seconds, but the snap went over the head of the holder, and the time expired sending the game into overtime.

The Quarriers took the ball first in the overtime period.  Kenny Swanson scored on a one-yard run.  Their two-point attempt was also good by Stubbe to give them a 22-14 lead.  On a second down play for the Mustangs, a pass was intercepted at the goal line to end the game by Jackson Peppel to give Dell Rapids the win.

Final Team Stats

Dell Rapids had 286 yards of offense, 272 rushing yards and just 14 passing yards.  The Mustangs finished with 198 yards of total offense, 107 passing yards and 91 rushing yards.  Tri-Valley turned the ball over two times, while Dell Rapids had one turnover.  The Mustangs were 3-4 on fourth down tries, and Dell Rapids was 2-3 on fourth down.
