The Dell Rapids Quarrier softball team took second place at the Dak-12 Tournament in Sioux Falls on Monday, April 28th. Dell Rapids earned wins over Lennox, Tri-Valley, and Madison before falling to West Central in the championship game.
Dell Rapids 14, Lennox 2
The Quarriers took the lead in the second inning with nine runs to lead them to a win. The Orioles scored a run in the top of the first. Dell Rapids then scored nine times in the second for a 9-1 lead. They added four more in the third for a 13-1 advantage. Both teams scored a run in the fourth. The Quarriers held Lennox scoreless in the top of the fifth for the win.
Lexi Scherff had four hits and an RBI. Katie Kvigne had three hits, including a double and a home run, with an RBI. Addison Van’t Hof had three hits as well, including a triple, and an RBI. Emma Lanpher ended with a single and home run with three RBIs. Rylee Halverson had a home run and three RBIs. Paige Trewin added a single and three RBIs. Elly Olson and Kayleigh Gillette both had a double. Kvigne pitched five innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits with 11 strikeouts.
Dell Rapids 5, Tri-Valley 2
The Quarriers scored five straight runs late in the game to get the win over the Mustangs. After two scoreless innings, the Mustangs took the lead, 1-0, with a run in the bottom of third. Dell Rapids grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs. They added three more in the top of the fifth for a 5-1 lead. Tri-Valley got just one run back in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Kvigne had two hits and an RBI. Trewin ended with a single and an RBI. Halverson had a single, and Olson added an RBI. Kvigne pitched five innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Dell Rapids 12, Madison 8
A 10-run fourth inning helped Dell Rapids to a come-from-behind win against the Bulldogs. Dell Rapids scored one run in the top of the first, but Madison scored three times in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 lead. The Quarriers cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the third. The Bulldogs had another three-run bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 6-2. Dell Rapids then had 10 runs in the top of the fourth to take a 12-6 lead. Madison scored two more times in the bottom of the fifth, but that wasn’t enough to overtake the Quarriers.
Lanpher had three hits, two of those doubles, with two RBIs. Halverson had a home run and single with four RBIs. Sylea Sykes had two hits, one a home run, and two RBIs. Van’t Hof added two singles and an RBI. Scherff and Olson each had a single and RBI. Kayleigh Gillette and Josie Price both had a hit as well. Kvigne pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs on two hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Scherff pitched two innings and allowed two unearned runs on four hits. Emily Baker pitched 1/3 of an inning and allowed an earned run on a hit with one strikeout.
West Central 5, Dell Rapids 3
The Trojans held off the Quarriers to claim the tournament title, 5-3. Neither team scored in the first two innings. West Central scored four times in the bottom of the third for a 4-0 lead. Dell Rapids got one run in the top of the fourth, West Central got that run back in the bottom of the inning. The Quarriers got two runs on a two-out, two-run double in the top of the fifth by Lanpher, but the Trojans held off any more of a rally.
Lanpher had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs. Scherff, Van’t Hof, and Sykes all had one hit each. Kvigne pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Scherff pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed an earned run on a hit with two walks.
