The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls basketball team overcame 34 turnovers and a five-point deficit with 2:00 to go and earned a 48-46 come-from-behind win over the Beresford Watchdogs on Saturday, December 7th.
Dell Rapids led 12-11 with 1:40 to go in the opening quarter, but Beresford rallied to a 16-12 lead by quarter’s end. Dell Rapids went on a 4-0 run to start the second quarter to tie the score 16-16. Beresford finished the rest of the quarter on a 6-2 scoring advantage to lead 22-18 at halftime.
The Watchdogs were able to extend their lead to a game-high nine points, 31-22, with 3:45 to go in the third quarter. The Quarriers cut the lead to 36-34 by the end of the quarter. Beresford responded with a 4-0 run to start the fourth quarter for a 40-34 lead with 5:00 to go. Dell Rapids pulled within a point, 40-39, over the next minute. The Watchdogs went on a 6-2 run with 2:15 to go to take a 46-41 lead after two made three-point shots on back-to-back possessions. Elly Olson made a three-point shot with 1:45 to play to make the score 46-44. Rorie Thoreson tied the game with a tough, running bank shot with :30 to play. They got the ball back after a turnover, and Thoreson made the game-winning layup on a nice assist from Olson with just :03 left on the clock.
Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 39% (19-49) overall, 40% (6-15) on three-point shots, and 36% (4-11) from the free-throw line. Beresford finished the game shooting 29% (15-52) overall, 25% (4-16) on three-point shots, and 55% (12-22) from the free-throw line.
Thoreson finished with 16 points, three assists, and three steals. Olson added 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Jersi Schultz had 10 points, five rebounds, and four blocked shots. Josie Price had five points and five rebounds. Elin Schoenhard had two points and four rebounds.
