Quarriers Fall in First Volleyball Match of Season

The Dell Rapids Quarriers opened their 2022 season at home against the Elkton-Lake Benton Elks on Tuesday, August 23rd.  Despite Dell Rapids having a lead in all three of the sets, the Elks took the match in three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-20.

The Quarriers held a lead throughout the first half of the first set.  They continued to lead 15-10, and it was at that point the Elks called a timeout.  After the timeout, Elkton-Lake Benton went on a 7-1 run to lead 17-16.  The two teams battled back and forth and were tied 20-20.  The Elks ended the first set on a 5-1 run to win 25-21.

Elkton-Lake Benton built an early 9-4 lead in the second set.  Dell Rapids was able to slowly chip away at the lead and tie the set 15-15.  The teams traded points and were tied 18-18 before Elkton-Lake Benton scored three in a row for a 21-18 advantage.  Dell Rapids tied the score at 21-21, but the Elks ended on a 4-2 run to take the second set 25-23.

In the third set, the Quarriers got out to a quick 9-3 lead.  Dell Rapids continued to hold a lead at the halfway point, 13-7.  The Elks rallied and got the set tied 17-17. The set was once again tied late, 19-19, but another late run by Elkton-Lake Benton secured the set win and the match.

Kylee Fiddelke had 10 kills, three ace serves, two blocks, and two digs.  Maddie Henry finished with nine kills, and Cate Traill had five.  Sophie Randall finished with 30 set assists and five blocks.  Clara Justice and Lauryn Kloth each had four blocks.  Alaina Wolff finished with a team-high 11 digs.  Henry had four digs, and Lexi Ingalls and Randall both had four apiece.

Dell Rapids (0-1) will travel to West Central on Thursday, August 25th.
