The Cardinal defense shut down Estelline as the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals defeated the Estelline Redmen 54-34 on Thursday, December 15th, at Dell Rapids St Mary High School. The two teams traded the lead eight times in the first half, but that’s when the Cardinal locked down on Estelline.
The Cardinals led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter and maintained their two-point lead heading into halftime at 26-24. St Mary then out-scored Estelline 20-3 in the third quarter to take a 46-27 lead. Estelline did not make a field goal in third quarter and only made one in the entire second half. St Mary held the Redmen to one made three-pointer and seven made free-throws in the second half.
St Mary finished the night shooting 22-52 (42%) from the field, 3-21 (14%) from three-point area, and 7-11 (64%) from the free-throw line. The Cardinals had 38 total team rebounds, six assists and 13 steals in the game.
Connor Libis led the team in scoring with 19 points and also had four steals. Luke Brown had nine points and eight rebounds. Zach Geraets and Austin Welbig both had six points. Garret Frost had seven rebounds and Logan Gaspar pulled down six rebounds.
The Cardinals (1-2) will travel to De Smet on Tuesday, December 20th.
