Cougars Pull Away from Quarrier Girls

January 6, 2021 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids Quarrier girls traveled to Salem to play the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars on Tuesday, January 5th in their fifth game away from home.  The Cougars were able to pull away from the Quarriers for a 56-41 win.

A strong defensive effort in the first half kept the game within reach for Dell Rapids.  The two teams ended the first quarter tied 10-10.  The Cougars were able to get a few more shots to fall in the second quarter and ended the half leading 27-20.

A quick 6-0 run by McCook Central/Montrose to start the third quarter gave the Cougars a double-digit lead at 33-20.  The Quarriers cut the lead down to eight at 33-25 with 4:30 to go in the third quarter after a 5-0 run of their own, but that was as close as they would get the remainder of the game.  Dell Rapids was able to get within 10 points early in the fourth quarter, 44-34 with about 7:00 to go, but the Cougars pulled away for the win.

Two players finished in double figures for Dell Rapids. Mady Vanoverbeke had 14 points in the game.  Zoey Hilmoe finished with 12 points.  Haileigh Barnhart finished with seven points, Becky Dorn had five points, and Maggie Shmidt had three points.

Dell Rapids (0-6) will host the Canton C-Hawks in a double-header with the boys on Thursday, January 7th.  Both games can be seen on Big Sioux Media.
