West Central Boys Will Be Experienced Team

The 2021-2022 West Central Trojan boys basketball team will be a very experienced team.  West Central will have eight seniors on this year’s team.  The Trojans finished last year with a 14-8 overall record and a 5-5 record in Dak XII Conference play.  West Central lost to Dell Rapids in the Region 3A semifinals to end their 2020-2021 season.

Top returning players for this season will be Jacob Krempges (senior), Wilson Droge (senior), Grafton Stroup (senior), Jack Linneman (senior), and Carter Schmeichel (junior).  West Central will also have top newcomers Braden Dierickx (senior), Dillon Jackson (senior), Mubarak Ibrahim (senior), Braden Herr (senior), Owen Heath (junior), and Dylan Stromer (junior).

Head coach Jacob Sittig said, “We feel we have the best chance to compete in the top of our conference and in our class as we have had the last 10-15 years.  We are very athletic and fast.  We can score in a variety of ways, but most of all, we have a lot of three-point shooters.  We are extremely deep being able to put eleven players on the court.  And out of those eleven players, we don’t drop off much.  We plan to play very up temp on both ends of the floor to use our depth to the best of our ability.”

The Trojans start the season at home on Friday, December 10th against the team that ended their season last year, the Dell Rapids Quarriers.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Five New Gymnasts Join Trojans

The West Central Trojan gymnastics team will have five new members that will be joining the 2021-2022 team.  The addition of these gymnasts will give head coach Tricia Smith 14 athletes for the varsity and junior varsity teams.

Last season ended with state tournament qualifications for Averi Schmeichel and Maya VanHyfte.  VanHyfte, a freshman this season, will look make a return trip back to the state tournament.  The year the Trojans have one senior, Jenna Schoeneman.

“The girls have been working hard since the beginning of November to get ready for our first meet,” said Smith.  The first meet will be in Vermillion on Saturday, December 4th.

Trojan and Mustang Volleyball Seasons End in Region 3A Tournament

Both the West Central Trojan and Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball seasons came to an end in the opening round of the Region 3A Tournament.

The Trojans entered the tournament as the #7 seed and traveled to Garretson to play the #2 seed Blue Dragons.  The match was held on Monday, November 1st.  Gararetson won in straight sets by scores of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-18.  West Central’s season ends with an overall record of 7-19.

Tri-Valley was the #8 seed in the tournament and played #1 Sioux Falls Christian in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, November 2nd.  The Chargers also won in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-9, and 25-10.  The Mustangs finished the season with a record of 1-23.

No stats were available for either match at the time of writing.

West Central Edged by Quarriers in Playoffs

TFor the third straight year, the Dell Rapids Quarriers and West Central Trojans played one another in the opening round of the 11A playoffs.  The Trojans had won the last two meetings, but the Quarriers won this battle 19-15 at home on Thursday, October 28th.

Dell Rapids got on the board first with a touchdown on their opening drive.  They had 15-play, 80-yard drive that lasted 7:28.  Austin Henry threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Braden Fersdahl to give the Quarriers a 6-0 lead.  That was the only score of the half, and Dell Rapids led 6-0 at halftime.

After forcing Dell Rapids into a punt just 1:30 into the third quarter, West Central had a three-play, 33-yard drive that took only 1:03 for the tying score.  Gavin Koch threw a 40-yard pass to Mason Berens with 9:24 to go in the third quarter.  The extra point was good to give the Trojans a 7-6 lead.  The score remained 7-6 in favor of West Central heading into the final quarter.

Dell Rapids got the lead back with 6:48 to go in the game on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Henry to Brayden Pankonen.  The two-point conversion failed, but Dell Rapids led 12-7.  The Trojans responded with a score just a minute and 28 seconds later when Koch found Owen Heath for a 33-yard touchdown pass.  The two-point conversion pass from Koch to Logan Maras was good to give West Central a 15-12 lead.

The Quarriers would put together one more drive.  Dell Rapids went 65 yards in six plays.  Henry threw his second touchdown pass to Fersdahl, this time from eight yards away with 1:52 to go in the game.  Aiden Boechler made the extra point to make the score 19-15 in favor of Dell Rapids.  West Central got the ball to the Dell Rapids 37-yard line, but a holding penalty sent them back to midfield.  The Trojans had four chances from there to score, but turned the ball over on downs with just five seconds left in the game.

The Trojans had 219 yards of total offense, 185 passing yards and 34 rushing yards.  The Quarriers finished with 230 yards of offense, 146 passing yards and 84 rushing yards.  West Central finished with 11 first downs and were also 4-12 on third down conversions.  Dell Rapids had a total of 13 first downs and were 4-12 on third down conversions.

Koch was 14-26 for 185 yards and two touchdowns.  Braden Diericks had six catches for 57 yards.  Heath had three catches for 64 yards and a touchdown.  Berens had a catch for 40 yards for a touchdown.  Jacob Krempges had three receptions for 14 yards.  Koch had six carries for 10 yards.  Berens finished with 10 rushes for nine yards.  Heath also had a carry for nine yards.  Logan Maras had a game-high 12 tackles.  Dylan Stromer finished with seven tackles.  Tommy Berg had six tackles, and Zach Madsen and Caden Hall both had five tackles.  Hall also had an interception.

West Central finishes the 2021 season with a 4-6 overall record.

West Central Volleyball Regular Season Comes to an End

The West Central Trojan volleyball team played their final regular season match on the road at Parker on Tuesday, October 26th.  The Pheasants defeated the Trojans in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-18.

Kaia Gabbert had three ace serves and a block.  Hanna Lee led the team with 19 set assists.  Jazelle Jarding finished with five kills and one block, and Jocelyn Nilson added 12 digs.

The Trojans finish the regular season with a record of 7-18.  West Central will begin Region 3A tournament play on Tuesday, November 2nd.

Trojans Fall in Final Home Match of Season

The West Central Trojans held their final home volleyball match of the season on Monday, October 25th.  The Trojans hosted the Tri-Valley Mustangs.  The Mustangs won the match in four sets by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 19-25, and 25-21.

McKenna Sichmeller had three aces.  Grace harden finished with eight kills and two blocks.  Jazelle Jarding also had two blocks in the match.  Hanna Lee added 26 set assists, and Jenna Lueth had six digs.

West Central will finish the regular season at Parker on Tuesday, October 26th.

State Meet Ends Season for West Central Cross Country

The West Central Trojan cross country team had their final race of the season at the 2021 South Dakota Class A State Cross Country Meet at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls on Saturday, October 23rd.

Aubrey Borns placed 49th with a time of 21:01.85.  Maelee Krempges had a 67th place finish with a time of 21:27.30.

Benjamin Strunk had a top 20 finish. Strunk placed 19th with a tim eof 17:21.96.  Jacob Peterson was 43rd with a time of 18:07.42.  Jonathon Roth had a 62nd place finish with a time of 18:36.16.

Tea Pulls Away from Trojans in Second Half

The West Central Trojans had a couple of early leads against the Tea Area Titans on Thursday, October 21st, but the Titans were able to pull away in the third quarter for a 27-13 victory in the final regular season game.

West Central scored first when Gavin Koch threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Owen Heath with 8:48 in the opening quarter.  The extra point was no good, but the Trojans led 6-0.  Tea took the lead about three minutes later after a three-yard touchdown pass and extra point.  The Titans added to that lead as time expired in the first quarter on a 35-yards field goal, and Tea led 10-6 after the first quarter.

The Trojans regained the lead midway through the second quarter.  Koch had a 44-yard touchdown pass to Gage Nelson.  Tommy Berg made the extra point, and West Central led 13-10 with 6:12 to go in the half.  The Titans scored almost three minutes later again on an 18-yard pass.  Tea lead 17-13 at halftime.

Tea Area then pulled away with 10 points in the third quarter.  Chase Van Tol had a 51-yard field goal with 6:31 to  play in the third quarter.  Cael Lundin added a 56-yard touchdown pass to Klayton Slatter with 4:13 to play in the quarter.  The extra point made it 27-13, and that was the final score of the game.

The Trojans finished with 198 yards of offense, 215 passing yards but -17 rushing yards.  Justin Zirpel had 14 carries for 17 yards.  Koch was 14-23 passing for 215 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.  Braden Dierickx had eight catches for 124 yards.  Jacob Krempges had three catches for 10 yards, Heath had two catches for 37 yards and a touchdown, and Nelson had a 44-yard touchdown catch.  Chet Carda had 13 tackles and a sack in the game.  Dalton Mulder and Logan Maras both had 10 tackles.  Dierickx finished with six tackles.

West Central finishes the regular season with a 4-5 record and will be the #5 seed in the 11A playoffs.  The Trojans will travel to Dell Rapids to take on the #4 seeded Quarriers on Thursday, October 28th.

Trojans Fall to #3 Blue Dragons

The West Central Trojans traveled to Garretson to play the #3 Blue Dragons on Tuesday, October 19th.  Garretson won in straight sets by scores of 25-9, 25-15, and 25-19.

Hanna Lee had a team-high 15 assists and also had two blocks.  Grace Harden finished with five kills.  McKenna Sichmeller added two blocks and an ace serve.

The Trojans also played in the Dak-12 Conference Tournament in Tea on Saturday, October 16th.  West Central played Lennox, Tri-Valley, and Vermillion finishing 1-2 in those games.

Lennox won in straight sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-19.  The Trojans bounced back with a win over the Mustangs by scores of 25-13 and 25-22.  Vermillion then defeated West Central by scores of 26-24 and 25-18.

The Trojans will end their regular season with two matches next week.  They will host Tri-Valley on Monday, October 25th and then travel to Parker on Tuesday, October 26th.

Trojan Girls Soccer Wins Back-to-Back Titles

The West Central Trojan girls soccer team won their second straight South Dakota Class A State title, and fifth in the last six years, on Saturday, October 16th.  The Trojans defeated the Dakota Valley Panthers 2-1 at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

The Trojans entered the state tournament as the #1 seed.  They hosted a semifinal match against Sioux Falls Christian on Saturday, October 9th.  The Trojans defeated the Changers 1-0 to advance to the title match.

Rylee Haldeman scored the first goal just under five minutes into the match.  The score remained 1-0 in favor of West Central at halftime.  Dakota Valley got the tying goal with 12:54 left in the second half when Emma Deacon scored on a penalty kick.

About seven minutes later at the 5:31 mark of the second half, Haldeman got the game-winning goal for the Trojans on a penalty kick. 

Haldeman, Cambell Fischer, and Lily Sidel were all named to the 2021 South Dakota High School Soccer Coaches Association Class A All-State Soccer Team. 

West Central finished their season with an overall record of 13-1-1.
