West Central Gets Walk-off Win over Tri-Valley

West Central scored three runs in the final two innings to get a come-from-behind walk-off win over Tri-Valley on Monday, May 16th in Humboldt.

Neither team scored through the first three innings of play.  Tri-Valley scored both of their runs in the top of the fourth inning.  With two outs in the inning, Carter Sorenson hit a two-run double scoring Nathan Madison and Connor Christensen.

West Central cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth inning when Zach Madsen hit an RBI double scoring Grafton Stroup.  The score remained 2-1 heading into the seventh inning.  After Tri-Valley failed to add any more runs in their half of the seventh, West Central put together a one-out rally.  Ben Sebert reached on an error.  Gavin Koch followed with a single.  Camden McDonald hit a double that scored Sebert to tie the game.  Duece Sherrard drove home Koch with a single to center field to win the game.

Sorenson had two hits, one a double, with two RBIs for Tri-Valley.  Riley Carlson had two singles.  Christensen and Madison also each had a single in the game.  Kaden Egger pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out six.

For the West Central Trojans, McDonald had two hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Sherrard also had two hits and an RBI.  Madsen had a double and an RBI.  Jack Linneman and Koch each had a single as well.

Gamecocks and Wood Ducks Play in Series of Games

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks and Humboldt/Hartford Wood Ducks amateur baseball teams played three games each Friday, May 13th through Sunday, May 15th.

The Gamecocks finished the weekend going 2-1 in their three games.  In their game on May 13th, the Gamecocks defeated the Renner Rangers.  The Gamecocks had a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning and went on to defeated Renner 12-2.  On Saturday the Gamecocks hosted the Garretson Blue Jays with the Blue Jays getting the 6-3 win.  The weekend finished with the start of the Cornbelt League season.  The Gamecocks hosted the Madison Broncos and kicked of the league season with an 11-4 victory.

The Wood Ducks finished their weekend 0-3 in their three games.  On Friday the Wood Ducks hosted the LCW (Lennox-Chancellor-Worthing) Dirt Devils.  The Dirt Devils took the win 5-1 in that game.  Saturday’s game for the Wood Ducks was against the Winner/Colome Pheasants.  The Pheasants took a 14-1 win over the Wood Ducks.  The final game of the weekend was also the start of the Cornbelt League season.  The Wood Ducks fell to Dell Rapids PBR 5-2.

Both teams are back in action on Thursday, May 19th in Cornbelt League play.  The Wood Ducks will host the Colman A’s while the Gamecocks travel to Dell Rapids to play the Mudcats.

West Central Baseball Wins Fourth Straight

West Central won their fourth straight game after a 7-3 win over Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, May 10th.

West Central took an early four run lead after the first two innings.  Caden Alfson drove home two runs in the first inning with a single.  Logan Maras had a solo home run, and Grafton Stroup added an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.

Sioux Falls Christian got a run in the top of the third inning and then added two more in the top of the fourth inning to pull within a run, 4-3.  The score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the sixth.  Duece Sherrard had a two-run triple, and Stroup followed with an RBI triple to put West Central ahead 7-3.

Sherrard had three hits, including the triple, and two RBIs.  Stroup had two hits, one a triple, and two RBIs.  Alfson also had two hits and two RBIs.  Maras finished with a home run and an RBI, and Gavin Koch had a single.  Andrew Zimmer pitched all seven innings allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out six.

West Central Girls Golf Sixth at Home Invite

The West Central Trojan girls golf team hosted the West Central Invite on Monday, May 9th. The Trojans finished sixth with a team score of 396.

Kaylee Olson tied for 16th individually with a round of 95. Dakotah Larson had a round of 97. Lyric Riepma had a 101. Blaire Eberhard finished one stroke behind at 102. Morgyn Driscoll had a round of 115, and Lauren Prchal had a 139.

Trojan Boys Win, Girls 9th at Quarrier Track Invite

The West Central Trojan boys track team took home the team title from the Quarrier Invitational on Monday, May 9th.  The boys team finished with 115 points.  The girls team finished ninth with a total of 28 points.

Aubrey Borns placed third in the 1600m run.  Peyton Meadors also placed third in the triple jump.  The 4x800m relay team of Cambree Ideker, Jazelle Jarding, Ellie McDonald, and Clara Nelson finished third.  Borns also had a fourth place finish in the 800m run.

Layton Johnson placed first in the 200m dash.  Benjamin Strunk won the 3200m run.  Gunnar Cuka had a pair of wins.  Cuka took first in the long jump and triple jump.  Carter Schmeichel was second in the 200m dash.  Jude Jarding was second in the 400m dash.  Liam Schmeichel placed second in the 110m hurdles.  Dylan Stromer and Cuka tied for second in the high jump.

West Central Track Has Six Events Place at Howard Wood Dakota Relays

The West Central Trojan track team had six relays place at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls on Friday, May 6th and Saturday, May 7th.  The Trojans had several athletes competing in the two-day event.

The girls 4x200m relay team of Emma Goehring, Lily Sidel, Molli Thornton, and Sadie Berg placed third with a time of 1:47.14.  The 4x100m relay team of Thornton, Sidel, Rylee Haldeman, and Goehring placed fourth in a time of :51.87.  The 4x400m relay team of Alexa Borns, Thornton, Peyton Meadors, and Melissa Anderson finished seventh in 4:22.06.

The boys 4x200m relay team of Carter Schmeichel, Mason Berens, Wyatt Nielsen, and Layton Johnson placed second in 1:32.12.  The 4x400m relay team of Nielsen, Schmeichel, Jude Jarding, and Johnson was third in 3:37.37.  The 4x100m relay team of Justin Zirpel, Johnson, Braden Dierickx, and Berens finished fourth in :45.52.

Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks Win 2022 Season Opener

The Humboldt/Hartford Gamecocks hosted the Corsica/Stickney Horned Frogs to open their 2022 amateur season on Friday, May 6th.  The Gamecocks scored seven runs in the first three innings on their way to a 10-5 victory over the Horned Frogs.

Joe Hanisch put the Gamecocks on the board with an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.  Brandon McKnight followed with a two-run double to give Humboldt/Hartford a 3-0 lead.  The Gamecocks added two more runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Luke Wodahl. 

Corsica/Stickney got a lone run in the top of the third, but the Gamecocks scored two more in the bottom of the third.  Zach Treiber had an RBI sacrifice fly, and McKnight scored on a wild pitch.  The Gamecocks led 7-1 after three innings.

After the Horned Frogs scored a run in the top of the fourth, the score remained 7-2 until the seventh inning.  Corsica/Stickney added another run in their half of the seventh.  The Gamecocks answered with an RBI groundout by Wodahl in the bottom of the inning.  The Horned Frogs then scored two times in the top of the eight, but again, Humboldt/Hartford responded with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run single by Broc Haldeman.  The Horned Frogs were scoreless in the ninth inning.

McKnight had two hits, one a double, and two RBIs.  Haldeman had two singles and two RBIs.  Hanisch had two hits as well, one a double, and an RBI.  Wodahl finished with a hit and three RBIs.  Chad Morrison, Adam Hentges, Seth Cavanaugh, and Clayton Hanisch all had hits.  Treiber had an RBI.

Micah Warrington pitched three innings allowing an unearned run on two hits.  Cole Barthel also pitched three innings allowing an unearned run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  McKnight pitched an inning giving up an earned run on a hit and two walks with two strikeouts.  Treiber pitched two innings allowing two unearned runs on a hit and three walks with three strikeouts.

West Central Baseball Wins Third Straight

The West Central High School baseball team won their third game in a row with an 11-2 victory over Baltic on Wednesday, May 4th in Baltic.

West Central scored the first nine runs of the game.  The first two game in the top of the first inning.  Caden Alfson and Andrew Zimmer both had RBI singles.  Three more runs scored in the top of the third.  Two of those came on a two-run home run by Zach Madsen.  Gavin Koch walked with the bases loaded to give West Central a 7-0 lead.

Four more runs were scored in the top of the fifth for the Trojans.  Duece Sherrard had an RBI single.  Grafton Stroup followed with an RBI single.  Alfson added an RBI single with two outs in the inning, and Jack Linneman reached on an error which scored the fourth run of the inning.

Baltic was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning.  They added another run in the bottom of the sixth.  West Central scored two more times in the game as well, getting single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Stroup finished with three hits, one a double, and an RBI.  Alfson collected two hits and two RBIs.  Sherrard had two hits and an RBI.  Madsen finished with a home run and two RBIs.  Zimmer had a hit and an RBI.  Linneman had two hits, and Logan Maras and Ben Sebert both had a hit.  Koch added an RBI.

Braden Herr pitched six innings allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts.  Stroup pitched an inning allowing a hit and a walk.

West Central Girls Golf 8th in Dell Rapids

The West Central Trojan girls golf team traveled to Rocky Run Golf Course in Dell Rapids for the Dell Rapids Invite on Tuesday, May 3rd.  The Trojans finished eighth out of 13 teams with team score of 413.

Lyric Riepma finished fifth individually with a round of 88.  Kaylee Olson had a 103.  Blaire Eberhard and Lauren Prchal both finished with rounds of 111.  Dakotah Johnson had a 115, and Morgyn Driscoll finished with 116.

The Trojans will host a triangular with Madison and Sioux Falls O’Gorman and then will host the West Central Invitational on Monday, May 9th.

West Central Girls and Boys 2nd at Beresford Lions Club Track Meet

The West Central Trojan track teams traveled to Beresford for the Beresford Lions Club Meet on Tuesday, May 3rd.  The girls team finished second with a team score of 134.  Canton won the girls title with 149 points.  The West Central boys team also finished second with 150.5 points.  Brandon Valley won the boys title with 166 points.

Molli Thornton won the 200m dash and the long jump.  Alexa Borns took first in the 400m dash.  The 4x200m relay team of Thornton, Lily Sidel, Emma Goehring, and Sadie Berg also placed first.  Aubrey Borns took second in the 1600m and 3200m runs.  The 4x100m relay team of Thornton, Sidel, Rylee Haldeman, and Goehring also finished second.

Gunnar Cuka placed first in the long jump and triple jump and also finishes second in the high jump.   Four relay teams also took first for West Central.  The 4x100m relay (Justin Zirpel, Tommy Berg, Braden Dierickx, Mason Berens), the 4x200m relay (Berens, Wyatt Nielsen, Berg, Layton Johnson), the 4x400m relay (Nielsen, Carter Schmeichel, Jude Jarding, Johnson), and the sprint medley relay (Zirpel, Berens, Johnson, Jarding) all took the top spot.
