Mustang Golf Places 3rd at Regions, Team Qualifies for State

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys golf team placed third overall at the Region 1A golf tournament, thus qualifying the whole team for the 2020 Class A State Golf Tournament.  This is the first time in school history that the entire team has qualified for the state tournament.

The Region 1A tournament was held at Dakota Winds Golf Course on Monday, September 29th.

Tri-Valley finished with with a team score of 375.  Aberdeen Roncalli placed fist wtih a score of 348, and Madison was second with a score of 366.

Josh Leiseth placed fourth with a round of 83.  Braden Miller was seventh after a round of 88.  Lance DeWitt finished 25th individually with a round of 100.  Riley Carlson had a 104, and Cole Foken finished with a 115.

“Being the first team in school history to qualify as a team is pretty amazing,” said head coach Brandon DeWitt.

The Mustangs will head west for the state tournament.  State will be held Monday, October 5th and Tuesday, October 6th at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs.

Tri-Valley Falls to Strong Quarrier Defense

The Tri-Valley Mustang football team played their first road game of the season on Friday, September 25th.  They traveled to Dell Rapids to take on the Quarriers.  The Quarrier defense was too much as Dell Rapids won the game 20-0.

The Mustangs kept the game within a score for three quarter after Dell Rapids scored with 7:58 to play in the first quarter.  The Quarriers led 7-0 at halftime, and the score remained 7-0 after three quarters of play.  Dell Rapids then scored with 11:25 to play in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 13-0.  Dell Rapids then capitalized on a fumble recovery and scored again with 8:58 to play to push the lead to 20-0.

Tri-Valley just couldn’t get any offensive rhythm going in the game.  The Mustangs longest drive of the game lasted just six plays, and that drive happened late in the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs were held to just 39  total yards of offense, 27 rushing yards and 12 passing yards.  They had a total of just three first downs and turned the ball over two times.

Mason Mathieu was 3-5 passing for 12 yards.  Nick Haas had a catch for seven yards, and Bryce Kienast had a catch for six yards.  Levi Hanson led the ground attack with eight carries for 20 yards.  Jaden Siemonsma had eight carries for 16 yards.  Tyson Van Der Vliet and Isaac McFarland both had seven tackles each.  Siemonsma, Mathieu, Owen Snethen, and Connor Christensen all had five tackles each.  Colt Blake had three sacks in the game.

Tri-Valley (1-3) will host Sioux Falls Christian on Friday, October 2nd.

Madison Ends Tri-Valley Win Streak

In a battle of Dak-12 opponents, the Madison Bulldogs snapped a five-match winning streak by the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Thursday, September 25th, in Madison.  The Bulldogs took the match in four sets.

Madison won the first two matches by scores of 25-18 and 25-16.  The Mustangs battled back in the third set with a 26-16 win.  The Bulldogs, however, rallied through the fourth set and won 25-15 to win the match.

Jessica Masgai led the Mustangs with seven kills.  Abbie Weinacht had six kills.  Masgai also had a team-high two blocks.  Weinacht led the team with four ace serves.  Blayne Gacke had 18 digs, while Grace Schildhauer had 10.  Schildhauer also had 13 set assists.  Brookelyn Stieben added eight set assists.

Tri-Valley (5-3) will be back at home on Monday, September 28th, when they host the Baltic Bulldogs.

Peters and Hargreaves Each Finish Fourth

Brie Peters and Nate Hargreaves once again had another great cross country race for the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Wednesday, September 23rd.  They participated in the Dell Rapids Cross Country Invite.

Peters and Hargreaves both finished fourth individually in their races.  Peters finished in a time of 21:17.50.  Hargreaves finished with a time of 18:24.85.

The next event will be the Lennox Invitational on Thursday, October 1st.

Tri-Valley Wins Fifth Straight Match

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team extended their winning streak to five after a four-set match win over the Canton C-Hawks in Canton on Tuesday, September 22nd.

After dropping the first set by a score of 25-19, the Mustangs rallied to win the next three by scores of 25-17, 25-13, and 25-22 to earn the match win.

Jessica Masgai had a team-high nine kills, along with four ace serves, and two blocks.  Blayne Gacke finished with seven kills, five ace serves, and 10 digs.  Abbie Weinacht had three blocks.  Grace Schildhauer also had 10 digs on the night.

Tri-Valley (5-2) will look to keep the winning streak going against the Madison Bulldogs in Madison on Thursday, September 24th.

Tri-Valley Golf Results from Dak-12 Tourney

The Tri-Valley Mustangs boys golf team played in the Dak-12 Conference Tournament on Monday, September 21st at Rocky Run Golf Course in Dell Rapids.

The Mustangs had a seventh place finish as a team with a score of 358.  Tea won the conference title with a team score of 320.  Lennox was second at 333, and Sioux Falls Christian placed third at 338.

Josh Leiseth placed eighth individually with a round of 82.  Riley Carlson had an 89 for the day.  Braeden MIller finished with a 93.  Mayson Rise was one shot behind at 94.  Cole Focken had a 95, and Lance DeWitt had a round of 102.

Tri-Valley will play in the Region 1A tournament at Dakota Winds Golf Course on Monday, September 28th.

Trojans Tame the Mustangs

The West Central Trojans got back into the win column with a 25-8 victory over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Friday, September 18th.  The Mustangs were playing in their third straight home game of the year, while West Central won for the first time since week one.

The Trojans finished the game with 159 yards of total offense, 134 rushing yards and 25 passing yards.  Justin Zirpel had 21 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns.  Zirpel also provided a big defensive play for West Central.  He had a fumble recovery return for a 55-yard touchdown.  Isaiah Colon and Braden Dierickx both had an interception.

The Mustangs, meanwhile, had 218 yards of total offense, 176 of those rushing yards.  Jaden Siemonsma had 12 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.  Mason Mathieu had 11 carries for 51 yards.  Mathieu was also 6-10 passing for 42 yards with two interceptions.  Siemonsma had two catches 14 yards, and Owen Besmer had two catches for 19 yards.

West Central head coach Vincent Benedetto said, “Anytime you win, it is a big deal. We played well enough to win tonight and get back on track. Our kids’ goals are high, and they know there is a lot to improve on in order to achieve our goals. The most positive thing from tonight is our players made plays when we needed them.”

West Central (2-2) will host the Dakota Valley Panthers on Friday, September 28th.  Tri-Valley (1-2) will play in their first road game of the season when they travel to Dell Rapids on Friday, September 25th.

Mustangs Win Fourth Straight Volleyball Match

The Tri-Valley Mustangs won their fourth straight volleyball match after a straight set win in Dell Rapids against the Quarriers on Thursday, September 17th.  The Mustangs won by scores of 25-21, 25-16, and 25-22.

The Mustangs and Quarriers stayed within two or three points most of the first set.  Both teams had small leads through the early and middle portions of the set.  The two teams were tied at 13-13, 17-17 and 19-19 before Tri-Valley closed out the set on a 6-2 run for the win.

The second started the same as the first one.  The score was tied at 5-5 before Tri-Valley went on a four-point run to take a 9-5 lead.  Dell Rapids responded with five straight points of their own for a 10-9 lead.  Tri-Valley broke a 13-13 tie and went on a 12-3 run to take a two set advantage over the Quarriers.

Set three was also close at the start.  The score was tied 5-5, but this time the Mustangs made a big run early.  Tri-Valley went on a 14-3 run to take a 19-8 lead.  Dell Rapids made a late run and pulled within three points at 23-20, but the Mustangs were able to hold off the Quarrier rally and take the set 25-21 to win the match.

Jessica Masgai had six kills to lead the team.  Blayne Gacke had five kills and Abbie Weinacht finished with four kills.  Masgai also led the team with a block and six ace serves.  Kaitlyn Mohnen had seven digs, while Gacke had six digs.  Abbie Weinacht added five ace serves.  Grace Schildhauer had 10 set assists.

Tri-Valley (4-2) will travel to Canton on Tuesday, September 22nd.

Tri-Valley Boys Golf Plays in Vermillion

The Tri-Valley Mustang boys golf team made the trip to Vermillion for the rescheduled Vermillion Invitational on Wednesday, September 16th.

The Mustangs finished 11th as a team with a score of 389.  Vermillion won the team title with a team score of 326.  Sioux Falls Christian was second with a 337, and Lennox was third with 341.

Braeden Miller finished the day with a round of 92.  Josh Leiseth had a round of 95.  Riley Carlson finished with a 100.  Lance Dewitt had a 102.  Mayson Rise finished with a 106, and Cole Focken had a round of 112.

Tri-Valley’s next tournament will be the Dak-12 Conference Tournament held in Dell Rapids on Monday, September 21st.

Peters and Hargreaves Have Another Strong Meet

Brie Peters and Nate Hargreaves continue to have a solid season for the Tri-Valley Mustang varsity cross country team.  The two ran at the Sioux Falls Charger Invitational on Tuesday, September 15th.

Peters had another top 10 finish by placing 8th with a time of 21:37.28.  Hargreaves had his second fastest time of the year and placed 17th with a time of 18:41.49.

The next cross country meet will be in Dell Rapids on Wednesday, September 23rd.
