Mustang Volleyball Season Ends in Regions

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team had their 2020 season end in the Region 3A tournament on Thursday, November 5th.  The Mustangs fell to the #1 seed Sioux Falls Christian Chargers in straight sets.

The Mustangs played the Chargers close early in the opening set.  Sioux Falls Christian only led by two points at 9-7, but the Chargers then went on an 8-1 run for a 17-8 lead.  Sioux Falls Christian ended the first set with a 25-17 victory.

Sioux Falls Christian got out to a quick 8-3 lead in the second set.  They carried that momentum all the way to a 25-11 win for a 2-0 set lead.  The Mustangs found themselves trailing by eight points at 14-5 early in the third set.  Tri-Valley went on a 6-1 run to pull within four points at 15-11, but the rally fell short as the Chargers took the set 25-16 to win the match.

Tri-Valley finishes with an overall season record of 11-11.

Tri-Valley Advances in Region 3A after 3rd Win over West Central

The Tri-Valley Mustangs and West Central Trojans met for the third time this season on Tuesday, November 3rd at Tri-Valley High School.  This meeting was in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament, and all three meetings have occurred in the last 17 days with the Mustangs winning the first two.

Tri-Valley got out to a quick 5-1 lead in the opening set of the match.  The Mustangs maintained a two-to-three point lead before extending it to 15-9 midway through the set.  The lead grew to 10 points at 23-13, and Tri-Valley took the first set 25-13.

The momentum carried into the second set as the Mustangs scored the first six points for a 6-0 lead.  West Central pulled within three points early in the set, but the Mustangs never lost the lead and eventually won in the second set 25-17 for a 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs once again grabbed an early lead in the third set at 6-2.  West Central, however, was able to get the set tied at 12-12.  The set was within a point for much of the remainder of the game.  With the score tied 20-20, the Trojans finished the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-21 and force a fourth set.

The fourth set started close as both teams were tied 4-4.  The Mustangs then went on a 7-1 run for an 11-5 lead.  That run gave all the momentum to Tri-Valley.  The lead grew to 19-9, and the Mustangs won the set 25-15 to win the match.

West Central was led by Cassidy Siemonsma with 11 kills and four blocks.  Jenna Lueth had 14 digs, and Jocelyn Nilson added 10 digs.  Rachel Bucher had three ace serves.  Alaina Murphy added three blocks, and Brooke Opitz finished with 17 set assists.

Kaitlyn Mohnen had 15 digs and 10 kills for the Mustangs.  Blayne Gacke had 13 digs, nine kills, and seven ace serves.  Jessica Masgain had three blocks and two ace serves.  Grace Shildhauer added 20 set assists in the match.

The Trojans end their season with an overall record of 6-15.

Tri-Valley moves on to the next round of the Region 3A tournament.  They will plat at #1 Sioux Falls Christian in a SoDak16 Qualifier match on Thursday, November 5th at 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs Beat Trojans for Second Time this Season

Playing against each other for the second time in less than 10 days, the Tri-Valley Mustang and the West Central Trojan volleyball teams clashed on Monday, October 26th at Tri-Valley High School.

The Mustangs took the match in straight sets again, this time by scores of 25-18, 27-25, and 25-15.

Tri-Valley got things rolling early as they jumped out to a 7-3 lead.  The lead quickly grew to eight at 13-5.  The Trojans battled to within two points at 17-15.  The Mustangs responded to push the lead back to five points at 22-17 and eventually winning the set 25-18.

The Mustangs again got to an early lead in the second set.  Tri-Valley led 11-5.  West Central then went on a 12-1 run to take a 17-12 lead.  Tri-Valley pulled within a point a couple of times, but West Central was able to keep the lead and held a 23-20 advantage.  The Trojans were at set point at 24-22, but Tri-Valley tied the score at 24-24.  West Central got the next point for a 25-24 lead to force set point again.  Tri-Valley then scored the next three points to get the come-from-behind 27-25 win.

The momentum of that win propelled Tri-Valley to another early lead at 10-5.  West Central scored four in a row to pull within a point at 10-9.  The Trojans tied the set at 11-11.  The Mustangs then scored the next five points for a 16-11 lead.  Tri-Valley then closed out the set on a 9-4 run for the 25-15 win.

The Trojans were led by Brooke Opitz with 23 set assists, 10 digs, three blocks, and two ace serves.  Cassidy Siemonsma had nine kills and five blocks.  Jenna Lueth finished with 14 digs.  Grace Harden had five kills.

Blayne Gacke had 13 digs, six kills, and five ace serves for the Mustangs.  Kaitlyn Mohnen had 13 digs, eight kills and six blocks.  Hannah West also finished with 13 digs.  Tabor Teel had nine blocks.  Grace Schildhauer had a team-high 18 set assists, and Brookelyn Stieben had eight set assists.

This was the final regular season match for the Mustangs.  Tri-Valley finishes their regular season with a record of 9-10.  West Central will finish their regular season at home on Tuesday, October 27th against Parker.

The two teams look to be headed for another match against one another in the opening round of the Region 3A tournament.

Mustang Football Season Ends at Dakota Valley

The Tri-Valley Mustang football team had their 2020 season come to an end on the road at Dakota Valley High School on Thursday, October 22nd.  The Panthers defeated the Mustangs 31-6.

The Mustangs finished the game with a total of 207 yards of offense, 185 of those yards on the ground.  Dakota Valley had a total of 303 yards of offense, 249 rushing yards and 54 passing yards.

Owen Besmer had 12 carries for 44 yards and a touchdown.  Jaden Siemonsma had four carries for 55 yards.  Levi Hanson had seven carries for 40 yards, and Porter Jensen had seven carries for 35 yards.  Besmer was also 2-6 passing for 22 yards.  Hansen had a catch for 21 yards.

Tri-Valley finished their season with a record of 2-6.

Trojan and Mustang Cross Country Teams End Season at State Meet

The conditions for 2020 South Dakota Class A Cross Country meet were anything but ideal.  The runners had to battle bitter cold temperatures and snow in Rapid City on Saturday, October 24th.

The West Central Trojan cross country team had four members that ran in the state meet, while the Tri-Valley Mustang team had two running in the event.

For Tri-Valley, Nate Hargreaves placed 21st with a time of 18:01.46.  Brie Peters had a 48th place finish with a time of 21:32.41.

Abbie Cain and Regan Stallman finished back-to-back for the Trojans in the girls race.  Cain was 82nd in a time of 22:37.39, and Stallman placed 83rd with a time of 22:43.91.  Justin Schumacher and Ben Strunk also finished back-to-back in the boys reace.  Schumacher was 73rd in 19:17.79, and Strunk was 74th with a time of 19:19.14.

Mustangs Drop Five-Set Match to Titans

The Tri-Valley Mustang volleyball team hosted one of their final home matches of the season on Tuesday, October 20th.  The Mustangs entertained Mt. Vernon/Plankinton and lost a five-set match to the Titans.

The first set was back-and-forth early.  Tri-Valley held a slim 7-6 lead before extending the lead to 11-7.  The Titans were able to eventually tie the set at 16-16.  Mt. Vernon/Plankinton then went on a 6-2 run for a 22-16 lead.  The Titans took the first set 25-18.

The Mustangs held an early lead in the second set at 6-3.  The Titans went on a 7-1 run to take a 10-7 lead.  Tri-Valley rebounded and tied the set at 11-11 and then take a 16-13 lead.  The set was tied again at 20-20.  The Mustangs finished the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-21 and tie the match at one set apiece.

The third set started the same as the first with neither team getting much of an advantage.  The Mustangs started to make a run midway through the set.  With the score tied 11-11, Tri-Valley scored four in a row for a 15-11 lead.  The Mustangs extended the lead to 19-13 and went on to take the third set by a score of 25-17.

Trailing two sets to one, the Titans came out on fire in the fourth set.  Mt. Vernon/Plankinton jumped out to an 9-2 lead.  The Titans were able to maintain a sizeable lead throughout most of the set and led 23-13.  The Mustangs scored six in a row and pulled within four points at 23-19.  The Titans, however, ended the rally and won 25-19 to force a fifth and final set.

The fifth set was once again close to start.  The two teams were tied 4-4 when the Titans made a run for an 8-5 lead.  The lead extended to 11-6 for Mt. Vernon/Plankinton.   Tri-Valley pulled within three at 11-8, but the Titans closed out the match on a 4-0 run to win the set 15-8 and take the match.

Tri-Valley (8-9) will travel to Tea on Friday, October 23rd and then host the West Central Trojans on Monday, October 26th to finish the regular season.

Mustangs Win Dak-12 Clash over West Central

The Tri-Valley Mustangs earned a straight-set match win over the West Central Trojans at the Dak-12 Conference tournament on Saturday, October 17th.  The conference tournament format changed with a few teams unable to play.  Instead of a bracketed tournament, there were just four single matches scheduled.

The first set of the match featured a couple of runs by each team.  With the score tied 3-3 early, the Mustangs went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-3 lead.  Tri-Valley led 10-6 before the Trojans went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 10-10.  Tri-Valley then went on another 4-0 for a 14-10 advantage.  The Mustangs were then able to maintain a four-point lead before extending it to 22-16.  West Central pulled within two points at 23-21, but the Mustangs ended the rally and took the set 25-21.

Tri-Valley got out to a quick start in the second set.  The Mustangs went on a 6-1 run to turn a 2-2 tie into an 8-3 lead.  The lead grew to eight points at 15-7, and Tri-Valley kept a five-to-seven point lead the remainder of the set and won the second set 25-17.

The Mustangs, again, used a run get an early lead.  West Central scored the first point of the third set, but Tri-Valley scored the next six points for a 6-1 lead.  The advantage grew to eight points at 14-6.  The lead stayed at eight points at 20-12 before West Central started to rally.   The Trojans scored six straight points to pull within two points at 20-18.   West Central got the lead down to one at 21-20, but that was as close as they could get.  Tri-Valley ended the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-21 and take the match in straight sets.

Tri-Valley (8-8) will host Mt Vernon/Plankinton on Tuesday, October 20th.  West Central (6-11) will host Garretson also on Tuesday, October 20th.

Mustangs Fall in Final Home Game of Season

The Tri-Valley Mustangs lost in their final home football game of the season on Friday, October 16th.  The Huron Tigers defeated the Mustangs 27-8.

The Mustangs finished the game with 220 yards of total offense, 136 passing yards and 84 rushing yards.  Huron, meanwhile, had 291 yards of total offense, 207 rushing yards and 84 passing yards.

Mason Mathieu finished the night 7-15 passing for 133 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.  Owen Besmer had five of those receptions for 111 yards and also had a 72-yard touchdown catch.  Jaden Siemonsma led the ground attack with nine carries for 37 yards.

The Mustangs (2-5) will finish the regular season on the road at Dakota Valley High School on Thursday, October 22nd.

Peters and Hargreaves Headed to State Cross Country Meet

The Tri-Valley Mustang cross country team will have two runners at the state meet.  Brie Peters and Nate Hargreaves qualified for the state meet by placing in the top 20 at the Region 2A meet on Thursday, October 15th at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls.

Peters finished seventh with a time of 21:02.03 to qualify for state.  Zoey Dissing placed 28th for the Mustangs with a time of 22:57.27.

Hargreaves also placed seventh with a time of 17:46.19.  Teagin Gacke finished 42nd with a time of 21:05.02.  Matthew Mares was 44th with a time of 21:08.51.  Camden Raastad had  time of 22:56.00 placing 48th.

Peters and Hargreaves will run at the 2020 South Dakota Class A Cross Country Meet on Saturday, October 24th at Hart Ranch Camping Resort in Rapid City.

Mustangs Even Record with Win at Lennox

The Tri-Valley Mustangs won their second match in a row and evened their record with a straight set win in Lennox on Monday, October 12th.

The Mustangs got rolling early and never looked back.  Tri-Valley won the first set by double digits at 25-15.  They continued to roll in the second and third sets and won them by the same score of 25-21 for the match victory.

Kaitlyn Mohnen finished with a team-high seven kills.  Tabor Teel had five kills.  Grace Schildhauer and Blayne Gacke both finished with nine digs each.  Jessica Masgai and Teel finished with three blocks apiece.  Gacke and Mohnen both had three ace serves.  Schildhauer also led the team with 22 set assists.

Tri-Valley (7-7) will travel to Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday, October 13th.
