Cardinal Volleyball 3-2 at Weekend Tournament

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team won three matches and lost two at the Elkton Tournament on Saturday, September 24th.  The Cardinals opened up the tournament with a win over Centerville, 25-21, 25-22.  Tori Michel led the team with three aces.  Danielle Fiegen had six kills in the match, while Lexie LeBrun added five.  T. Michel also led the team in set assists with eight.  Kelly Michel led the Cardinal defense with 10 digs, and Rachel Scholten had nine.  Dell Rapids St Mary dropped the second match to Alcester-Hudson, 13-25, 17-25.  In that match, T. Michel and LeBrun each had a service ace.  Fiegen had six kills, and T. Michel had five set assists.  The defense was led by K. Michel with eight digs.

The Cardinals then went on to defeat Iroquois in a three-set match, 21-25, 25-21, 25-12.  LeBrun and K. Michel each had three aces.  Fiegen had four kills in the match, and T. Michel once again led the team with six assists.  LeBrun also picked up 13 digs in the match, and K. Michel added eight.  In the fourth match of the day, Dell Rapids St Mary lost to Elkton-Lake Benton in two sets, 21-25, 17-25.  Fiegen this time led the Cardinals with three service aces.  She also led the team in kills with five in the match.  Abby Siemonsma this time led the Cardinals with five assists.  LeBrun had seven digs defensively for Dell Rapids St Mary.

The Cardinals finished their day with a two-set win over the Flandreau Indian School, 25-15, 25-8.  K. Michel and Ally Mullaney each had five aces in the match.  K. Michel also led the team in kills with three.  Siemonsma had six assists, and Kiley Reecy and Siemonsma paced the defense with seven digs apiece.  Siemonsma also had three solo blocks in the match.

Dell Rapids St Mary’s record moved to 9-9 after the tournament.  The Cardinals will host Baltic on Tuesday, September 25th in their next match.

Cardinals Beat Colman-Egan in Overtime

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals defeated the Colman-Egan Hawks 36-30 in overtime on Friday, September 21st.  The Cardinals used a running attack as they ran for 314 yards.  They added 104 passing yards for a total of 422 yards of offense.  Colman-Egan had 206 yards of rushing along with 42 passing yards for a total of 248 yards of offense.  Noel Hansen led the Cardinal offense with 27 carries for 142 yards and a touchdown.  Ben Bunkers had 19 carries for 134 yards and three touchdowns.  Wes Heinricy was 4-9 passing for 108 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.  Josh Brown had a 60-yard touchdown catch in the game, and Jared Scholten had a 10-yard touchdown catch.  Leon Maxwell led the defense with seven tackles, three sacks, and a fumble recovery.  Brown added seven tackles, one sack, and had an interception.  Heinricy had 6.5 tackles, and Bunkers had five tackles.

Head Coach Ross Flemmer said, “The kids played with a lot of heart, they continued to battle adversity and kept coming back.  Our offensive and defensive lines comprised of  Leon Maxwell, Jonah Longville and Jared Scholten, Jacob Frost, and Noah Fiegen played a great game, they opened holes for our running backs all night and they dominated the defensive line and brought pressure on Colman-Egans Quarterback.  We had a lot of kids make big plays throughout the game and they all did a great job.”

The win improves the Cardinal record to 3-1 on the year.  Dell Rapids St Mary will take on Deubrook Friday, September 28th, for homecoming at 7:00 p.m.

Tri-Valley Edges Dell Rapids

The Tri-Valley Mustangs defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers for the second year in a row, this time during the Tri-Valley homecoming, by a score of 28-21.  The Mustangs scored in every quarter and led 14-0 mid way through the second

quarter before Dell Rapids scored a touchdown on a 10-yard TD run by Matt Kolbeck to cut the lead down to 14-7 at halftime.  Dell Rapids took the kickoff to start the second half and scored on a 10-yard TD run by Riley Schmidt after a 5:00 drive to tie the game up.  Tri-Valley then scored on their first possession of the third quarter on a 2-yard TD run on fourth down by Brett Page with 0:41 left in the quarter to take the lead back at 21-14.  Cole Langer would score on a 4-yard run with 7:37 left in the game as the Quarriers tied the game up again, this time at 21-21.  With 3:11 left to play, Tri-Valley scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 4-yard pass play from Brett Page to Logan Otto to take a 28-21 lead.  The Quarriers had the ball in Mustang territory with just over 1:00 to play, but a fourth-down pass fell incomplete, and the Mustangs were able to run the clock out for the win.

Dell Rapids had 169 rushing yards and 64 passing yards for a total of 233 yards of total offense.  Tri-Valley had 170 rushing yards and 73 passing yards for a total of 243 yards of total offense.  Langer had 14 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown, and Kolbeck carried the ball 10 times for 62 yards and a touchdown.  Kolbeck was also 4-7 passing for 64 yards and an interception.  Schmidt had three catches for 46 yards.  Schmidt also had a rushing touchdown on the night.  Bryce Koch had 11.5 tackles in the game to lead the defense.  Jackson Entringer had eight tackles, and Jacob Morris added six.  For Tri-Valley, Otto had 10 carries for 74 yards. Sam Mader had 18 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown.  Page was  6-7 passing for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

The big stat of the night was Tri-Valley converting on 6 of 12 3rd down chances, while the Quarriers were only able to convert 2 of 9 chances.  Both teams converted three 4th down

chances.  The Mustangs also had the ball for 7:30 longer than Dell Rapids in the game.

The loss drops the Quarriers to 3-1 on the season.  Dell Rapids will host the Tea Area Titans for Homecoming on Friday, September 28th, and the game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Quarriers Sweep Flandreau in Volleyball Action

On Thursday, September 20th, the Dell Rapids Quarriers swept the Flandreau Fliers in all three matches of the night.  The varsity won three sets to one, by scores of 22-25, 27-25, 25-16, and 25-17.  Morgan Hoglund contributed 18 points while collecting 21 digs on defense for the Quarriers.  McKenzie Rinehart had 13 kills and 12 service points.  Cassidy Wright had eight kills and three blocks.  Margo Hegge added six kills and 13 digs defensively for Dell Rapids.  Sarah Haak added eight points and Aleza Kirshenmann led the team with 20 set assists.

“A win is always good, but how we played is more important.  I felt we had a better sustained effort on both sides of the net.  We made some adjustments that helped the cause.  It was a nice victory for the team,” added Coach Solberg, “everyone contributed which is great to see.”

The JV picked up a win two sets to none, 25-16 and 25-10.  Leaders on the night included Jordan Stone, Maria Nagelhout, Shelby Wrage and Brittnay Welbig.

The C team split their match by the set scores of 23-25, 25-16.   The third set was forfeited due to the five set playing rule. The offense was lead by Hannah Welbig and Mara Adams.  Alexa DeVos and Kiah Schumacher was credited with anchoring a stellar defensive effort.

Dells Invite Cross Country Results

Rocky Run Golf Course held the Dells Invite Cross Country meet on Wednesday, September 19th.  The Dell Rapids girls finished fourth with 72 team points.  Garretson won the girls event with 27 points, followed by Canton with 45 points for second and Sioux Falls Christian in third with 66 points.  The Dell Rapids boys finished seventh with 107 team points.  Tea Area won the boys event with 27 points.  Sioux Falls Christian finished second with 46 points, and Garretson finished third with 48 points.  No team score was posted for the Dell Rapids St Mary team.

Quarrier Golf Team Wins Conference Invite

The Dell Rapids Quarriers boys golf team won the Big Sioux Conference meeting on Monday, September 17th, at Bakker Crossing Golf Course in Sioux Falls.  The Quarriers were able to place five golfers in the top ten.  Zach Schroeder finished second with a score of 81.  Adam Karst, Ted LaCoursiere and Ty Hoglund all shot an 82 on the day.  Karst finished 3rd, LaCoursiere finished 6th, and Hoglund finished 7th.  Devon Weber was just one stroke behind at 83 to finish in 10th place.

The Quarriers next competition will be Monday, September 24th, at Regions.

Cardinal Volleyball Beats Flandreau Indian

On Tuesday, September 18th, the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals defeated the Flandreau Indian School in three straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-8 at Dell Rapids St Mary High School Gym.  The Cardinals got off to a bit of a slow start in the first set, but after the serving and offence got going midway through the first set, the Cardinals cruised for the win.  Danielle Fiegen led the team with eight kills on the night.  Kelly Michel added five, and Lexie LeBrun had four.  Abby Siemonsma had nine set assists and Tori Michel had seven for the Cardinals.  LeBrun led the defense with six digs and one block, plus LeBrun led the team with six serve aces.  K. Michel also had five serve aces.

The win moves the Cardinal record to 5-7.  Dell Rapids St Mary will travel to Colman on Thursday, September 20th, to take on Colman-Egan.

Garretson Takes Varsity Match Against Quarriers

Tuesday night, September 18th, the Dell Rapids volleyball teams traveled to Garretson and won two of the three matches.  The varsity lost 21-25, 25-17, 23-25, and 22-25.  Sarah Haak had 26 set assists.  Cassidy Wright led the offense with 13 kills while Margo Hegge and McKenzie Rinehart each added six kills.  Rinehart also had 14 service points and Morgan Hoglund added 12.  Hoglund also shined defensively with 17 digs.  The Quarriers record dips to 6-8 overall.

“We are struggling with getting our first pass to Sarah, our setter.  We simply have to keep working at getting that pass close to the net to run our offense effectively.  Until we do that, are struggles will continue.  I know that we will work hard and get it turned around.  We just have to get all the pieces working together at once”, commented Coach Solberg.

The JV and C teams came away with wins by the match scores of 2-0 each.  Kiah Schumacher, Mara Adams, Hannah Welbig, Megan Miles and Brittney Siesmonsa were credited with leading an entire team effort.  Mikaela Stofferahn, Shelby Wrage and Jordan Stone paced the JV team efforts.

Quarrier Volleyball 2-2 at Lake Preston Tournament

On Saturday, September 15th, the Quarriers traveled to play in the Lake Preston Invitational.  In the opening round, the Quarriers fell to a tough Arlington squad by the set scores of 25-11 and 25-19.  In the second match, the netters came back and posted a 25-14 and 25-17 win against the Estelline Redmen.  In their third match of the day, the Quarriers defeated DeSmet by the set scores of 25-18, 16-25 and 25-14.  Arlington ended the Quarriers day by defeating Dell Rapids a second time, 25-22 and 25-11.

Leaders on the day included Margo Hegge with 30 service points.  Cassidy Wright and Madie Vietor recorded 18 and 17 kills respectively.  Sarah Haak added 54 set assists while Morgan Hoglund came up with 42 digs.

Quarriers Cruise Past Madison

The Dell Rapids Quarriers led 20-0 at halftime and put up 26 unanswered points on their way to a 33-6 win over the Madison Bulldogs Friday, September 14th.

The Quarriers had 291 yards of rushing and 98 yards of passing for a total of 389 yards of offense.  The Quarrier defense held Madison to just 28 yards of rushing and 134 yards of passing for a total of 162 yards of offense.  Lane LeBrun led Dell Rapids with seven carries for 112 yards rushing and one touchdown.  Cole Langer had 10 carries for 84 yards and three touchdowns.  Matt Kolbeck was 5-10 passing for 98 yards and one touchdown and one interception.  Bryce Koch led the team in catches with three for 59 yards and a touchdown.  Langer had one catch for 29 yards, and Jacob Morris had a catch for 10 yards.  Langer led the defense of the Quarriers with 10 tackles on the night.  Jackson Entringer had three tackles, 2.5 assisted tackles, and 1.5 tackles for loss.  Ryan Nichols had 2.5 tackles and three assisted tackles.

The win moves the Quarrier record to 3-0 on the year.  Dell Rapids will be on the road on Friday, September 21st as they take on the Tri-Valley Mustangs.  The game will be webcasted starting at 7:00 p.m.
