2013 15-16 Teener Region 2A Tournament

Friday, August 2nd:  Humboldt 11, Dell Rapids 3

Humboldt ran off five runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to secure the Region 2A championship August 2. Dell Rapids finished second and also qualified for state.  Adam Karst held Humboldt in check for three innings but two errors and four hits allowed Humboldt to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 lead that they never relinquished.  Riley Jurgensen pitched one and two-thirds innings of relief for Dell Rapids. He gave up one run and no hits.  Ty Hoglund and Matthew Juba both had two hits. Karst, Ben Gillogly, Zach Schroeder and Ryan Geraets each had one hit.

Thursday, August 1st:  Dell Rapids 7, Madison 1

Dell Rapids earned a trip to the 15-16 State VFW Tournament with a 7-1 win over Madison.  The win also put Dell Rapids into the championship game in a re-match with Humboldt 15s.  Ty Hoglund was in complete control on the mound for Dell Rapids, as he pitched five innings only giving up one hit and striking out 10.  Hoglund was also a big factor offensively, going 2-4 with a triple and two RBIs.  Matthew Juba had a two-RBI double in the game as well.  Dell Rapids will play in the championship game Friday, August 2nd, at 6:00 p.m. in Madison.  If Dell Rapids wins, they will have to play another game against Humboldt 15s at 8:00 p.m. to determine the Region 2A champion.

 

Wednesday, July 31st:  Humboldt 15s 8, Dell Rapids 4

Humboldt qualified for the state tournament and Region 2A championship game by knocking off Dell Rapids in the semi-finals July 31.  Dell Rapids outhit Humboldt seven to four but were hurt on defense by six walks, four wild pitches and two errors.  Ben Gillogly led the offense with two hits and an RBI. Riley Schmidt drove in two runs with a single. Ty Hoglund, Adam Karst, Zach Schroeder and Joel Brust all added hits.  Schmidt took the loss for Dell Rapids. He gave up two hits, four walks and six runs in four innings. Only one run was earned. Hoglund pitched the final two innings. He gave up two runs on one hit and two walks. He struck out five Humboldt hitters.  Dell Rapids will now play in an elimination game at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 1st, against the winner of Madison vs. Chancellor.  The game will be played in Madison.

Tuesday, July 30th

Dell Rapids got started on a high note in their first game of the 15-16 Region 2A Teener tournament on Tuesday, July 30th, with a 24-8 win over SFC.  Dell Rapids scored 10 times in the first inning, added four more runs in the second, and a run in the third for a very quick 15-1 lead that they never lost.  SFC was able to score six times in the fourth, but Dell Rapids had another big inning in the fifth scoring nine more runs to end the game on the 10-run rule.  Ben Gillogly went 3-4 in the game with three RBIs and three runs scored.  Matthew Juba was 4-5 with three RBIs and four runs scored.

Dell Rapids will play Humboldt/Hartford 15s in the semi-finals on Wednesday, July 31st, at 8:00 p.m. in Madison.

South Dakota State VFW 13-14 Teener Class A Baseball Tournament

The pairings for the 2013 South Dakota State VFW 13-14 Teener Class A tournament has been set.  The tournament will take place in Vermillion at Prentis Park Friday, July 26th, through Sunday, July 28th.  Dell Rapids 14s will play Parkston in the opening round on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Friday, July 26th

  • Game 1:  Madison 4, Tabor 1
  • Game 2:  Harrisburg vs Dakota Valley – 2:30 p.m.
  • Game 3:  Dell Rapids 14s vs Parkston – 5:30 p.m.
  • Game 4:  Vermillion 9, Crooks 2

Saturday, July 27th

  • Game 5:  Tabor vs Harrisburg – 12:00 p.m.
  • Game 6:  Dell Rapids 14s vs Crooks – 2:30 p.m.
  • Game 7:  Dakota Valley 5, Madison 1
  • Game 8:  Parkston vs Vermillion – 8:00 p.m.

Sunday, July 28th

  • 7th Place:  Game 5 loser vs Game 6 loser – 9:00 a.m.

Dells 14s – Region 4A Champs!

The Dell Rapids 14s Teener team won the Region 4A Championship in Milbank on Saturday, July 20th.  Dell Rapids opened up the tournament with a win over Madison White 5-3.  Dell Rapids 14s then moved on to play the Dell Rapids 13s on Thursday, July 18th.  Dell Rapids 14s defeated Dell Rapids 13s 6-4.  On Friday, July 19th, the two remaining undefeated teams in the tournament played against each other, Dell Rapids 14s and Milbank.  Dell Rapids got the win in an offensive battle 17-15.  The win earned Dell Rapids a trip to the state tournament.

Dell Rapids had to play two championship games on Saturday, July 20th.  Madison White avenged an earlier loss to Dell Rapids with a 12-7 win.  Since that was the first loss for Dell Rapids, another game had to be played to determine the Region 4A Championship.  Dell Rapids bounced back with a 12-7 win for the championship.

Head coach Monte Kerzman said, “What a great showing by these 13 boys from Dell Rapids!!”

Players on the team are Seth Andersen, Nick Hoffman, Nate McKee, Eric Klein, Hunter Hansen, Trevor Pulscher, Mason Peter, Tanner Heim, Ross Wiebenga, Dawson Kerzman, Ethan Brobjorg, Justin Dorn and Elijah Story.  Coaches are Kerzman and Steve Hansen.

Dell Rapids Ends Season in Region Tournament

Dell Rapids Post 65 saw their season come to an end on Saturday, July 20th, at the Region Tournament in Madison.  Dell Rapids opened up the tournament against Garretson on Thursday, July 18th.  Garretson defeated Dell Rapids 7-2 in the opening round.  Dell Rapids had to play Volga in an elimination game on Friday, July 19th, and Dell Rapids advanced with a 14-2 win in five innings.  Dell Rapids continued in the tournament on Saturday, July 20th, and faced Garretson one more time.  Garretson again got the best of Dell Rapids 7-2, ending the Dell Rapids season.

Garretson made their way to the championship game, falling to Fladreau 13-6.  Flandreau advanced to the State Tournament in Webster.  Flandreau will play Winner-Colome in the opening round on Friday, July 26th, at 10:00 a.m.

Dell Rapids Legion Prepares for Region Tournament

The Dell Rapids Legion baseball team will kick off region tournament play on Thursday, July 18th, in Madison.  Dell Rapids will be facing Garretson in the opening round.  Dell Rapids played Garretson in its final game of the year on Saturday, July 13th.  Garretson won the game 5-3.

Head Coach Ryan Robb said, “They are a solid baseball team that has had a good, strong program now for quite a few years.  They have a few guys that hit the ball well, and they also have a couple good arms.  Patrick Whetham and Cody Bonte are both good hitters and lead Garretson on the mound also.  We have to try and keep the ball down against those two or they will hit the ball all over the park.  Garretson has played good baseball all summer long, but I feel like overall we have played good baseball most of the summer as well.”

Weston Hansen will be anchoring the team in the infield at shortstop.  Hansen is hitting a team leading .519 with three home runs.  Nate Klein is second in the team in hitting with a .418 batting average.  Dell Rapids will also hope to get great at-bats from its lead-off hitter Tanner Solberg during the tournament.  Solberg leads the team with 17 walks on the year.  Dell Rapids will be looking to Spencer Kerzman, Zane Schumacher, and Cody Nielsen to lead the team on the mound during the regions.

Robb said, “It just comes down to us as a whole unit playing well.  Jordan (Solberg) and I have talked about team all summer long and how we have to talk and pick each other up game in and game out.  It has been a great season and this is truly a great group of young men who have made it a lot of fun.”

Dells-M 13-14 Teener Team Finishes 3rd in League Play

The Dell Rapids 13-14 Miller Teener team capped off a strong regular season by beating Harrisburg’s A squad 14-3 (5 inning run rule) in Harrisburg for their final regular season game on Thursday, July 11th.  Dells-Miller finishes the season in 3rd place out of 22 teams in the I-29 Teener League.  The two 13-14 Dell Rapids Teener teams will be now be split up into two different teams for the 2013 VFW 13-14 Region 4A baseball tournament held in Milbank July 17th – July 20th.  Complete information and tournament updates can be found by clicking this link.

Koch Records Double-Double at All-Star Game

Dell Rapids graduate Bryce Koch recorded a double-double in the 2013 South Dakota High School All-Star Boys Basketball game on Tuesday, July 16th, at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.  Koch finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds, along with two blocked shots and a couple of slam dunks.  Koch played for the South team which beat the North team 125-83.  The South led 61-35 at halftime and shot 65% (50-77) from the field in the game.  Mitchel Foster of Flandreau finished with nine points for the North team.

Koch will continue his basketball career at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa.

Region 4A 13-14 Teener Tournament

The 2013 VFW 13-14 Region 4A baseball tournament gets under way Wednesday, July 17th, and continues through Saturday, July 20th, at Legion Field in Milbank.  Dell Rapids will have two teams participating in the tournament, Dell Rapids 13s and Dell Rapids 14s.  Dell Rapids 14s will play their first game on Wednesday, July 17th, at 4:30 p.m. against Madison White.  Dell Rapids 13s will play their first game on Thursday, July 18th, at 10:30 a.m. against the winner of the Dell Rapids 14s-Madison White game.

Harrisburg Beats PBR on Late Rally

Dell Rapids PBR fell to 10-11 on the year and 7-9 in Cornbelt League play after a 6-7 loss to Harrisburg on Sunday, July 14th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.  Harrisburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning after a 2-out 2-RBI double by Jason Solma off of PBR starting pitcher Colin Karst.  Karst settled down after that and cruised to the top of the seventh inning only giving up two hits in that time.  Meanwhile Dell Rapids pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring four runs on four straight 2-out hits by Scott LeBrun, Travis Peters, Nate Henry, and Landon Klock.  PBR would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles by Peters and Nate Alfson to extend the lead to 6-3.

Harrisburg picked up another run in the to of the seventh off of Karst on an RBI single by Zach Weinandt.  Then in the top of the ninth inning, Harrisburg scored three times on two hits and two PBR errors to take a 7-6 lead.  Two runs were charged to Karst and the final run was charged to Klock.  Weinandt closed out the game for Harrisburg by stranding two PBR runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Peters went 3-5 in the game with a double and two RBI.  LeBrun was 2-5 with two RBI, and Henry, Klock and Kevin Krull each had two hits apiece.  Karst pitched 8+ innings giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits, walked one, and struck out four in the no-decision.  Klock picked up the loss pitching one inning, giving up one run, one hit, and walking one.  Weinandt picked up the win for Harrisburg.

Dell Rapids PBR will travel to Garretson on Tuesday, July 16th, and then travel to Humboldt to take on Humboldt-Hartford on Thursday, July 18th.

15-16 Teeners Add Two More Wins

The Dell Rapids 15/16 Teeners picked up two more wins recently.  Dell Rapids defected Sioux Falls Christian 10-2 on Monday, July 8th, and Humboldt/Hartford 16’s 9-0 on Thursday, July 11th.  Dell Rapids now improves to 13-5 on the year and 9-3 in the I-29 League.  They are currently tied for second in the 14-team league.

Dell Rapids scored four in the first and six in the sixth inning to pull away from SF Christian at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls.

Casey Hansen doubled and singled to lead the offense. Riley Jurgensen hit two singles. Brett Mogen doubled, and six players added a single in the 11-hit effort:  Jase Nelson, Riley Schmidt, Ben Gillogly, Zach Schroeder, Beau Carpenter and Ryan Geraets.

Adam Karst picked up a win with three innings of no-hit ball. He walked two and struck out two. Ty Hoglund followed with two innings of relief. He struck out three while allowing one run on two hits and three walks. Hansen finished the final two innings. He gave up one run on three hits and a walk.

Dell Rapids 9, Humboldt/Hartford 16’s 0

Mogen and Schmidt combined on a one-hitter to shut out Humboldt/Hartford 16’s 9-0. Mogen pitched the first four innings and gave up a single while striking out six. Schmidt finished the last three innings and yielded a walk while striking out four.

Schroeder led the offense with three RBI on a single. Hoglund, Karst, Schmidt, Mogen and Hansen all singled for Dell Rapids.

Dell Rapids is at Salem on Monday, July 15 to face the top team in the I-29 League. Salem/Montrose/Canova is 12-0 in league play. Madison Red-16 visits Dell Rapids on Thursday, July 18 for a 7:00 p.m. game.
