Josh Brown Breaks 5 School Records in 2013

DellRapidsStMaryFootballJosh Brown had a great sophomore football season for Dell Rapids St Mary in 2013.  Not only did Brown receive a Dakota Valley Conference All-Conference Team selection, he broke five school records this past season.  Brown set new records for rushing touchdowns in a season, total touchdowns in a season, total points scored in a season, most rushing yards in a season, and yards per carry in a season.

The previous records were:

Head coach Ross Flemmer said, “This is a pretty impressive feat…Josh had a great year, he worked hard and did what was asked of him.  What made him such a good runner, was that he ran hard, and always kept his legs moving.  He had great body lean and was always falling forward after contact.  He had a great season.”

Two Quarrier Football Coaches to Receive 25-Year Award

Quarrier LogoDane Stone and Craig Jorgensen will be honored at the 11A Championship football game for 25 years of coaching on Thursday, November 14th.  Stone and Jorgensen have been coaching together for the Quarriers since 1996.  Jorgensen joined the Quarriers in 1993, while Stone joined in 1996.

Coach Stone began his coaching career at Cresbard High School in 1989 as an assistant football coach and head boys basketball coach.  Since joining the Quarrier coaching staff, Stone has been a part of four state championships.  He’s also been awarded Assistant Football Coach of the Year at both the nine-man and eleven-man levels in his career.  Stone has also worked with youth football, softball, and baseball for the past several years.

Coach Jorgensen started his career, also in 1989, at Wolsey High School.  While there he coached high school football, high school track, and middle school basketball.  Jorgensen has been the head wrestling coach and assistant football coach since coming to Dell Rapids.  His wrestling teams placed 8th at state in 2006 and 5th in 2007.  Jorgensen was named Region 2B Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2006.  He has also coached the All Stars and Disney Duals.  Jorgensen has been a defensive football coach for four Quarrier state championship teams.

Quarriers Season Ends at 8-3

DRHSvsMadison_11-9-13The Dell Rapids Quarriers had their football season come to an end on Saturday, November 9th, in Madison.  The Madison Bulldogs defeated the Dell Rapid Quarriers 48-6 in the semifinals of the 11A playoffs.

The Bulldogs scored first with 8:01 in the first quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run by Rush Milne on fourth down to take a 7-0 lead.  Madison scored at the end of the first quarter with :23 on another fourth down play.  This time Milne scored from two yards out to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Both defenses held each other in check in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs maintained a 14-0 lead at halftime.

After Dell Rapids held Madison in the opening drive of the third quarter, the Bulldog defense came up with a big play.  Tanner Solberg was intercepted by Jacob Giles, and Giles returned it 25 yards for a touchdown with 8:26 in the third quarter for 21-0 lead.  Dell Rapids answered on their next drive on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Solberg to Riley Schmidt with 5:32 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 21-7.  However, the Bulldogs scored two times in a matter of nine seconds.  Milne scored his third touchdown with 1:15 to go in the quarter on a 3-yard run.  Madison then executed an onside kick and recovered the live ball.  On the very next play, Giles ran in for a touchdown from 32 yards with 1:06 to go to give the Bulldogs a 34-7 lead.  Madison added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.  Giles Preston Nordling on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 8:15 to go in the game, and Mitch Hansen scored on a 6-yard touchdown run for the final score of the game with 4:09 left.

Madison racked up 490 yards of total offense, 303 rushing yards and 187 passing yards.  Meanwhile, Dell Rapids was only able to gain 66 yards of total offense, 37 rushing yards and 29 passing yards.  Schmidt carried the ball 15 times for 27 yards, Jacob Huewe had four carries for 10 yards, and Brett Nichols had six carries for nine yards.  Solberg finished 2-8 for 36 yards, one interception and one touchdown.  Schmidt was 0-3 passing with an interception, and Jace Nelson 1-2 passing for -7 yards and an interception.  Schmidt had all three receptions for a total of 29 yards.  Milne had 29 carries for 146 yards and three touchdowns for the Bulldogs.  Giles had 12 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown.  Giles also was 12-23 passing for 176 yards and a touchdown.  Leading receiver for Madison was Mason Hemmer with four catches for 69 yards.

The Quarriers finish the year with an 8-3 record.

Four Cardinals Selected as DVC All-Conference

DellRapidsStMaryFootballFour Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals were selected as Dakota Valley Conference All-Conference players.  They are Leon Maxwell, Josh Brown, Christian Schnieders, and Ben Bunkers.  Jonah Longville and Jared Scholten were honorable mention selections.  Head Coach Ross Flemmer was also voted the Dakota Valley Conference Coach of the Year!

Quarriers Advance in Region 3A Tournament

Quarrier LogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers picked up their second win of the year in the first round of the Region 3A Tournament.  Dell Rapids beat Flandreau 25-19, 25-21, 25-17 in Flandreau.  Jordan Stone led the team with seven kills.  Sarah Haak had five kills, while Brittany Kludt and Emily Boyle each had four kills.  Maria Nagelhout had nine set assists along with six aces.  Haak also had seven set assists.  Defensively Bailey Munk and Shelby Wrage each had 12 digs.  Stone finished with two blocks.

Dell Rapids will take on the Madison Bulldogs at Sioux Falls Christian High School on Thursday, November 7th, at around 7:30 p.m.  The match will follow SF Christian vs Garretson, which starts at 6:00 p.m.

Quarrirers Back in Semifinal Round

DellRapidsFootballLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier football team advanced to the semifinals of the 11A playoffs with a 42-6 win over the Belle Fourche Broncs on Monday, November 4th, in Dell Rapids.

Dell Rapids led 13-0 after the first quarter after a 75-yard touchdown run by Riley Schmidt with 11:01 to go in the quarter, and a 3-yard run by Jacob Huewe with 9:57 to go in the quarter.  Jase Nelson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 7:27 to go in the second quarter to give Dell Rapids a 21-0 lead after the 2-point conversion.  The Quarriers added one more touchdown with 3:26 left in the half on a 50-yard run by Riley Schmidt.  The Broncs scored with 2:28 left in the second quarter on a 70-yard pass from Breck Young to Nathan Lange.  Dell Rapids led 28-6 at halftime.  In the fourth quarter, Tanner Solberg threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Schmidt with 10:08 left in the quarter.  The final score came with 7:15 to go in the game on a 16-yard touchdown run by Kahler Berven.

Dell Rapids had a total of 411 yards of offense, 351 yards rushing and 47 yards passing.  Schmidt had 11 carries for 233 yards and two touchdowns.  Huewe had nine carries for 40 yards and a touchdown.  Brett Nichols had eight carries for 37 yards.  Solberg finished 2-2 passing for 60 yards and a touchdown.  Schmidt had a catch for 28 yards and a touchdown.  Riley Jurgensen had a catch for 32 yards.  Schmidt also led the team in tackles with 6.5 on the game.  Andrew Wiebenga had 4.5 tackles, Nichols finished with 4.0 tackles, and Tanner Ljunggren also had 4.0 tackles in the game.

Dell Rapids improves to 8-2 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Madison to take on the Bulldogs in the semifinals on Saturday, November 9th, at 3:00 p.m.  Big Sioux Media will webcast the game starting at 2:45 p.m. with the pregame.

St Mary Season Ends with 8-2 Record

The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals football season came to an end in Avon on Monday, November 4th.  The Avon Pirates defeated the Cardinals in the second round of the 9B playoffs 46-8.

The Pirates scored first on a 24-yard touchdown run Brandon Kocmich after a six and a half minute opening drive.  The Cardinals answered on their first possession of the first quarter.  They held the ball for seven minutes and 24 seconds before Josh Brown scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with :01 remaining in the first quarter.  The 2-point conversion gave St Mary an 8-6 lead after the first quarter.

St Mary held that lead halfway through the second quarter, but Avon scored two touchdowns with a span of 3:22.  Logan Mudder scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 4:32 left in the second quarter, and Kocmich scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with :54 left to give Avon a 22-8 lead at halftime.  The Pirates added three more touchdowns in the second half, all by Devin Tolsma.  Tolsma scored on a 35-yard run with 9:51 left in the third quarter, and then he scored on a 1-yard run with :50 left in the third.  Avon led 38-8 after the third quarter.  Tolsma’s final touchdown came with 8:24 left in the game on a 2-yard run.

The Cardinals finish with an 8-2 overall record after a 7-1 regular season.

Cardinals Cruise to 1st Round Win

DellRapidsStMaryFootballThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals picked up a win over the Langord Lions 50-20 in the first round of the 9B South Dakota High School football playoffs on Tuesday, October 28th, in Dell Rapids.

The Cardinals scored on their opening drive with 7:49 to go in the first quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Christian Schnieders.  St Mary added another touchdown with 1:30 to go in the quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Wes Heinricy to Jared Scholten.  The Cardinals led 14-0 after the first quarter.

St Mary scored three times in the second quarter.  Jacob Glazier had a 36-yard touchdown run with 10:36 to go in the half.  Ben Bunkers followed that with a 16-yard touchdown run at the 8:15 mark of the second quarter.  Schnieders then picked up his second touchdown of the game on a 1-yard touchdown with 3:33 left in the half to give St Mary a 34-0 lead.  Langford scored with 3:13 to go in the half on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Bo Fries to Chance Olson.  The Cardinals had a 34-6 lead at halftime.

The Cardinals scored first in the second half on a 5-yard touchdown run by Bunkers with 7:58 to go in the third quarter.  The touchdown gave the Cardinals a 42-14 lead.  Langford scored their second touchdown of the game at the 6:05 mark of the third quarter on a 26-yard touchdown run by Fries.  But Dell Rapids St Mary would score one more time before the end of the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Heinricy to Josh Brown.  The Cardinals led 50-14 at the end of the third quarter.  Langford scored one more touchdown in the game on a 3-yard touchdown run by Lincoln Gibbs with 5:30 left in the game.

Brown had 21 carries for 153 yards in the game.  Bunkers finished with 16 carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns.  Schnieders had eight carries for 33 yards and two touchdowns.  Glazier had four carries in the game for 36 yards and a touchdown.  Heinricy finished 3-5 passing for 19 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.  Scholten had a 14-yard touchdown reception, and Brown also had a touchdown catch of one yard.

Defensively for Dell Rapids St Mary, Glazier and Scholten each had seven tackles.  Brown finished the game with six tackles.  Bunkers had three tackles and two interceptions in the game.The Cardinals improve to 8-1 on the year.  They will travel to Avon on Monday, November 4th, for the second round of the playoffs.

Quarriers Advance to 2nd Round

The Dell Rapids Quarriers defeated the Sisseton Redmen 34-12 in the opening round of the 11A South Dakota High School football playoffs on DRvsSisseton_FB_10-29-13_2Tuesday, October 29th, in Dell Rapids.  The Quarriers lead 14-0 after the first quarter thanks to a 24-yard touchdown run by Riley Schmidt and a 25-yard touchdown run by Brett Nichols in the quarter.  Sisseton scored first in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-6 on a 19-yard pass from Hunter Medenwald to Ethan Kranhold.  Dell Rapids would score with :44 before halftime on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Solberg to Schmidt to give the Quarriers a 20-6 halftime lead.  The Quarriers picked up two more touchdowns in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Schmidt and 15-yard pass from Solberg to Zach Schroeder.  Sisseton picked up a late touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run by Brayden Tasa.

Dell Rapids picked up 352 yards of total offense in the game, 300 on the ground and 52 yards through the air.  They had 19 first down, held the ball for little over 30 minutes in the game, and finished 5-10 on their 3rd down conversions.  Schmidt lead the ground attack with 16 carries for 144 yards and two touchdowns, and also had 26 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.  Nichols carried the ball 10 times for 66 yards and a touchdown, while Jacob Huewe had 11 carries for 54 yards.  Solberg finished 4-8 passing for 52 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

Defensively for Dell Rapids, Schroeder and Tanner Ljunggren each finished the game with 5.0 tackles.  Brock Reinhiller had 4.0 tackles, Ben Gillogly finished with 4.0 tackles, and Zach White had 3.0 tackles.

Dell Rapids improves to 7-2 on the year.  The Quarriers will host Belle Fourche on Monday, November 4th, in the second round of the playoffs.

Bulldogs Defeat Cardinals in Volleyball Action

DRSM LogoThe DeSmet Bulldogs defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 3-1 on Monday, October 28th, in Dell Rapids by scores of 25-14, 20-25, 25-17, 25-15.

DeSmet started off the match and first game with a 9-1 run, and then extended that lead to 15-3.  The Cardinals were not able to recover from the large deficit as DeSmet went on to win the first game.  The second game was back and forth early, but the Cardinals were able to get a 16-9 lead.  DeSmet, however, tied the game at 16-16.  Dell Rapids St Mary scored the next three points though, and went on to win the second game.  The third game was again back and forth to start was tied 12-12.  The two teams again were tied 16-16, but DeSmet scored the next five points, and finished the game on a 9-1 run.  The Bulldogs again used an early run to open up game four, jumping out to a 9-1 lead.  The Cardinals were only able to close the game to 15-7 before falling by a final score of 25-15.

The loss drops the Cardinal record to 12-15 on the season.  Dell Rapids St Mary finished up the regular season at home hosting Canistota on Thursday, October 31st.
