Cardinal Cross Country Teams Participate in Colman/Egan Event

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal cross country teams participated in the Colman/Egan event on Wednesday, October 1st.  Mt. Vernon/Plakinton won the girls event with a team score of 7.  Deubrook finished second with 27 points, and Dell Rapids St Mary was third with a score of 34.  Mt. Vernon/Plankinton also won the boys event with a team score of 26.  McCrossan finished second with a team score of 38, and Baltic was third with 38.  The Cardinals finished fifth with a score of 44.

Quarrier Volleyball Falls to McCook Central/Montrose

QuarriersThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team was defeated by the McCook Central/Montrose Cougars 20-25, 25-16, 20-25, 23-25 on Tuesday, September 30th, in Dell Rapids.

Tiffany Finkral had 13 service points and a season-high 12 kills in the match.  Brittany Kludt had nine kills and three blocks for the Quarriers.  Sara Haak finished the match with 28 set assists.  Defensively for Dell Rapids, Shelby Wrage led the team with 12 digs.  Baily Munk added 10 digs.

Dell Rapids falls to 7-9 on the year.  The Quarriers will travel to Lennox to take on the Orioles on Thursday, October 2nd.

JV Results:
The JV team lost to the Cougars 2-1.  Sami Reider and Hannah Welbig anchored the backrow play.  Sara Van Regenmorter, Kiah Schumacher, and Trinity Gordon were cited for the offensive leadership.

C Team Results:
The C team also fell to the Cougars 2-1.  All 16 players on the C team saw action and contributed nicely in the heart-breaking defeat.

Baltic Earns Win over Cardinal Volleyball Team

DRSMvsBaltic_9-30-14_4The Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team lost a match in straight sets to the Baltic Bulldogs 17-25, 16-25, 17-25 on Tuesday, September 30th, in Dell Rapids.

Ally Mullaney led the team with eight kills on the night.  Lindsey Wolles and Brandi Wolles each had three kills apiece.  L. Wolles also dished out nine set assists in the match.  Mullaney was also a force on the defensive side, ending the night with 18 digs.  Claudia Schwebach had 14 digs, and Kaitlyn Vortherms added 11 digs.  Vortherms and Nicole Brown both had a service ace in the match.

The Cardinals fall to 5-13 on the year.  St Mary will travel to Freeman to take on Freeman Public on Monday, October 6th.DRSMvsBaltic_9-30-14_1

Quarrier Golf Team Wins Region Tournament

NewDRLogoAll five of the Quarrier golf team placed in the top 10, and Dell Rapids won the Region 1A Boys Golf Tournament in Sisseton on Monday, September 29th.  The Quarriers finished with a team score of 321.  Aberdeen Roncalli finished second with 339, and Madison finished third with a 356.

Ty Hoglund captured first place with a round of 78.  Devon Weber was right behind him in second place with a 79.  Adam Karst also fired a 79 officially finishing fourth.  Mason Schmidt finished eighth with an 85, and Josh Parrott placed tenth with a round of 86.

The 2014 year was a dominating year for the Quarrier golf team.  Dell Rapids never placed lower than second as a team in any tournament this year.  The Quarriers will try to defend their 2013 State A title at the 2014 State A Boys Golf Tournament in Hot Springs on October 6th and 7th.

Cardinal Football Loses 1st Game of Year

DellRapidsStMaryFootballThe Dell Rapids St. Mary Cardinal football team (3-1) fell to the 9AA #2 Arlington Cardinals 34-6 in Arlington on Friday, September 26th. Arlington was out rushed by St. Mary by 50 yards, but five big plays and a strong defensive front for Arlington when St Mary was in Arlington territory proved to be the difference in the game.

Arlington scored first on the third play of the game with a 64-yard touchdown run by Alex Heuer. After possessions by both teams, Arlington struck again with a 50-yard touchdown run by Andrew King to end the first quarter.  Arlington lead 13-0.

St. Mary came out in the second quarter with a 52-yard kick off return by Jacob Glazier. St. Mary was then shut down by Arlington’s defense on the drive. Arlington scored on another big play later in the quarter.  Arlington recovered a fumbled punt, and the turnover led to a touchdown on a pass play from King to Heuer.

St Mary got on the board with a one-yard touchdown run by Josh Brown, but on the ensuing kicking off, Arlington’s Luke Weber returned the kickoff for a touchdown to make the score 28-6.  Arlington added another score later in the game for the 34-6 win.

Coach Flemmer said that when playing a good team like Arlington you cannot give the momentum back after good things happen.

St. Mary will host Castlewood (2-2) on Friday, October 3rd, for Homecoming.

Cardinal Volleyball Finished Third at Elkton

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team finished third at the Elkton/Lake Benton tournament in Elkton with a record of 2-2.

The Cardinals opened up the tournament losing a match to Elkton/Lake Benton 5-25, 10-25.  Lindsey Wolles finished the match with four set assists and five digs.

St Mary rebounded with a 16-25, 25-23, 25-13 win over Centerville in their next match.  Jackie Wolles had nine kills, and four digs.  Ally Mullaney added 18 kills and 15 digs.  Claudia Schwebach tallied nine digs, and L. Wolles had 31 set assists along with nine digs.

St Mary was then defeated by Alcestor/Hudson 15-25, 14-25.

The Cardinals finished the day with a win over Iroquois 25-22, 23-25, 25-19.  Mullaney had 18 more kills with 14 digs in that match.  Riley Wolles added seven kills.  L. Wolles had eight more digs in the match.

Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals record now stands at 5-12 on the year.  The Cardinals will host Baltic on Tuesday, September 30th.

Big 4th Quarter Propels Quarrier Football to Win

DellRapidsFootballLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier football team scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Dakota Valley Panthers and earn a 56-20 win on Friday, September 26th, at Dakota Valley High School.

Dell Rapids scored the first two touchdowns of the game in the first quarter.  Riley Schmidt scored on a 57 yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter to give the Quarriers a 7-0 lead.  Schmidt found the endzone again near the end of the quarter, this time from seven yards, to push the Quarrier lead to 14-0 after the first quarter.

Dakota Valley scored first in the second quarter on a 12-yard pass from Luke Schmitt to Brady Glissman to cut the lead to 14-7.  Dell Rapids answered on another Schmidt touchdown.  His third touchdown came on a 48-yard pass from Jase Nelson, and Dell Rapids led 21-7.  The Panthers closed the game before halftime on a 46-yard pass from Schmitt to Glissman again to make the score 21-13 at halftime.

Keegan Hemenway dove into the endzone at the end of a seven-yard run on the first drive of the second half for Dell Rapids to extend the Quarrier lead to 28-13.  Dakota Valley, however, would pull within one touchdown again as Schmitt found Ethan Klasi in the endzone on an 11-yard pass to make the score 28-20 at the end of the third quarter.

That’s when the Quarrier offense and defense took control of the game.  Tanner Ljunggren scored on a six-yard run to make the score 36-20.  After the Dell Rapids defense forced the Panthers to punt, Schmidt capped off a Dell Rapids drive with his fourth touchdown on a 19-yard run.  Just a mere 20 seconds later, Schmidt scored on a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown to give Dell Rapids a 49-20 lead.  Anthony Miller scored the final touchdown for Dell Rapids on a one-yard run.

Schmidt had 10 carries for 124 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.  Schmidt also had three catches for 83 yards and a receiving touchdown, plus the interception return for a touchdown.  Ljunggren finished the game with 11 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown.  Hemenway had nine carries for 43 yards and a touchdown.  Nelson finished 5-8 passing for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Ben Gillogly led the defense with nine tackles and a sack.  Beau Carpenter had seven tackles in the game.  Ljunggren added six tackles, and Seth Anderson finished with five tackles.

Dell Rapids improves to 3-1 on the year and will host Lennox on Friday, October 3rd, for Homecoming.

Quarrier Volleyball Defeats Flandreau

The Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team defeated the Flandreau Fliers on Thursday, September 25th, in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-23, 25-16.

DRvsFlandreau_9-25-14_3Defensively for Dell Rapids, Brittany Kludt had three blocks.  Shelby Wrage had 10 digs, and Sarah Haak added six digs.  The Quarriers were led offensively by Tiffany Finkral with 13 kills, and Mikaela Stofferahn with 11 kills.  Haak had 18 set assists on the night.  Wrage also tallied 11 service points.

The Quarriers improve to 6-5 on the year and will play in the Pentagon Classic on Saturday, September 27th.

JV Results:
The JV team also defeated the Fliers two sets to none.  Kiah Schumacher, Trinity Gordon, Sydney Stofferahn, and Megan Miles were cited for their contributions both on offense and defense.DRvsFlandreau_9-25-14_2

Elkton/Lake Benton Ends Cardinal Volleyball Win Streak

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team had their win streak come to an end.  The Cardinals lost to Elkton/Lake Benton by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-12 on Thursday, September 25th.

Ally Mullaney finished the night with eight kills, three blocks and eight digs.  Jackie Wolles added three kills.  Lindsey Wolles had 11 set assists and nine digs defensively.  Kaitlyn Vortherms ended the match with a total of 18 digs.

The Cardinals fall to 3-10 on the year.  They will play in the Elkton Tournament on Saturday, September 27th.

Quarrier Competitive Cheer Second at Sioux Valley

The Dell Rapids Quarrier Competitive Cheer team finished second at 2014 Sioux Valley Competitive Cheer and Dance Competition.  Sioux Valley was crowned the Grand Champion with a team score of 138.50.  Dell Rapids finished with a score of 132.00.  Redfield/Doland was third with 117.00.  Lake Preston/Arlington finished fourth with a score of 110.00.  Faulkton was fifth with 103.50, and Mount Vernon/Plankinton was sixth with a score of 89.00

The team will next compete at the O’Gorman Invite on October 2nd.
