Already leading 20-0, Jaxon Janke intercepted a Hansen pass deep in Madison territory returning it 91 yards for another Madison touchdown.  The Bulldogs led 27-0 at halftime.  Frederiksen found the endzone again in the third quarter from 20 yards away.  Mason Leighton also had a 41-yard touchdown reception on a pass from Hanson for the Bulldogs.

Cardinal Football Starts Season with a Loss to Canistota

August 30, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DRSMvsCAN_8-28-15_FB1In the season-opener for the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal football team, the Canistota Hawks ruined an otherwise perfect night for football on Friday, August 28th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.  In a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal playoff game, the Canistota Hawks once again defeated the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals, this time by a score of 36-0.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard early.  After taking the opening kickoff, Canistota scored with 10:06 left in the first quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by Jerad Nielsen to go ahead 6-0.  St Mary was forced into a three-and-out in their first possession, giving the ball right back to Canistota.  The Hawks had possession of the ball for almost the entire first quarter, but the St Mary defense held tough, allowing just the one touchdown in the first quarter.

Canistota was able to break through the Cardinal defense again in the second quarter with 8:31 to go when Nielsen again found the endzone, this time on an 18-yard run.  The two-point conversion was successful, and the Hawks went ahead 14-0.  Canistota had the ball again late in the second quarter and drove deep into Cardinal territory near halftime.  With just seconds remaining, Shay Jolley took the snap, handed the ball off to Jalen Kaufman, and Kaufman scored as time expired in the half to give Canistota a 20-0 lead at halftime. DRSMvsCAN_8-28-15_FB2

The St Mary Cardinals took the kickoff to begin the third quarter and looked to be building momentum as they drove deep into Hawk territory.  Josh Brown appeared to score on a 10-yard run, but the play was called back due to a holding penalty.  The penalty appeared to steal all momentum away from St Mary.  The Cardinals were unable to score, and the ball went back to Canistota on downs.  After each team traded interceptions, the Hawks scored again with 5:59 to go in the third quarter on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Jolley to Drew Seubert.   Jolley and Seubert connected again in the fourth quarter with 10:17 to go for the final score, this time on a 32-yard touchdown pass.

St Mary finished with a total of 118 yards of offense, while Canistota racked up 317 yards of offense.  Brown finished with 11 carries for 38 yards.  Garret Frost was 4-6 passing for 51 yards.  G. Frost also had a catch for 10 yards.  Jacob Glazier had two catches for 23 yards, and Casey Hansen had a catch for 20 yards.  Christian Schnieders led the defense with 10.5 tackles.  Dalton Houska had 9.5 tackles, a half sack, and a fumble recovery.  Jacob Frost finished with eight tackles and a half sack.  G. Frost tallied seven tackles and a half sack.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 0-1 on the season.  They will host Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday, September 4th.  The game can be seen again on Big Sioux Media.

Changes to 2015-2016 Sports Season

August 23, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The 2015-2016 high school sports season has arrived, and this year will bring changes to both Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary schools for the upcoming seasons.

The biggest change will be for the Quarrier football team.  Class 11A football will be completely different this year.  The first change the Quarriers will face is no “open” date.  Class 11A football will be moving from an eight game schedule to a nine game schedule.  After the Quarriers complete the new nine game schedule, they will see a change in the playoff format.  11A will move to the same format that 11AAA and 11AA use.  Only the top eight teams in powerpoints will advance to the playoffs, thus eliminating one playoff game.  Class 11A will play the quarterfinal game on October 29th, and the semifinal game will be played on November 6th or 7th.

Head coach Steve Hansen said that he was a little hesitant about the change in the playoff system.  “With our schedule, the Dak-12 Conference, we are going to be playing the top teams in 11A week in and week out, and with the west river schedules, they will probably end with better records than some of the schools around here.  With the new power point system, they say that won’t matter, the best teams are going to make the playoffs.  We will have to see how it all shakes out this year.”

Both Dell Rapids and Dell Rapids St Mary will see new teams this year.  Canton and Sioux Falls Christian both make the jump from 11B to 11A this year.  Dell Rapids St Mary will have a couple of new teams on their schedule this year.  Arlington and Lake Preston have entered into a co-op for football this year.  Castlewood and Estelline have also entered into a co-op for football.  The Cardinals will have games against both of those combined teams this year, and have added Canistota and De Smet to fill the two empty spots created by the co-ops.

Both schools will have a change in their respective district and region plan.  Baltic has made the jump to Class A this year, meaning District 7B will now be a five-team district.  Baltic will now join Dell Rapids, Flandreau, Flandreau Indian, Garretson, Madison and Sioux Falls Christian in Region 3A making that a seven-team region.

Dell Rapids 15s Participate in State VFW Tournament

August 11, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DellRapids15s_StateDell Rapids 15s ended their season in Humboldt August 7th and 8th after losing both of their games in the State A VFW Varsity Teener Tournament.

They lost their first game 8-2 against Canova-Salem on Friday, August 7th.  Dell Rapids kept things close through four innings despite four errors.  However, already leading 3-2, Canova-Salem would go on to score three runs in the fifth inning and close the book on the Dell Rapids starting pitcher Austin Ellingson.  Ellingson took the loss for Dell Rapids allowing six runs, five earned, while striking out six.  Eddie Price would enter the game in relief, but allow two more runs in the seventh inning.  Price picked up the lone Dell Rapids hit.

Dell Rapids then faced Milbank on Saturday, August 8th, in an elimination game.  Milbank jumped out early scoring two runs in the top of the top of the first inning, but Dell Rapids would answer in the bottom half of the inning.  Seth Spielmann reached on a walk and advanced to second on a Carter Gullickson single.  Keegan Miller drove in both base runners with a double to the right field gap.  Miller then stole third and advanced home on a throwing error from the Milbank catcher.

Those three runs would be all the offense for Dell Rapids.  Milbank picked up another run in the second inning to tie the game at 3-3.  That’s where the  score remained until the final inning when Milbank added two more runs on two Dell Rapids errors, sealing a 5-3 victory.

Gullickson would go the distance for Dell Rapids, but took the loss allowing five runs, but only three earned.

Dakota Valley won the state championship defeating West Central 6-5 Sunday evening.

Dell Rapids 15s Headed to 15/16 State Tournament

August 1, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

The Dell Rapids 15s Teener team qualified for the 15/16 State A VFW Teener Tournament by placing 2nd in the Region 3A tournament which was held in Dell Rapids at Rickeman Field July 27-29.

Dell Rapids 15s started the tournament on Monday, July 27th against West Central.  West Central won the game despite outstanding pitching performances by Elijah Story (four innings) and Lealand Randel (two innings).  West Central scored four runs on three consecutive Dell Rapids throwing errors in the third inning with two outs.  Dell Rapids was only able to muster one run in the game and fell to West Central 4-1.  Seth Spielmann and Story each collected two hits in the game.

Now in the loser’s bracket, Dell Rapids came back and won their next game over Dell Rapids 16s 9-0 on Tuesday, July 28th.  Dell Rapids 15s turned two double-plays in the first and second innings.  Austin Ellingson struck out 11 batters in a complete-game shutout.  Story threw out two attempted base stealers at second during the game.  Jeffry Schuch led the offense for Dell Rapids 15s going 3-4 with a double and five RBIs.  Keegan Miller added two hits, and Ellingosn, Carter Gullickson, and Elijah Story each scored two runs.

Dell Rapids 15s earned a spot in the finals by defeating Tri-Valley 2-0 on Wednesday, July 29th, in an exciting pitching dual.  Gullickson carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, which is when Tri-Valley would get their only hit of the game.  Gullickson finished the one-hit shutout for the win by striking out six batters.  The defense was solid for Dell Rapids as they did not commit an error in the game.  Miller was 3-3 offensively with three singles.  Spielmann went 2-3 and drove in both runs of the game.

Dell Rapids 15s met up with West Central again, this time in the championship game, on Wednesday, July 29th.  After a sluggish start to the game, Dell Rapids was able to tie the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning.  However, Dell Rapids would run out of steam and surrender seven runs to West Central in the seventh inning to fall 13-6.  Story, Schuch, Spielmann, Cameron Bruhn, and Eddie Price all picked up a hit and scored a run in the game.  Logan Ruesink was 2-4 with two RBIs.

Since West Central is hosting the 15/16 State A VFW Teener tournament and was already automatically qualified, the region bid in the state tournament went to Dell Rapids 15s after finishing second in regions.

The state tournament will be held in Humboldt August 7-9.

Dell Rapids Mudcats Heading Back to State

July 31, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

MudcatsLogoA four-run seventh inning lifted the Dell Rapids Mudcats over the Madison Broncos 4-3 at the District 4B Amateur Baseball Tournament in Flandreau on Thursday, July 30th.  The win qualified the Mudcats for the State B Tournament in Mitchell August 5-15.

Madison jumped on Matt Wilbur and the Mudcats right away in the first inning.  The Broncos scored three times on four hits and two Mudcat errors.  Madison would leave the bases loaded, but took an early 3-0 lead.  The Mudcats struggled to find their offense as they were only able to get two total hits through the first six innings.

Madison, meanwhile, threatened to add to their lead in just about every inning.  The Broncos had at least one hit in every inning through the first six innings, but were unable to push across any more runs.  The momentum seemed to shift Dell Rapids way in the top of the sixth inning.  Madison had three hits in the inning, but had a runner thrown out at home, and they again left the bases loaded.

The Mudcats finally got to Brandon Burg in the seventh inning.  Joe Lewellen reached on a one-out single.  Jimmy Bauer hit a two-out double to put runners on second and third.  Travis Peters drove in the Mudcats’ first run with an RBI single.  Kris King drew a walk, and the Mudcats had the bases loaded with two outs.  Madison made a pitching change bringing in Chris Brozik to face Nate Henry.  Henry drove a double off the base of the wall to drive in three runs to give Dell Rapids a 4-3 lead.

Wilbur got through the final two innings to get the complete-game win and send Dell Rapids to the state tournament. Wilbur gave up three runs, two earned, on 11 hits while striking out 10 and walking four.  He was able to pitch Dell Rapids through a rough night in the field as the Mudcats committed five errors.

Henry finished 1-3 with a double and three RBI.  Peters was 2-4 with a double and an RBI.  Bauer, King and Lewellen also collected hits for Dell Rapids.

The Mudcats will enter the state tournament as the District 4B #2 rep.  Pairings for the state tournament will be released after the conclusion of all the district tournaments.
