Late 2nd Quarter Run Sends Badgers to Win over Cardinals

drsmvsa-lp_fb_9-23-16_1The Arlington/Lake Preston Badgers scored four times in the second quarter on their way to a 68-30 win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals on the Cardinal’s Homecoming game on Friday, September 23rd.

St Mary scored the first touchdown of the game with 2:15 left in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Dalton Houska.  The Badgers answered with 1:16 left in the quarter when Devon Heuer scored on a 61-yard run.  A/LP converted the two-points and led 8-6 after the first quarter.

The Cardinals regained the lead with 10:50 to play in the second quarter after Sam Schwebach scored on a one-yard run.  Houska scored the two-point converstion, and St Mary went ahead 14-0.  The Badgers tied the game at 14-14 with 7:55 to play in the half on an eight-yard touchdown run by Heuer.  The Badgers then scored three more times in the second quarter, two scores after St Mary turnovers, and A/LP held a 36-14 lead at halftime. drsmvsa-lp_fb_9-23-16_2

St Mary scored the first touchdown of the second half with 7:21 to go when Garret Frost connected with Schwebach on a 10-yard pass on fourth down to pull the Cardinals within 14 at 36-22.  The Badgers, however, kept rolling offensively scoring the next three touchdowns to go ahead 60-22.  Payton Park scored with 7:22 to go for the Cardinals on a 15-yard run, but A/LP added one more score a few minutes later.

The Cardinals had 356 yards of total offense, but the Badgers had 431 yards.  Frost had 16 carries for 55 yards in the game.  Houska finished with 12 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown.  Luke Brown was 3-4 passing for 69 yards.  Frost was 3-7 passing for 43 yards and a touchdown.  Evan Brown had two catches for 48 yards, and Frost had two catches for 44 yards.  Houska led the team defensively with seven tackles on the night.

St Mary fell to 1-4 on the year.  The Cardinals will host Elkton/Lake Benton on Friday, September 30th.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Cardinal Volleyball Falls to Colman/Egan

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal volleyball team fell to the Colman/Egan Hawks on Thursday, September 22nd.  The Hawks won in straight games by scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-18.

Maddie Schwebach finished the night with seven kills, one block, two digs and two ace serves.  Rhiannon Glazier had five kills, three digs, two blocks, and two ace serves.  Cassy Geraets finished with 10 set assists and five ace serves.  Haley Michel tallied eight digs, while Carly Maxwell had five digs, and Jackie Wolles had four digs.  Kennedi Mullaney added three kills on the night.

The Cardinals fall to 2-10 on the season.  St Mary will play in the Elkton Tournament on Saturday, September 24th.

Quarrier Cheer Team Finishes 2nd at Sioux Valley

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier competitive cheer team finished second overall at the Sioux Valley Competitive Cheer and Dance Invite on Thursday, September 22nd.  The Quarriers finished with a team score of 138.00.  Sioux Valley won the cheer event with 158.00 points.  Arlington/Lake Preston was third with 109.50 points, Redfield-Doland fourth with 96.50 points, and Faulkton fifth with 95.50 points.

The Quarriers will be at the O’Gorman Invite on Tuesday, September 27th.

Rocky Run Golf Course Hosts Dells Cross Country Invite

CrossCountry-GenericThe Dell Rapids Rocky Run Golf Course hosted the Dell Rapids Cross Country Invite on Wednesday, September 23rd.  The Dell Rapids girls team finished second with a score of 32 points.  Flandreau won the girls title with 28 points.  Garretson was third with 37 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton won the boys title with 44 points.  Flandreau Indian School was second with 51 points, and Tea Area was third with 57 points.

Connor Libis (DRSM) finished first individually in the boys division.  Madeline Hursey (Flandreau) was first individually for the girls.

The Quarrier cross country teams will be at the West Central Invite on Monday, September 26th.  The Cardinal cross country teams will be at the Colman-Egan Invite on Wednesday, September 28th.

Quarrier Volleyball Wins Sixth Match of Season

NewDRLogoAfter starting the season 0-3, the Dell Rapids Quarriers have now won six of their last seven matches, the latest win coming on Tuesday, September 20th, against Garretson.  The Quarriers won by set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23 against the Blue Dragons in Garretson.

Trinity Gordon paced the offense with 19 kills.  Emma Paul added 11 kills.  Gordon also had a block on the night.  Chloe Solberg had 33 set assists in the match.  Solberg also had 13 digs and three ace serves.  Brooke Klein had 26 digs.  Paul and Hanna Fletcher each had two ace serves.

The Quarriers now improve to 6-4 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host the Flandreau Fliers on Thursday, September 22nd.

Quarrier Golf Finishes 10th at Dak 12 Tourney

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier boys golf team finished 10th at the Dak-12 Conference Tournament on Monday, September 19th, at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion.  Dell Rapids finished with a team score of 363.  Tea Area won the team title with a score of 316.  Canton was second with a 332, and Dakota Valley was third with a 336.

Jordan Kerns finished the tournament tied for 20th with a round of 85.  Mason Schmidt finished with an 86.  Sheldon Siemonsma had a round of 94.  Karsen Welbig had a 96, Jack Weber a 116, and Malakai Andersen a 129.

The Quarriers will play in the Region 1A Tournament on Monday, September 26th, at the Madison Country Club.

Brookings Cheer & Dance Invite Results

The Dell Rapids Quarrier and Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinal competitive cheer teams both competed at the Brookings Cheer and Dance Invite on Saturday, September 17th.  The invite consisted of 18 teams from both Class AA and Class A.

The Cardinals finished 12th overall and third among Class A teams with a score of 192.0.  Dell Rapids finished 14th overall and fifth among Class A teams with a score of 189.50.  Sioux Falls Roosevelt was the overall champion with 269.50 points.  Brandon Valley was second with 259.50 points, and Watertown was third with 232.00 points.  Sioux Valley was the top Class A school and finished 6th overall with a score of 215.50.  Wagner was the second Class A team and finished 9th overall with a score of 196.50.

Dell Rapids will be at the Sioux Valley Invite on Thursday, September 22nd, the O’Gorman Invite on Tuesday, September 27th, and the Dakota Valley Invite on Saturday, October 1st.

The Cardinals will participate in the Dakota Valley Invite on Saturday, October 1st.

Castlewood/Estelline Surges Past Cardinals in Second Half

drsmvscastlewood_fb_9-16-16A second half surge by the Castlewood/Estelline Warriors gave them a Homecoming win over the Dell Rapids St Mary Cardinals 38-22 on Friday, September 16th, in Castlewood.

The Cardinals started the game off with a bang when Sam Schwebach scored on the second play of the game.  He reeled off a 51-yard run to put St Mary ahead 6-0 with 11:51 to play in the first quarter.  Neither team scored again the first, and the Cardinals led 6-0 after the first quarter.  St Mary struck again with 6:38 left in the second quarter on a six-yard touchdown run by Dalton Houska.  Evan Brown converted the two-point conversion to extend the Cardinal lead to 14-0.  The Warriors answered on their next drive when Dalton Eng scored from 17 yards away to cut the lead to 14-8 with 3:52 remaining in the half.  The Cardinals scored again before halftime when E. Brown scored on a nine-yard run with 1:02 left in the half.  Houska scored the two-point conversion, and St Mary led 22-8 at halftime.

The Warriors scored on their first drive of the second half on a six-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Benike to Shelby Kerkvliet with 9:33 left in the third to cut the lead to 22-16.  St Mary then went on a 6:00 drive, but the Cardinals turned the ball over on downs to the Castlewood/Estelline deep in Warrior territory.  The Warriers then took the lead for the first time at 24-22 with 1:03 to go in the third quarter on a 34-yard touchdown run by Eng.  The Cardinals were able to drive down the field again early in the fourth quarter, but turned the ball over on a fumble inside the five yard line.  Castlewood/Estelline scored again with 6:41 to go in the game on Eng’s third touchdown to extend the lead to 30-22.  Eng would find the endzone again with 2:11 to play on a three-yard run.

St Mary finished the night with 17 first downs and 307 yards of total offense.  Houska had 25 carries for 95 yards in the game.  Luke Brown was 3-5 passing for 30 yards.  E. Brown had 12 carries for 61 yards and also one catch for 19 yards.

St Mary falls to 1-3 on the year.  The Cardinals will host Arlington/Lake Preston on Homecoming Friday, September 23rd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Tea Area Shuts Out Quarriers

DellRapidsFootballLogoThe Tea Area Titans posted a 19-0 shutout against the Dell Rapids Quarriers on their Homecoming Night Friday, September 16th.  Tea scored right away on an 84-yard kick-off return for a touchdown by Adam Heien to go ahead 6-0.  The Titans added another score with :57 left in the first quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Payton Conrad to Jacob Rotter.  The score remained 13-0 at halftime.  The final touchdown came on a fumble recovery for a touchdown with 9:38 to go in the third quarter.

Dell Rapids had the ball for 31:14 in the game as compared to just 16:46 for Tea Area, but the Quarriers were just 2-13 on third down conversions and 4-9 on fourth down conversions.  Dell Rapids also fumbled the ball five times, losing two of them, and also had two passes intercepted.

Hunter Hansen finished the game 4-14 passing for 72 yards and two interceptions.  Hansen also carried the ball 20 times for 95 yards.  Tanner Heim had 14 cararies for 59 yards, and Adam Nagelhout had nine carries for 17 yards.  Nagelhout also hauled in two catches for 38 yards.  Matt Gillogly had six tackles, four for loss, and an interception.  Nate McKee finished with five tackles and an interception.  Heim, Seth Andersen, and Mason Peter all finished the game with five tackles.  Trevor Pulscher had four tackles, including two sacks.

Dell Rapids falls to 2-2 on the year.  The Quarriers will host West Central on Homecoming Friday, September 23rd.  The game can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

Quarrier Volleyball Continues Hot Streak

NewDRLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier volleyball team kept their hot streaking rolling with a 25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 25-16 win over the Tri-Valley Mustangs on Thursday, September 15th, at Dell Rapids High School.  The Quarriers have now won five of their last six matches.

Trinity Gordon had 18 kills and 27 digs for the Quarriers in the match.  Brooke Klein added 11 points and 27 digs. Emma Paul notched eight kills.  Sydney Stofferahn had seven kills and three blocks, and Chloe Solberg had 12 digs and 34 set assists on the night.

Dell Rapids improves to 5-4 on the season.  The Quarriers travel to Garretson to take on the Blue Dragons on Tuesday, September 20th.  The match can be seen on Big Sioux Media.

JV Results:

The JV won two sets to zero.  Paving the way were Regan Stone (three kills, five digs, seven points), Hannah Fletcher (four kills, seven digs, and nine set assists), and Gabi Rus (nine digs, nine service points).

C Team Results:

The C-team also picked up a match win.  Leading the total team effort were Ava Schuring (nine points, six digs), Jenna Miles (six points), Dezi Rus ( 18 digs and six kills).  Cited for their all-around play were Mallory Haak and Kyra Graham.
