Richard Gruhlke

Richard GruhlkeRichard L. Gruhlke, 54, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at his residence in Sioux Falls, SD of natural causes.

A visitation will begin at 6:00 pm Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Miller West Funeral Chapel, 6200 W. 41st St., with a Masonic Service at 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be 2:00 pm Friday, August 16, 2013, at Peace Lutheran Church with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery.  To leave condolences please visit www.millerfh.com.  

Richard Lynn Gruhlke, the son of Alan and Alice (Ross) Gruhlke was born November 8, 1958, in Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from Washington High School in 1977, and went on to earn a degree in Automotive Mechanics from Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls.

On May 20, 1983, Richard was united in marriage with Christi Pesicka in Sioux Falls, SD. He was employed at Love’s Truck Stop.

Richard was a member of the Masonic Lodge Trinity #200 and the El Riad Shrine in Sioux Falls. Within the Shrine, he was a member of the Clowns and was the secretary for the Provosts. Richard loved camping and being outdoors with his family and friends.

Grateful for having shared his life are one son, Heath Gruhlke and his fiancé, Autumn Christensen, of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Heather Morris and her husband, Jake, of Dell Rapids, SD; five grandchildren, Jacob, Becca, and Brihannah Gruhlke, and Grace and Jacob Morris; his father, Alan Gruhlke of Sioux Falls; one brother, Michael Gruhlke of Sioux Falls; one sister, Peggy Zickrick and her husband, Rodney, of Sioux Falls; one sister-in-law, Deb Gruhlke of Sioux Falls; his former spouse, Christi Pesicka of Hills, MN; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice on January 30, 2013; and a brother, Randy Gruhlke.

Lennie Spilde

Lennie Spilde

Lennie “Len” R. Spilde, 69, of Dell Rapids, SD and Sun City West, AZ, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2013. His memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 19, 2013 at the North Preston Lutheran Church, rural Lake Preston, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. Len was born on the 14th of August, 1944 in Arlington, SD, the third of six children born to Donald and Ruby Spilde. Len was a witty, kind, gentle man blessed with many artistic talents including a gift for creating amazing food and woodworking.

Len began his career as a chef in Chicago, eventually owning successful restaurants in S. Sioux City, NE and Sioux Falls, SD. He married Judy Spilde on October 30, 1974. They enjoyed a thirty year marriage, raising four children. Len and Judy were avid golfers and travellers.

Len was preceded in death by Judy, his beloved wife, and his siblings Rodney Spilde and Donalyn Sour.

Len is survived by his children Daniel (Terri) Spilde of San Antonio, TX, Kimberley (Wesley) Willuweit of Dell Rapids, SD, Lori Spilde of Houston, TX, and Jody (Kimberley) Spilde of Kearney, NE; siblings Julie Carlson, of Brookings, SD, Reggie (Judy) Spilde of Manteno, IL, and Shauna (Jerry) Clanton of Omaha, NE; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Jennifer (Betsworth) Donaldson

Jennifer DonaldsonJennifer Donaldson, 40, of Sioux Falls passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at her home. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the start of the service. Jennifer Ann Betsworth was born on January 9, 1973 in Sioux Falls, SD, the daughter of Mary Jane and Dan Betsworth. She grew up in Crooks and attended Tri-Valley High School. In May of 1994, she married Jamie Donaldson. For many years she worked at Interstate Audit. The last few years she worked at Egger Steel.

Jenny enjoyed music, reading, and watching movies. She relished time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, MJ Betsworth, grandparents and great aunt and uncle.

She is survived by her two sons, Orion of Dell Rapids and Jacob of Sioux Falls; her two daughters, Haley of Dell Rapids and Emily of Sioux Falls; her brother, Chris (Barb) Betsworth of Sioux Falls and her nephews, Matt and Sam; her niece, Lauren; her uncle, Howard Marquardt and her aunt, Suzzanne (Joe) Fueling.

Mary Lu (Schwartz) Geraets

Mary Lu GeraetsMary Lu Geraets, 86, of Estelline, SD and formerly of Brookings, SD passed away Monday, August 12, 2013 at Estelline Nursing and Care Center, Estelline, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am Saturday, August 17, 2013 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Estelline, SD. Visitation will be Friday, August 16, 2013 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Estelline, SD, with a Liturgical Wake Service to follow at 7:00pm. Mary Lu Schwartz daughter of Ed and Clara (Crowell) Schwartz was born July 1, 1927, in Volga, SD. When Mary Lu was 11 years old her mother passed away, leaving her to help care for her younger brothers and worked on the farm where she grew up southeast of Lake Oakwood. She attended Country School and graduated from Volga High School in 1945. After graduation, she stayed and continued to assist on the family farm for 4 years until moving to Sioux falls where she worked as a housekeeper/nanny for the Hurwitz family.

Mary Lu married Vincent Geraets on June 25, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids, SD. They resided in Dell Rapids for a short time before moving to Mobridge, SD and resided there for over 50 years.

Mary Lu worked as an office clerk for Montana Dakota Utilities for 35 years, retiring on January 1, 1990. While living in Mobridge, Mary Lu was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She was involved with the Catholic Daughters of America, the Altar Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Jaycettes and Women of the Moose Lodge. She also belonged to the Montana Dakota Utility Company Retired Group and the Red Hatters.

Mary Lu enjoyed gardening, yard work, cooking, canning, bowling and playing bridge. She especially loved her flower garden.

Vince and Mary Lu moved to Brookings in 2005 where they resided at Brookhaven Estates. In August of 2012, Vince and Mary Lu moved to the Estelline Nursing and Care Center and where she resided until her death.

Mary Lu is survived by her husband Vince of 60 years of Estelline, SD; her brother, Ralph (Donna Jean) of Estelline, SD; a sister-in-law, Darlene of Brookings, SD and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara and Ed; a brother, Robert; two half brothers, Harold and Walter and a step-mother, Anna Mae.

Stella “Dot” White

Stella WhiteStella “Dot” White, 87, of Dell Rapids passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center. Her funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at the Kahler Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery. Stella was born on July 19, 1926 at Bushnell, South Dakota, the daughter of Joseph and Cora Belle (Heinrich) Houg. She grew and attended school in the Bushnell, Sinai and White areas. She moved with her family to Hartford. She met and married Marvin Steineke on April 22, 1944 in Hartford. The couple made their home in Hartford and later Sioux Falls. To this union their six children were born. She married Kenneth White on September 2, 1972 at Sioux Valley Baptist Church, rural Dell Rapids. They made their home in Trent. Kenneth passed away on June 19, 1995. Stella remained in Trent until she became a resident of the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids in 2011.

She was a member of the Sioux Valley Baptist Church and Ladies Aid. She took great pride in cleaning and mowing the church for many years.

Stella was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her granddaughter, Georgia Ament, her son-in-law, Dan Edwards, her two brothers and a sister.

She is survived by her sons, Fred (Mabel) Steineke of Sioux Falls and Randy (Elaine) Steineke of Trent; her daughters, Dixie (Kenny) Hinrichs of Sioux Falls, Ruth Edwards of Rowena, Karen (Merle) Henry of Renner and Bonnie (Chris) Almont); her 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; her brother, Darrell (Shirley) Houg of Eagle Grove, MN and Shirley Pottratz of Tucson, AZ.

Marjorie Croisant-Hoines-Viereck

Marjorie Lois Croisant-Hoines-Viereck, of Dell Rapids, was excited to see Jesus on August 7, 2013 at the age of 71 after a short stay at the Sanford Hospice in Sioux Falls. Her peaceful death began with the failure of her kidneys which was preceded by many years of health complications.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Minnehaha Funeral Home Chapel in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Ramona Protestant Cemetery, Ramona, SD.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Marge was born June 20, 1942 in Madison, South Dakota. She grew up with her two parents and six siblings in Ramona, attending a one-room school house, and graduated from Madison High School. On June 30, 1962 Marge married Magnus C. Hoines. She raised her five children in Hartford, South Dakota where she owned the B&E Cafe. On September 6, 1975 Marge married Donald Viereck. Later, she lived in Sioux Falls, working at Walmart and then retired in Dell Rapids. Marge enjoyed playing Pitch and Keno, having coffee with friends, and reading.

Thankful to God for sharing her life are her sisters, Lila (Mel) Folz, Carol (Ed Miller) VonBehren-Miller, Judy (Harley) Englebrecht; brothers, David (Barb) Croisant and James (Debra) Croissant; children, Mark (Machelle) Hoines of Yankton, Machelle (David) Koch of Sioux Falls, LtCol Mitchell Hoines (Cindy Jorgensen) of Kansas, Marnie (Craig) Hansen of Dell Rapids and Mary Ashmore of Tea. Marge had 12 grandchildren.

Benjamin Heeney

Benjamin P. Heeney, 21, of Beatrice died on August 6, 2013 at rural Beatrice, NE. He was born on March 28, 1992 at Sioux Falls, SD and graduated from high school in Madison, SD in 2010. He lived in Madison, Rapid City and Sioux Falls and worked as a plumber. He was attending St. Nicholas Catholic Church of Tea, SD. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing chess, reading and spending time with his young cousins.

Survivors include his father, Dan Heeney of Beatrice; mother, Misty Puleo of Gothenburg; two brothers, Treavor Heeney of Beatrice and D.J. Heeney and wife Kristin of Moses Lake, WA; one niece, Kayla; one nephew, Daniel; grandfather, James H. Payne of Dodge; grandmother, Geraldine N. Payne-Phillips of Dodge; special uncle and aunt, Pat and Deb Henney of Tea, SD; several aunts and uncles, Paul and Michelle Payne of Dodge, Scott Payne of Clear Lake, CA, Sarah and Mickey Schroeder of Liberty and LaRita Bray of Beatrice; special cousins, Mike and Erin Heeney and their children, Colin and Griffin, Sean and Molly Heeney and their children, Brooklyn, Kyla, Jordan and Carter, all of Tea, SD and Tony and Anna Heeney of Dell Rapids, SD.

Ethel Risty

Ethel Mae Risty, 91, of Sioux Falls, passed away at Good Samaritan Lutheran Manor on August 2, 2013.

Ethel was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on September 6, 1921, to Charles and Bessie Dirks. Ethel graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1939 and went to work at John Morrell & Co. She married Thomas G. Risty on April 8, 1944, at East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Following her employment at John Morrell & Co., Ethel worked for the Minnehaha County Court Services as Secretary to Judge William Heuermann until her retirement.

Ethel was an active member of East Side Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Ethel was also a lifelong member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, serving terms as the local and state President. She was a member of the Harrisburg American Legion Auxiliary, and was also active with United Commercial Travelers for many years. Ethel enjoyed a variety of hobbies, such as music, playing cards with her family and friends, sewing and cross-stitching and, most of all, her beautiful flowers.

Ethel is preceded in death by her husband, Tom, her parents Charles and Bessie Dirks, five brothers, Richard Dirks, Howard Dirks, Calvin Dirks Herbert Dirks and Alfred Dirks, and two sisters, Margaret Dirks and Lois Huisman. She is survived by her sister Helen Larson and brother Warren Dirks, of Harrisburg, SD, one daughter, Roxanne Patzlaff (Morris), sons Ronald (Lynn) Risty, Roger (Julie) Risty, all of Sioux Falls, and Robert (Brenda) Risty of Dell Rapids. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, including Carmen Fisher, Jacob (Noelle) Egge, Brett Egge, Justin Egge, Jamelle Moen, Janece Risty, Angela (Chris) Northrop, Jalona (Rick) Gillette, Jeremy (Becca) Risty, Brittany Risty, Ondrea Patzlaff and Karissa (Mike) Haddican, 13 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to her special caregiver Colleen Miles, Sanford Hospice and the great staff at Good Samaritan Luther Manor, whose kindness and special care were of great comfort to her.

Visitation will be held at George Boom Funeral Home on Monday, August 5, 2013, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at East Side Lutheran Church on Tuesday August 6, at 10:00 a.m., with interment following at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to South Dakota Special Olympics and Outlaw Ranch/Lutherans Outdoors.

Galen Brown

Galen Brown was born in Council Bluffs, IA and spent most of his childhood in Sioux Falls and Dell Rapids, SD. He served valiantly in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was awarded a Purple Heart. Galen earned Bachelor degrees and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of South Dakota. Galen was a practicing artist and worked for many years out of his Northeast Minneapolis studio. An intellectual wit, Galen heartily enjoyed sitting with family and friends, talking into the wee hours. He instilled in his children a love of art, travel, books, good food, and music (notably Bob Dylan). Preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

He is survived by his wife, Souane; children, Melissa (John) Sullivan, Jessica, Zina (Kai), Phou (Joshua) Cameron, and Poonoy Chanthavongsa; grandchildren, Molly, Jasper, Kaila, and Zander; brothers, Kelly (Lois), Charles (Paula), and Larry; sisters, Lois (Donald) Christensen, Judy (Marty) Skar, and Linda (Alan) Ljunggren; nieces and nephews.

Galen is fondly remembered by Sharon Kay Gannon, Kay Adkins Brown and many loving family and friends.

There will be a Graveside Service at 1 PM Tuesday, August 6th at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Please meet at Assembly Area #2 at 12:45PM.

Jim Dorris

James A. Dorris, 60, of Huron, died on Friday, July 26, 2013. 

His memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron.  Visitation with the family present will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.  Burial of his cremated remains will be held at a later date.  Visit www.welterfuneralhome.com to leave condolences. 

James A. Dorris was born to Alfred and Beulah (Hornback) Dorris on May 23, 1953, in Mitchell.  He attended school and graduated from Huron High School. He worked as a foreman for Groves Construction for 30 years. He also worked for 12 years for Western Area Power as a construction representative before his retirement.

He married Lois Mastel on June 5, 1980, in Huron.  

He was a member of the North American Hunting Club, Ducks Unlimited, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, drag racing and working on cars.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Huron; two sons, Daniel (Alicia Fjeldhein) Dorris, of Dell Rapids and Jade Morgan of Texarkana, Texas;  two grandchildren; Donna Dosch; seven brothers, Rick Dorris, Wynn (Maria) Dorris and David (Mary) Dorris, all of Huron, Don (Peggy) Dorris of Tulare, and Greg, Mark, and Todd Summers ; six sisters, Sandy (Darrin) Story of Huron, Vicky (Kevin) Slunecka of Everly, Iowa, Nickie Dorris of Huron, Heather Summers, Jackie Summers and Carol; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Michael.
