First American Cancer Society Relay For Life Run 5k and Kids’ Relay Race a Success

April 25, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

Dell Rapids – April 25, 2013 – The past weekend’s first ever American Cancer Society Relay For Life® Run 5k and Kids’ Relay Race raised just over $500 to support the Society’s mission of saving lives from cancer, leaving volunteers and some runners a bit chilly, but happy, at Dell Rapids City Park on Saturday morning.

“By coming out to run or walk on an unseasonably cold April morning, the participants certainly did their part to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” said LuAnn Heidebrink, volunteer for the 2013 Relay For Life. “We hope they had some fun and plan to come back to the Park to the Relay For Life event we’re planning for July.”

Twenty-six runners and walkers participated in the 5k, which followed the bike trail and ended in the Park.  The Kids’ Relay Race saw twenty-eight area children registered on seven teams racing around the Park.

“More than 4,300 people in our state will face a cancer diagnosis this year,” said Heidebrink. “It’s critical that we come together during events like this run and at Relay to help the American Cancer Society achieve its mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.”

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Dell Rapids is planned for July 26-27, 2013, at the Dell Rapids City Park.  To learn more about Relay For Life, visit www.RelayForLife.org or call 361-8277.

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 12 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.

DRSM Girls Basketball Team Earns SDHSAA Academic Achievement Team Award

April 17, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

With the completion of all the SDHSAA winter fine arts and athletic activities, the SDHSAA announces that 485 teams have received the “Academic Achievement Team Awards” for the 2012-2013 Winter Season. All varsity fine arts groups and athletic teams that achieve a combined grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible to receive the SDHSAA ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT TEAM AWARD.

Initiated during the 1996-97 school year, the SDHSAA ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT TEAM AWARD program is designed to recognize varsity athletic teams and fine arts groups for their academic excellence.  The South Dakota High School Activities Association believes that high school students learn in two distinct ways; inside the classroom and outside the classroom – on the stage and/or athletic field. This academic program creates a positive environment for school teams to have its members excel in the classroom. This program is also meant to motivate students toward academic excellence and to promote academic encouragement from teammates.

All varsity athletic teams and fine arts groups that participate in Association sponsored activities are eligible for this recognition program. Based on a duplicated count, as reported in the 2011-12 SDHSAA Participation Survey, over 29,789 students participate in interscholastic athletics and over 28,613 more are involved in fine arts activities. The Academic Team Award program provides high school students with the opportunity to prove they can be overwhelmingly successful in both academics as well as in athletic and fine arts activities.

This information is also available on the SDHSAA Website (www.sdhsaa.com). Click on “Awards & Honors”, then “Academic Achievement”.

Dell Rapids Columnist Receives Ducks Unlimited National Award

April 13, 2013 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

John Pollman receiving the Communications award during DU’s Wetland Achievement Awards ceremony.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – April 1, 2013 – Ducks Unlimited announced today the winners of the 2013 Wetland Conservation Achievement Awards during the 78th North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference held in Arlington, Va., at the Crystal Gateway Hyatt. This year’s recipient in the Communications category is freelance writer John Pollmann of Dell Rapids.

Pollmann’s writing specialties include habitat conservation, public access, hunting heritage and agricultural policy issues affecting the Prairie Pothole Region in his home state of South Dakota.

“John is a regular contributor to The Argus Leader newspaper in Sioux Falls and also provides a bimonthly report for the Minnesota Outdoor News,” said DU Chief Conservation Officer Paul Schmidt. “Through his writing and radio shows, John has captivated audiences and engaged sportsmen and women on key issues influencing the future of habitat resources, wildlife populations and our hunting traditions.”

A 2012 recipient of the John Madson Fellowship from the Outdoor Writers Association of America, Pollmann’s stories have been published in national magazines such as Field & Stream, Ducks Unlimited and American Waterfowler. He is also the former host of Dakota Outdoors Radio, an hour-long weekly show that featured hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor recreational opportunities in South Dakota.

“As the waterfowl columnist for Aberdeen’s American News Outdoor Forum, John has a keen interest in waterfowl hunting and conservation,” said Eric Lindstrom, DU’s government affairs representative for the Great Plains region.

“His recent publications on wetland loss, native prairie conversion and farm bill policy have helped raise greater awareness and engagement among the conservation community and policy makers. John has been a true conservation champion and a voice for sportsmen on these issues.”

Pollmann was also recently made a member of the nation’s first-ever conservation pro staff for the new Vanishing Paradise initiative, on which DU is a partner. Through his volunteer position with the organization, Pollmann will help raise greater public awareness about efforts to protect and rebuild the coastal marshes of Louisiana.

Ducks Unlimited Inc. is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. Established in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 13 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever. For more information on our work, visit www.ducks.org. Connect with us on our Facebook page at facebook.com/DucksUnlimited, follow our tweets at twitter.com/DucksUnlimited and watch DU videos at youtube.com/DucksUnlimitedInc.
