LittleQuarrierTrack-2015

Hundreds of students in grades K-6 participated in the 2015 Little Quarrier Track Clinic held at the Dell Rapids High School this year.  The clinic ran on three consecutive Mondays starting on April 13th and ending on April 27th.  The students received instruction from current Dell Rapids High School track coaches and athletes.  They worked on long jump, sprinting, starting blocks, hand offs, high jump, hurdles, shot put, discus, and relays during the three afternoons at the track.

Dell Rapids varsity girls track coach Mike Putnam said, “The ‘Meet Me at the Track’ Little Quarrier Track Camp was a lot of fun this year. We had over 200 little tracksters attend over the course of three different Monday’s.  This is a great opportunity for our young Quarriers to work with are varsity athletes and coaches and to see how fun being part of the track team really is.”

Dells Nursing and Rehab Center Adding Baseball Field

April 16, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

DNRCBaseballField-2015Dell Rapids is getting a new baseball field.  Dells Nursing and Rehab Center is doing work to the northwest corner of their proper so baseball or softball can be played in that spot.

Chad Stroschein, owner of Dells Nursing and Rehab Center, approached the Dell Rapids Little League about the idea of creating this field in the open space by the facility last year after the baseball season had ended.  He noticed the difficulties in finding field time for the 30 to 40 youth baseball (ages 6-12), softball (ages 6-14), and T-ball (ages 4-5) teams Dell Rapids has every year.  The idea was met with excitement by all the board members.  As spring time approached, Stroschein, also a Dell Rapids Little League board member, again brought up the plans to make the space a playable field.

Work has been ongoing since the snow melt to get the field ready to go by the time youth baseball and softball seasons start at the end of May.  The extra field space will be used by Dell Rapids youth teams along with fields A, B and C at city park on the north side of the river, fields E and F on the south side of the river, Brown Park, and the St Mary field just east of St Mary School.

Not only will this help the youth leagues, it will be an added bonus to the residents who will be able to watch games all summer long, which Stroschein said they will enjoy all season.

Dell Rapids School Amends End of School Date

April 14, 2015 by Matt Larson, Big Sioux Media

EndofSchool-2015The Dell Rapids School Board amended the last day of school for the 2014-2015 school year during their regular meeting on Monday, April 13th.  The original last day of school was scheduled for Thursday, May 21st, at 1:00 p.m.  However, the school district lost three days of school time during the year, one to weather and two due to state tournaments.

Superintendent Dr. Summer Schultz made the recommendation to make up a day and a half of the three days missed.  Her proposal was to have the last day of school be amended to Friday, May 22nd, at 3:18 p.m.  She said, “Have the kids come a full day on Thursday and Friday, instead of having the half day early release.  And then only have staff make up the contract days that following Tuesday and Wednesday after Memorial Day, so you would only be losing a day and a half of student time.  Then teachers would fulfill their contract.  We would be able to use some of our nine state training days we have coming to us with the lack of days for in-service.  We haven’t been able to use many of those.”

Schultz also told the school board that the state does not make the district count the days/hours missed due to early release because of weather emergencies.

“So your recommendation is of the three days, we make up a day and a half, which would run us up to the end of the day, full day on Friday, the 22nd, right before the Memorial Day weekend and not bring the students back after Memorial Day. I think that’s probably the most logical based on the calendar that we have, rather than trying to bring them back on Tuesday or Wednesday whether it be for a day or day and a half,” board president Tom Morris said.

The proposal passed by a 3-1 vote.

The final day of school will now be Friday, May 22nd, at 3:18 p.m.
