4th Annual Relay for Life Run Held in Dell Rapids

The 4th Annual Relay for Life Run was held at the the Dell Rapids City Park on Saturday, April 23rd. Over 100 participants ran in the 5k, 10k, mile walk and kid’s relay throughout the morning. The 10k race started at 9:00, and the 5k/mile walk started at 9:30. The kid’s relay race started at 11:00.

All the proceeds raised during the event went to the Dell Rapids Relay for Life team. Not only did this year’s event continue to raise money for cancer research, but also contained many personal accomplishments. Will Beover, who is blind, participated in this year’s event after training for months at Revive Fitness. He was led along the route by Lee Bollock. Others in this year’s race completed their very first 5k as well.

Ben Hammer does it again!

For the second week in a row, Ben Hammer has been named Great Plains Athletic Conference field athlete of the week, after strong performances in the 2016 Sioux City Relays in Sioux City, Iowa held April 11-17, 2016 . Ben qualified for the NAIA National Championships in the shot put after qualifying last week in the discus. He finished third in the shot put with a toss of 15.60 meters to qualify for nationals. In the discus, he took fourth place Saturday with a throw of 48.08 meters, besting all throwers from the NAIA level.

DR School Board Approves Planning for New HS Trip

The Dell Rapids School Board approved authorization of plans to move forward with a new trip planned for high school students to Washington, D.C. during their regular meeting on Monday, April 11th. The trip idea was proposed by teachers Mr. Shriver and Mr. Welbig.

High School Principal Dr. Kludt mentioned to the board that the trip would occur every four years starting in the spring of 2017 and would be open to all high school students who participate in a U.S. History course. Dr. Kludt also said that the difference between this trip and the 8th grade trip is that the students have studied more history and would be more interested in learning more of the finer points. The anticipation is that more juniors and seniors will be interested in this trip.

Students would have to pay for the trip, but fundraisers would be held as much as possible to help the students fund the trip.

The travel company being used for the trip is World Strides.

Ben Hammer is GPAC’s Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week

Ben Hammer of Dakota Wesleyan is this week’s Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference’s track & field athlete-of-the-week. Hammer, a freshman from Dell Rapids, South Dakota, set a school record, while picking up strong finishes in three events. Hammer placed first in the men’s shot put with a toss of 50′ 2¾”, while adding an eighth-place showing in the hammer throw with a toss of 118′ 6″. His record performance came in the discus with a throw of 169′ 9″, eclipsing the DWU school record by 11 feet. Hammer finished second in the event, qualifying for the NAIA national meet.

River Community Church Celebrates 10 Years

On Sunday, April 10th, River Community Church celebrated 10 years as a church with an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. that included free hotdogs and hamburgers, inflatables, a kids craft, and an opportunity for community members to explore improvements made to their building.

River Community Church ministry highlights over the last 10 years include planting Christ Fellowship in Baltic and helping plant Cornerstone Community Church in Brandon, being able to train five different pastors through their “student pastor” program, seeing many volunteers step into their first church leadership positions, making quarterly mission trips to Fort Thompson, participating in many community events, seeing numerous people express their faith in Jesus Christ through baptism, and seeing a group of people form into a loving church family.

River Community Church held their first public service on Easter, March 26th, 2006 in the gym of the elementary school. After about year, the church purchased and renovated the building at 406 East 4th Street that had previously been Pizza Ranch and is now currently Blooms on Main. After 7+ years in their 4th street location, River Community Church outgrew their space and purchased the old elementary school building, returning to their original worship facility.

River Community Church has made many improvements to their new building and grounds, including updating the kitchen, updating the fire alarm system, replacing doors, changing light fixtures, improving the landscaping, adding signage, painting, decorating, plumbing, and electric work. Future improvements include making changes to the sanctuary space, widening the entrance to the parking lot, and increasing the foyer area.

Highway 115 Construction Begins

The South Dakota Department of Transportation began work on a reconstruction project for Highway 115 and to replace a bridge over the Big Sioux River just south of Dell Rapids on Monday, April 4th. Once the bridge is removed during the project, traffic on Highway 115 from Centennial Place to Quarry Road will be detoured to 3rd Street to Garfield Avenue to Centennial Place. Signs will be in place to direct the traffic.

The entire reconstruction part of the project on Highway 115 also includes grading, storm sewer, structure work, and concrete pavement surfacing from Quarry Road to 248th Street. Traffic will be maintained through this portion of the project, however, motorists are encouraged to use the suggested detour of Minnehaha County Highway 114 (250th Street) to Interstate 29 (Baltic Exit 94) to Highway 115 (Dell Rapids Exit 98).

The anticipated completion of the $8.3 million project is early November. The prime contractor for the project is Reede Construction, Inc. of Aberdeen, SD.

Dell Rapids St Mary Recognized as an “Outstanding Student Council”

The South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) recently announced that 30 South Dakota high school student councils have been recognized as being “Outstanding Student Councils” for the 2015-16 school year. This is the 26th year that this statewide program has been sponsored by the SDHSAA to recognize those South Dakota high school student council’s that meet or exceed the rigorous standards of excellence that are necessary to achieve the “Outstanding Student Council” designation. “Outstanding Councils” excel in having a well-rounded program of activities and projects for the year. The work completed by these “Outstanding Student Councils” has been a benefit to both their school and their community throughout the school year.

The major focus of the “SDHSAA Outstanding Student Council” program consists of each participating student council completing a self-evaluation of their organizational structure and their successful completion of projects in a variety of areas. The evaluation also considers the involvement of the student council in their school and community. It is the intention of the High School Activities Association to recognize those student councils that meet the stringent standards and criteria demanded by this program. The thirty student councils that have been recognized with this year’s ‘Outstanding’ designation are each well organized and highly motivated. These student councils have met the rigorous standards necessary to be called ‘Outstanding’. The self-evaluation focuses upon the structure of the student council as well as the positive involvement of the student council in the activities of their school and community.

To be recognized as an “Outstanding Student Council” every council was involved in various projects in the areas of “Community and School Service”, “Health, Safety or Chemical Awareness”, “Education”, “Leadership” and others. Completion of projects in a wide range of areas was necessary to fulfill a variety of goals for the student council. Each school receiving the “SDHSAA Outstanding Student Council” award has demonstrated a desire for self-improvement and individual growth by participating in leadership workshops and conventions as well as other educational programs.

Some of the projects the Dell Rapids St Mary Student Council has completed this year include:
~ planning and organizing all Homecoming activities, along with Olympic Games & a Powder Puff Football game
~ sponsoring dress up days for Red Ribbon Week
~ hosting two dances during the year
~ organizing Secret Santa during Christmas
~ organized an Elf for a Day contest to raise money for Christmas for our Kids
~ host a Pajamarama for the elementary students during Catholic Schools Week
~ sponsor a week long food drive during Catholic Schools Week for the local food pantry
~ have Brownie Sundae fundraisers to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network
~ run a lunch stand and had a hoop shoot contest during basketball games to raise money for a new water fountain for our school
~ provided free babysitting & worked in the concession stands during our SFO fall craft fair
~ sponsor activities for Alcohol Awareness during Prom Week
~ provide gifts to our teachers during teacher appreciation week

Dell Rapids Carnegie Library Hosts Sioux Falls Storm

A player and cheerleader for the Sioux Falls Storm indoor football team traveled to the Dell Rapids Carnegie Library for an event on Wednesday, March 30th. The Sioux Falls Storm have been doing this outreach program with the Sioux Falls libraries for a few years, but according to Library Director Brittany Moeller this was the first time that they have visited a library outside of Sioux Falls. The two read stories to around 115 children who attended the event. Afterwards they signed autographs and talked with those who attended.

Moeller said, “Since this program was such a success, it is definitely something we would love to do again in the future.”

The library’s next big event is the Summer Reading Program. Sign up will begin in May and the programs and reading will begin in June and run through July. This year’s theme is “On your mark, get set…READ!” and follows a sports and wellness/fitness theme. Moeller said that they have lots of fun activities planned for the Summer Reading Program.

Dell Rapids Chamber Partners with Haven for Field Trip

The Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Haven program to provide a field trip for the Haven students on Monday, March 28th. The Haven students were able to travel to Sioux Falls to watch the Sioux Falls Stampede play in a scrimmage game. The Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce donated the tickets to the event, reducing the price of the field trip to just $2.00 per child to cover transportation costs.

Each child who attended the field trip also received a free ticket to a Sioux Falls Stampede game on Sunday, April 5th.

Thirty-three Haven students and five chaperones attended the event.

Community Blood Drive Scheduled April 7

Dell Rapids, SD – Avera Dells Area Health Center and Community Blood Bank will host a spring community blood drive on Thursday, April 7 from 7:00 am to 11:00 am and 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm at Avera Dells Area Health Center.

“We are looking for all blood types to help boost the blood supply to healthy levels,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “With just one donation, a person will save up to three peoples’ lives. The entire donation process takes 30 to 40 minutes.”

To be eligible to donate you must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form found at www.cbblifeblood.org), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good general health the day of the donation. Please bring an ID with you. It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood. For additional information or to presign-up for an appointment please contact 428-5431. Walk-ins are always welcome.
