Dell Rapids Legion Baseball Team Hosts Veteran’s Night at the Ballpark

VeteransNightatBallpark_2017The Dell Rapids Legion baseball team hosted the first ever Veteran’s Night at the Ballpark prior to their game against Hartford/Humboldt on Wednesday, June 28th, at Rickeman Field in Dell Rapids.

“Tonight is a special night as we honor our veterans with our first Veteran’s Night at the Ballpark,” said Dane Stone.

Prior to the game, veterans were treated to a free meal of hamburgers or brats.  There was also a table of veteran resources available provided by 211 Helpline Center.  Steve Enos from Community Action for Veterans was also present and shared with the veterans.  The veterans were then honored with a short program prior to the start of the game and received free admission to the game.

Dell Rapids went on to defeat Hartford/Humboldt 13-3.

30th Annual Quarry Days a Big Hit in Dell Rapids

2017QuarryDays2With blue skies and near perfect temperatures in the lower 70s all weekend, the 30th Annual Dell Rapids Quarry Days was a huge success for the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce.  Some of the comments around town and on social media have praised the chamber for an outstanding weekend.

“Best Quarry Days in the 22 years we’ve lived here.  Well done!,” said one comment on Facebook. 2017QuarryDays3

Another comment on Facebook said, “A huge shout out to the Chamber.  This year’s Quarry Days was as close to perfect as it gets!”

2017QuarryDays1The Dell Rapids Chamber had a mix of classic Quarry Day events along with some new events for the 30th annual celebration.  The celebration started on Friday, June 23rd with the Quarry Days Golf Tournament.  Other classic events over the weekend included the ESA 5k Run/Walk, parade, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, vendors in the park, L.G. Everist train rides, fishing derby, “Blast from the Past” car show, and the fireworks display to close out the event on Sunday, June 25th.

Some of the newer events this year included an Ag Olympics put on by the Dell Rapids FFA, co-ed sand volleyball tournament, Dell Rapids firefighters obstacle course and smokehouse, Champions Forever Crevier basketball spectacular, and Dueling Duo. 2017QuarryDays4

This year’s street dance also featured two bands.  The Brandon Jones Band opened the street dance at 7:00 p.m., and then Judd Hoos rocked the crowed late into the night on Saturday, June 24th.  There was a near-record attendance of over 1,200 at this year’s street dance.

Dell Rapids Chamber board members have said that this year’s celebration may have been the most well-attended in recent years throughout the entire weekend of events.

Dell Rapids Community Blood Drive Scheduled July 6th

CommunityBloodBankDell Rapids, SD- Avera Dells Area Health Center and Community Blood Bank will host a community blood drive on Thursday, July 6 from 7:00am to 11:00am and 12:30pm to 2:30pm at Avera Dells Area Health Center.

“The first few weeks of summer have been difficult keeping up with demands. We have been on the edge of a critical needs appeal and are in need of all blood types to keep up the supply,” states Rita Nelson, Donor Consultant, Community Blood Bank. “As more people travel on the road and water ways throughout the summer, unexpected situations that require blood transfusions occur more frequently. Maintaining healthy blood supply levels ensures quick response to those needs within the community and allows for seasonal upswings in blood usage.”

The only way Community Blood Bank can meet the needs of the hospitals it serves is through volunteer blood donors donating blood at blood drives. Community Blood Bank uses 550 unit of blood per week to service 34 local hospitals including Avera Dells Area Health Center, Sanford Medical Center, Avera McKennan Hospital, VA Medical Center and Avera Heart Hospital.

Donors must be at least 17 years of age (16 years old with a signed parent consent form), weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health. Please bring an ID with you. It is recommended that donors eat and drink plenty of fluid prior to donating blood.

The donation process only takes 25 – 30 minutes on the bloodmobile. For appointments or more information call 428-5431 or log onto www.cbblifeblood.org. Walk-ins are welcome.

Dell Rapids Could See Additional Street Lights

DellRapidsStreetLightThe Dell Rapids City Council received a report from City Administrator Justin Weiland that the city of Dell Rapids could see additional street lights added around town.  This report came during the council’s regular meeting on Monday, June 19th.

Weiland along with Public Works Director Larry Schildhauer met with representatives from Xcel Energy to plan for the installation of the additional street lights in a few places around town.  The new 10th street project area is one area that will receive new street lights.  Quartzite Street and Garfield Avenue in the new industrial park will also receive lights.  Weiland also mentioned that a few additional lights will be put on Zero Street near Garfield Avenue and Orleans Avenue near Rickeman Field.  There are also plans to install additional lights on Highway 77 north of the four-way stop to help with darkness in these areas.

Councilman Gary Haak asked, “The electrical company pays for that, right?”

“We have some initial costs based on what infrastructure is there.  We then pay a lease fee per light,” said Weiland.

City Administration hopes to have the lights installed yet in 2017.

Dell Rapids Teacher Gets Adopt-A-Classroom Grant from Sioux Falls Federal Credit Union

Sioux Falls, June 14, 2017:  As our local school districts face increasing budget constraints, a growing number of teachers spend more of their own money to provide school supplies for their students. In a recent survey conducted by SheerID, teachers in the United States spent an average of $513 on out-of-pocket classroom supplies such as instructional materials, books and professional development.

Sioux Falls Federal Credit Union has been helping to off-set these costs since 2009 with their Adopt-A-Classroom grant program. This grant provides teachers in Lincoln, Minnehaha, McCook and Turner counties $500 to help cover necessary non-salary expenses to fund their classroom.

Sioux Falls Federal Credit Union invited the public to nominate any certified K through 12 classroom teacher who works in an accredited public or private school within the credit union’s service area to receive the Adopt-A-Classroom grant. The nomination form included a brief description on how the teacher has made an impact on their life. “We knew teachers made an impact on their students, but in reviewing all of our nomination forms, we realized all the ways our teachers create an engaging, interesting and fun classroom experience that not only benefited the student but their family,” stated Sioux Falls Federal Credit Union President/CEO Fran Sommerfeld.

The credit union has awarded six grants in the 2017-2018 school year. Grants of $500 have been awarded directly to teachers to provide them with some of the resources necessary to cover out-of-pocket expenses. “The teaching profession is one that demands dedication, commitment, and sacrifice. Most teachers often go beyond the call of duty to create a stimulating, safe learning environment and to help each student succeed. We are excited to be able to offer this program to help our teachers create an engaging, interesting, and fun classroom experience for their students” said Sommerfeld.

Jeff Broin to be honored!

SDHOFOn September 8 and 9, 2017, ten men and women who have distinguished themselves in the fields of education, the law, agriculture, business, the professions, medicine and politics are being honored as inductees into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

The mission of the South Dakota Hall of Fame is to champion a culture of excellence in South Dakota: One Act at a Time. Congratulations to Jeff Broin of Dell Rapids, on being honored in the field of agriculture and being a pioneer in worldwide biofuels.

The ceremony is open to the public and tickets can be purchased on the Hall of Fame website or by calling the Hall at 1-605-234-4216.

Since 1974, more than 700 South Dakotans have become members of the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

Dell Rapids Quarry Days Adds New Events

The 30th Annual Dell Rapids Quarry Days will feature some new events this year.  One of the new events will be “Ag Olympics” on Saturday, June 24th, hosted by the Dell Rapids FFA.  The event will start at 1:00 p.m. at city park.  Participants in this event can test their skills in various activities like steel fence post pounding, wheel barrow obstacle race, and square bale toss.

Other new events for this year’s Quarry Days include a coed sand volleyball tournament (Saturday), The Brandon Jones Band opening for Judd Hoos at the street dance (Saturday), Champions Forever Crevier Basketball Spectacular (Sunday), and Dueling Duo at the band shell (Sunday).

Quarry Days will start on Friday, June 23rd, with the Quarry Days Golf Tournament and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” later on Friday evening.  The celebration will conclude on Sunday, June 25th, with a fireworks display at 10:00 p.m.  The 30th Annual Quarry Days is put on by the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce and proudly sponsored by Billion, GoldenWest, LG Everist, and Dells Auto.

Campground Expansion Continues to Move Forward

CampgroundExpansionUpdateThe Dell Rapids City Council heard that the campground expansion and comfort station plans are moving forward and still plan to be completed in 2017 during their last regular meeting on Monday, June 5th.

City Administrator Just Weiland reported to the council that the city has received clearance from the Corp of Engineers that the area for the campground expansion (just south of Rickeman Field in the old tractor pull area) will be removed from their wetland maps.  The next step is for DGR to proceed with issuing a FEMA No-Rise Certificate for the area.  Once the city receives that analysis, they will know how to proceed with elevations for utility placements and then installation can begin.

Weiland also reported that structural plans for the new comfort station.  Administration is still waiting for the final electrical, plumbing, and mechanical plans for the new building.  Once those plans are received, the city will be able to put the project out for bid.

“We should be able to go out to bid in the next week or two,” said Weiland.

Administration is still targeting to have the campground expansion and comfort station projects completed by the fall of 2017.

10th Street Project Now Complete

10thStreetCompleteDuring the Dell Rapids City Council’s last regular meeting on Monday, June 5th, the council received the news that the 10th street project was substantially complete.  The street was opened to traffic starting on Friday, June 2nd.  The final walk-thru of the project took place on Tuesday, June 6th.

Dell Rapids Mayor Tom Earley said, “I think right now would be very appropriate on my part to recognize the fact that 10th street wouldn’t maybe be there if it hadn’t been for Mr. Geraets and Mr. Crisp.  We appreciate the initiative they took and the work you guys did to get it going.  It’s a very visible project in town…  They’ve done a nice job up there and it looks nice.”

The entire project included utility work, drainage, sidewalk, curb and gutter, driveway approach updates, and a new asphalt road between Orchard Hills and Iowa Ave.

With the completion of the project, the council approved a pay request from T&R Contracting on the project.

New Temporary Truck Route Approved

TruckRouteChangesThe Dell Rapids City Council approved a new truck route agreement with the South Dakota Department of Transportation at their last regular meeting on Monday, May 15th.  The new truck route will be put in place temporarily during the construction happening at Exit 98 (Dell Rapids interchange) of Interstate 29.

The temporary truck route will run on Garfield Ave from 4th St to Quartzite St.  Trucks will then be able to gain access to Hwy 115 from Quartzite St.

As part of the agreement, dust control will also be maintained on Garfield Ave from Centennial Place to Quartzite St.  Garfield Ave will be replaced to its current condition after the the truck use is completed.

The motion was made by Alderman Mike Geraets to accept the agreement and seconded by Alderman Gary Haak.  The motion passed.
