Watchdog Girls Suffer Home Loss to Start Season

The Beresford Watchdog girls basketball team hosted the Dell Rapids Quarriers to start the 2024-2025 season on Saturday, December 7th.  Despite holding a five-point lead with two minutes to go in the game, the Watchdogs fell by a score of 48-46.

The Watchdogs trailed 12-11 with 1:40 to go in the opening quarter, but rallied to a 16-12 lead by quarter’s end.  Dell Rapids went on a 4-0 run to start the second quarter to tie the score 16-16.  Beresford finished the rest of the quarter on a 6-2 scoring advantage to lead 22-18 at halftime.

The Watchdogs were able to extend their lead to a game-high nine points, 31-22, with 3:45 to go in the third quarter.  The Quarriers cut the lead to 36-34 by the end of the quarter.  Beresford responded with a 4-0 run to start the fourth quarter for a 40-34 lead with 5:00 to go.  Dell Rapids pulled within a point, 40-39, over the next minute.  The Watchdogs went on a 6-2 run with 2:15 to go to take a 46-41 lead after two made three-point shots by Harley Koth.  Dell Rapids tied the game, 46-46, with :30 to play.  They got the ball back after a turnover and made the game-winning shot with just :03 left on the clock.

Beresford finished the game shooting 29% (15-52) overall, 25% (4-16) on three-point shots, and 55% (12-22) from the free-throw line.  Dell Rapids finished the game shooting 39% (19-49) overall, 40% (6-15) on three-point shots, and 36% (4-11) from the free-throw line.

Ella Merriman had 20 points, four rebounds, and seven steals.  Koth finished with 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals.  Hanah Colford had four points and four rebounds.  Kendra Ellis added four points, three rebounds, and three steals.
