The Baltic 14U baseball team finished fifth at the 2025 South Dakota VFW Charlie Division State Tournament in Volga held Friday, August 8th through Sunday, August 10th. They played two pool-play games on Friday, a bracket game on Saturday, and then the placement game on Sunday. Baltic finished with an overall record of 1-3 on the weekend.
Mt Vernon/Plankinton 7, Baltic 4
In the first pool-play game on Friday, Mt Vernon/Plankinton scored seven runs early and held off Baltic for the win. They scored two runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the bottom of the second for the 7-0 lead. Baltic scored three times in the top of the fourth, but they were only able to get one run in the top of the fifth.
Oliver Nedved had two hits, one a double, and an RBI. Michael Grunewaldt and Brody Aspass had a single and an RBI each. Braeden Turner and Braden Breece both had one hit each.
Salem 10, Baltic 1
In the second pool-play game of the day, Hyaden Sundermann had an RBI ground out in the bottom of the first inning to give Baltic a 1-0 lead. Salem grabbed the lead in the second with three runs. They added five more in the top of the third and two in the top of the fifth for the 10-1 score.
Brody Hansen, Laken Kortemeyer, Nedved, and Ayden Oschner all had one hit each. Sundermann finished with an RBI.
Corsica/Stickney 7, Baltic 4
Baltic faced Corsica/Stickney in their first bracket game on Saturday. Corsica/Stickney took the lead, 1-0, with a run in the bottom of the first. Grunewaldt had an RBI single in the top of the second to tie the game 1-1. Corsica/Stickney, however, scored a run in the second, three in the third, and another in the fourth for a 6-1 lead. Each team scored a run in the fifth inning. Baltic tried to put together a rally. Grunewaldt had an RBI single in the top of the sixth, and Laken Kortemeyer had an RBI ground out in the top of the seventh, but a double-play ended the game.
Grunewaldt had two hits and two RBIs. Turner also had two hits. Kortemeyer added a single and two RBIs. Hansen and Nedved both had a single.
Baltic 9, Webster 4
In the 5th/6th place game on Sunday, Baltic took the lead for good in the third inning. Each team scored a run in the first inning for a 1-1 tie. Webster got two runs in the top of the second. Baltic responded with one run, and Webster led 3-2. Baltic would then score three runs in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and another in the sixth for a 9-3 lead. Webster scored one more time in the top of the seventh.
Hansen, Sundermann, and Grunewald all had two hits and an RBI each. Turner and Breece both had a single with an RBI. Nedved had a single, and L. Kortemeyer had an RBI. Grunewaldt pitched four innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Nedved pitched two innings and allowed a hit with four walks and two strikeouts. Maddex Klein threw one inning and allowed an unearned run on a hit and walk with one strikeout.
