Quarriers Win on Senior Night

DellRapidsFootballLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarrier football team defeated the Tri-Valley Mustangs 13-6 on Senior Night on Friday, October 18th.  The Quarriers started the game off with a bang as Zach Schroeder took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to give Dell Rapids an early 6-0 lead.  That score would hold until 11:44 to go in the fourth quarter as both defenses played very tough.  The Mustangs got the tying touchdown from Nick Buchmann on a 15-yard run to tie the game at 6-6.  The Mustangs would come close to taking the lead in the fourth quarter.  Tri-Valley had the ball two more times inside the Quarrier 20 yard line, but the Dell Rapids defense held tough both times and forced turnover on downs.  The Quarriers took over with :33 left in the game and drove down to the Mustang 32 yard line with :13 left.  On a 3rd and 12, Riley Schmidt hit Beau Carpenter with a halfback pass for the game-winning touchdown with :06 left in the game.

Dell Rapids finished the game with a total of 198 yards, 161 yards rushing and 37 yards passing, and only nine first downs.  Jacob Huewe carried the ball six times for 70 yards in the game.  Riley Schmidt had 17 carries for 64 yards.  Brett Nichols had eight carries for 19 yards.  Schmidt was 2-2 passing for 37 yards and a touchdown.  Carpenter finished with one catch for 32 yards and a touchdown.  Zach White also had a catch for five yards.

Defensively, Dell Rapids was led by Andrew Wiebenga with 10 tackles, two of those for a loss, and 1.5 sacks.  Trey VanderPlaats had eight tackles, 2.5 of those for loss.  Brock Reinhiller also had eight tackles, 1.5 of those for loss.  Cody Nielsen had 7.5 tackles in the game, three for a loss.

Dell Rapids improves to 5-2 on the year.  The Quarriers will finish the regular season in Vermillion on Thursday, October 24th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Two Quarrier Runners Qualify for State

Quarrier LogoTwo Dell Rapids Quarrier cross country runners will be participating in the State Meet on Saturday, October 26th.  Lexi Snyder and Zane Schumaker finished in the top 20 on Thursday, October 17th, at the Region 2A Meet held in Flandreau.  The Dell Rapids girls finished seventh as a team with a total of 103 points.  Madison won the girls event with 30 points, followed by Garretson with 34 points and West Central with 47 points.  The Quarrier boys finished sixth with a total of 110 points.  Garretson won the event with 30 points, followed by West Central with 36 points and Flandreau with 40 points.

Fund Set up for Injured Teen

Dylan LesselyoungA fund has been set up for Dylan Lesselyoung at Wells Fargo Bank in Dell Rapids.  Lesselyoung was severely injured in a roll-over crash on Tuesday, October 8th.  He was ejected from the vehicle when it rolled over.  His neck broke in several places in the accident.  Currently Lesselyoung has no feeling or movement below the shoulders.  He has undergone two surgeries so far in Sioux Falls, but now needs to be transferred to Craig’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado.  Craig’s Hospital specializes in rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries.  He could be in Denver anywhere from three to nine months.  Lesselyoung’s mother, Tracy Fodness of Dell Rapids, will be traveling with him to Craig’s Hospital and will be staying with him while he recovers.

Donations can be made to the fund.  STAY STRONG D.M.L bracelets are also for sale for $5.00 at the home football game tonight, or they can be purchased from Kassandra Steinke (605-212-6939).  The monies in the fund will be used to help cover the transportation cost to have him flown in an air ambulance and for anything he may need during his rehabilitation.

Lesselyoung is a graduate of Dell Rapids High School and just recently started college in Mitchell.

All Cardinal Varsity Cross Country Runners Qualify for State

DRSM LogoThe Dell Rapids St Mary boys and girls cross country teams participated in the Region 2A meet in Howard on Wednesday, October 16th.  All of the varsity runners qualified for the State meet to be held in Rapid City on October 26th.  Both the boys and girls teams finished 2nd in the Regions out of 17 teams.  The girls team finished with 21 points.  Hanson won the girls event with 18 points.  The boys finished with 15 points.  Elkton-Lake Benton won the boys event with nine points.

Wynell Murphy

Wynell MurphyWynell Lynn Murphy was born January 21, 1970. She passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013

She is survived by her husband, Mick and two children, Brittan 16 and Cale 12, her parents, Ervin and Judy Bietz, her siblings, Wanda Weber, Wayne Bietz, Wade Bietz and William Bietz.

The Murphy’s have made their home in Sioux Falls since 2002. During that time Wynell worked for Dell Rapids Chevy, but currently was an accountant for Midland National Life. Before moving to Sioux Falls, Minneapolis was their home for 8 years. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 am Monday, October 14, 2013 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 to 6:00 pm at Heritage Funeral Home and continue at the church at 6:30 pm with a Christian Wake Service at 7:30 pm. www.heritagesfsd.com

Patricia Marsh

Patricia MarshPatricia Elizabeth Marsh was born on October 31, 1924 in Rapid City, South Dakota, the daughter of Dora and Kenneth Peterson. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church and she grew up and attended school in Franklin prior to moving to Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She graduated from Dell Rapids High School in 1942. She then attended nurses training before moving to Midland, Michigan.

Patricia married Joseph Robert Marsh on June 3, 1944 in Midland, Michigan. They lived in Midland, Michigan from 1944 to 1945. They moved to Dell Rapids, South Dakota in 1945 and raised their family. In 1971 they moved to Mesa, Arizona and lived there until present. They celebrated 64 years of marriage in June 2008.

Patricia passed away on October 12, 2013 in Mesa, Az. She was 88 years old and was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Dora Peterson, her son Robert Charles Marsh, and her loving husband Joseph Robert Marsh who was grateful for having shared her life.

She was a member of the Dell Rapids Lutheran Church and many of the church organizations, Patty retired from J.C. Penney’s after 15 years, and she was very active in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives, and she also enjoyed golfing, bowling and bridge.

Grateful for having shared her life; her daughter, Mary Jo Gannon and husband John Gannon of Mesa, Az.; her two sons; James Marsh of Mesa, Az., Larry Marsh and wife Sherry Marsh of Sioux Falls, SD., her 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and her sister Peggy Drummond of Mesa, Az.

Sally Nebben

Sally NebbenSally Ann Nebben, 57, of Dell Rapids passed away Friday, October 11, 2013 at her home.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM with the family present at 5:00 PM and a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Sally Ann Leuning was born December 7, 1955 in Hendricks, MN to parents Howard “Hoot” and Phyllis (Pederson) Leuning. Sally and her brothers, Garry and Dean grew up on the family farm east of Hendricks. She attended Augustana College and received her LPN degree from Southeast Area Votech in 1976. She received her RN degree from the University of South Dakota in 1979.

Sally worked as a registered nurse in ICU at Sioux Valley Hospital. She also worked at the Madison and Dell Rapids hospitals as well as Palisades Manor Nursing Home.

Sally married Jay Nebben June 9, 1990 in Hendricks, MN. They resided on a farm near Dell Rapids. They were blessed with two children, Peter on May 15, 1995 and Jennifer on June 24, 1997. Sally loved caring for her children and had great compassion for others. She also loved animals, especially her dog, Rosie and cats, Thomas and Hannah. Sally was an amazing cook. She was known for her great lefse, lutefisk, krumkaka and Swedish cocoa meatballs.

Sally served on the Dell Rapids Ambulance Service and was a member of Dell Rapids Hospital Auxiliary, Patchwork Community Club and American Legion Auxiliary.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Jay Nebben; Dell Rapids; children Peter and Jennifer Nebben, Dell Rapids; mother, Phyllis Leuning, Hendricks, MN; brother, Garry (Dawn) Leuning and their children, Katie, Spencer and Parker, Hendricks ,MN; sister-in-law, Janelle (Randy) Hindbjorgen and sons, Landon and Austin Leuning, Crooks; father and mother-in-law, Art and Deloris Nebben, Dell Rapids; sisters-in-law Melanie (Lee) Burggraff and Jan Dybvig, Dell Rapids and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Leuning in 1998 and brother, Dean Leuning in 2005.

Quarrier Win Streak Comes to End

DellRapidsFootballLogoThe Dell Rapids Quarriers had their four-game winning streak come to an end in Hartford on Friday, October 11th.  The West Central Trojans defeated the Quarriers 35-7.  West Central held a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.  They extended the lead to 21-0 at halftime.  Dell Rapids cut the lead to 21-7 at the end of the third quarter, but the Trojans scored the final two touchdowns of the game.

The Trojans got on the board with 6:00 to go in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Jace Hanisch.  The second touchdown came on a 40-yard run by Cole Tirrel with 3:12 to go in the first.  West Central’s next score was with 8:28 to go in the second quarter on a two-yard run by Cody Miller.

Dell Rapids scored first in the second half with :33 to go in the third quarter.  Tanner Solberg threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Riley Schmidt.  But Miller would score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter for West Central on runs of six yards and two yards respectively.

Dell Rapids was held to just 116 total yards in the game, 79 rushing and 37 passing.  West Central had 300 total yards, 288 rushing and 12 passing.  Schmidt had 11 carries for only 40 yards in the game.  Brett Nichols had nine carries for 16 yards.  Tanner Solberg finished 2-5 for 37 yards and the touchdown.  Zach Schroeder had a catch for 37 yards.

Zach White led the Quarrier defense with 7.5 tackles in the game, including one for a loss.  Cody Nielsen had seven tackles, Jonathan DeNoon ended the game with six tackles, and Kahler Berven had 5.5 tackles.

The Quarriers fall to 4-2 on the year.  Dell Rapids will host the Tri-Valley Mustangs in their final home game of the year on Friday, October 18th.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Dell Rapids School Board Meeting: 10/14/13

The Dell Rapids School Board will meet in regular session on Monday, October 14th, at 7:00 p.m. in the MS/HS DDN Room.  Some of the items on the agenda include the approval of the Safe Routes to School grant requirements, a request for the archery club to be school sponsored, discussion on the old elementary building, and committee reports.  The full agenda can be found here.
