Marie Brobjorg

Marie BrobjorgMarie Brobjorg, 84, of Baltic, died peacefully on July 8, 2014 from complications of cancer at her daughter’s home near Colton where she spent her last few months being lovingly cared for by her family. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Saturday, July 12, 2014, at East Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Baltic. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday, at Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.

Marie was born on October 18, 1929 to Carl and Anna (Hall) Stangeland. She grew up in the Harrisburg area and graduated from Harrisburg High School. After graduation she worked at Manchester’s Biscuit Company. She married Arnold Brobjorg on June 15, 1957, at Luverne, Minnesota. After their marriage they moved to the family farm near Baltic where they raised their four children. She was a homemaker for many years and later worked 20+ years at the Holiday Inn. Marie worked more recently at Terrace Manor in Dell Rapids where she always enjoyed visiting with the residents as well as her co-workers during coffee breaks.

Marie was a longtime member of East Nidaros Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was active in WELCA. Marie enjoyed taking pictures, cooking, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, and working outdoors on her farm. But most importantly she treasured the time spent with her family and friends. She will be especially remembered for her kindhearted and easygoing manner and all around lovely personality.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Gloria (Joe) Schaefer of Eagan, Minnesota, Mark Brobjorg of Baltic, Sherrie (Tom) Welbig of Dell Rapids, and Terry Brobjorg of Baltic; eleven grandchildren: Christopher (Riley) Schaefer, Ashley (Joe) Henderson, Bryan Schaefer, Miranda Welbig, Sara Brobjorg, Brennan Welbig, Alyssa Schaefer, Taylor Brobjorg, Kenton Welbig, Joey Brobjorg, and John Brobjorg; three great-grandchildren: Kenson, Lexyn, and Tavyn Henderson; and two sisters-in law: Maurine Brobjorg of Pipestone, and Helen Brobjorg of Baltic.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; parents; brothers, Alan Stangeland and Orville Rust; and sisters: Lorna Evans and Corrine Thomas.

Renner Sends PBR to 4th Loss in a Row

PBRLogoDell Rapids PBR fell to the Renner Monarchs 8-1 on Sunday, July 6th, in Renner.  PBR jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after three singles in the inning, capped off by an RBI single by Kevin Krull.  Renner answered with five runs in the first two innings on seven hits.  The Monarchs added three more runs on a three-run home run by Jason Nyhouse.

Dale Solberg took the loss, pitching five innings giving up eight runs on 11 hits, three walks, two hit batters, and six strikeouts.  Dallas Schneiderman earned the win throwing six innings giving up one run on five hits, one walk, one hit batter, and struck out eight.  Matt Wilbur pitched the final three innings allowing no runs on no hits and one walk.

PBR drops to 9-13 on the year and will play Harrisburg on Tuesday, July 8th.

City Council Meeting: 7/7/14

The Dell Rapids City Council will meet in regular session on Monday, July 7th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Council Chambers.  Some of the items on the agenda include rezoning request first readings of ordinances 804 and 805, clarification on bid award for the library addition/renovation project, second readings on ordinances 801 and 802, 15th Street proposal to raise speed limit discussion, fire pit ordinance discussion, and the administrative report.

13/14 Dells-E Crushes Canova

The 13/14 Dells-E team cruised past Canova 10-1 on Thursday, July 3rd, at Volunteer Field in Dell Rapids.  Dell Rapids threatened to score in the first two innings by getting the lead-off hitter to third base without an out, but could not score in either inning.  However, in the third inning after getting the lead-off hitter to third base without an out, Dell Rapids finally broke through for two runs.  Dell Rapids continued to put the pressure on Canova by scoring five times in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead after four innings.  Dell Rapids added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the victory.

Adam Nagelhout lead the team offensively going 3-3 with a double, an RBI, and five stolen bases.  Logan Heim was 2-3 in the game with three RBI.  Tate Kolbeck and Alex Kringen also picked up hits for Dell Rapids.

Austin Ellingson pitched a complete game throwing seven innings allowing one run, which was unearned, on three hits, walking two, and striking out 11.

Dells-E improves to 8-4 while Canova fell to 11-2 in the I-29 League.

Madison Picks up Extra Inning Win over PBR

PBRLogoThe Madison Broncos scored five runs in the final two innings to force extra innings, and then won the game in the thirteenth over Dell Rapids PBR on Tuesday, July 1st.  PBR was leading 6-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning, but Madison scored four times, and then tied the game with two outs in the ninth inning on an RBI single by Brian Miller.  Neither team was able to score until the thirteenth inning.  Madison scored two times in the top of the inning on a bases-loaded walk and a fielder’s choice.

Mick Hoglund led Dell Rapids with two singles.  Dan Conrad, Nate Alfson, Matt Kolbeck, Blake Harms, and Colin Karst each had a single in the game.

Drew Eldeen pitched seven innings, striking out ten. Nate Alfson pitched into the thirteenth inning, picking up the loss. Matt Schoeber earned the win for Madison.

Dell Rapids PBR will play the Renner Monarchs in Renner on Sunday, July 6th at 7:30 p.m.  The game will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.

Candy Warwick

Candy L. Warwick, 62, Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at home from natural causes.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2014, 1:00 pm, at Heartland Funeral Home with Pastor Lee Green officiating.

Candy is survived by her husband, Dick; daughters, Crystal Kuhnert, Sioux Falls, Jenny Warwick, Sioux Falls, and Shannon Warwick, Dell Rapids; and one son , Steven Kuhnert, Sioux Falls; 11 grandchildren; two brothers and many nieces and nephews.

Robert “Bob” Burrell

Bob BurrellRobert “Bob” Sheldon Burrell, 74, of Pierre, SD, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Avera Mckennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. His memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior to the start of the service. A private committal service will be held in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.  Condolences may be left at www.kahlerfh.com.

Bob was born on February 26, 1940, the son of Robert and Kareen (Hacklander) Burrell at Montevideo, MN. He moved with his family to Dell Rapids in 1942. He grew up and attended school in Dell Rapids, graduating from Dell Rapids High School in 1958. After high school he attended the University of Nebraska and then graduated from Northern State University. He later received his masters degree from the University of South Dakota. He did his student teaching at Molbridge, SD and started his teaching career at Elkton, SD. He later taught math and science at Watertown, Pierre, Broadus, MT and Faith. He retired in 1998 and began a career in carpentry.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, back packing and hiking in the mountains with his dog, and all outdoor activities. Throughout his many years of teaching he mentored many young adults and he always had a special love for dogs.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his brother, Bruce (Judy) Burrell of Brookings; his sister, Barb (Merle) Davis of Dell Rapids; his nieces and nephews, Barry (Dawn) Burrell of Brooklyn Park, MN, Patty Burrell of Framingham, MA, Pam (John) Wells of Colorado Springs, CO, Brad (Tara) Burrell of Castlewood, Kari (Rob) Karst  and Jill Hansen both of Dell Rapids; his many great nieces and nephews and his dog, Libby.

State-wide Texting Ban In Effect

TextingWhileDrivingHouse Bill 1177, “Texting While Driving Ban”, became state law on Tuesday, July 1st.  The ban states that no one operating a motor vehicle on a highway is permitted to use a wireless electronic device to write, send, or read text-based communication messages.  The ban does not apply when:
1) the vehicle is lawfully parked
2) contacting any emergency public safety answering point or dispatch center
3) using the device to write, read, select or enter a telephone number/name to make or receive a phone call
4) using voice operated or hands free technology.

The violation of the texting ban is a secondary offense, meaning that the driver must be pulled over for another violation before being ticketed for texting.  The fine for texting while driving is $100.

No-Hitter Highlights Weekend for 13/14 Teeners

The Dell Rapids 13/14 Teeners went 3-1 over the weekend and took home second place at the Pipestone Watertower Tournament.  Dell Rapids sent one 13/14 team to the tournament…the same team that will be used for the Regional Tournament at the end of the season.  The team is made up of members of both the 13/14 Dells-M and 13/14 Dells-E teams.

The Pipestone tournament was a round-robin pool play tournament.  They played two games on Saturday, June 28th, and two games on Sunday, June 29th.  West Central 14’s won the tournament finishing with a 3-0-1 record.

Dell Rapids took a 6-3 lead into the final inning, but their defense gave out surrendering four unearned runs.  Carter Gullickson lead the way offensively going 2-3, and scoring two runs.  Keegan Miller added a double, a RBI and 2 runs.

Dell Rapids collected 14 hits to beat Pipestone 7 in a game cut short by time limit.  Keegan Miller was 3-3 with a double and three runs.  Logan Ruesink, Logan Heim, and Eddie Price each added two hits.

Dell Rapids trailed Pipestone 8 the entire game.  Down by two runds, Dells scored three times to win in walk-off fashion.  In the final inning, Cameron Bruhn added a hit, an RBI, and scored the winning run taking home on a wild pitch.  Adam Nagelhout scored twice on the day.

Austin Ellingson threw a compete game no-hitter for Dell Rapids vs Marshall.  The game was called after the 5th inning due to run rule.  On the offensive side, Austin Ellingston was 2-3 with a triple and a RBI.  Adam Nagelhout and Keegan Miller also added triples.  Jeffrey Schuch and Cameron Bruhn each added a double.

Benjamin “Benny” Dearduff

Benjamin DearduffBenny Dearduff, age 71 of Sioux Falls, SD, died Sunday June 29, 2014 at Sanford Medical Center. Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Thursday, July 3, at Miller Funeral Home 507 S. Main Avenue, with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army.

Benjamin Lee Dearduff was born in Sioux Falls, SD, on November 27, 1942, the son of Roger and Alice (Erickson) Dearduff. He joined the Army after graduation from Washington High School in 1960. He spent one year stateside and two years in Germany before being honorably discharged in 1963. He then worked in construction building house and as a tavern co-owner until 1965 when he became employed at the State Penitentiary where he worked until his retirement in 1997. He married Linda Evans in 1965. They were divorced in 1976. Ben married Nancy Anfinson on October 14, 1978.

Grateful for having shared his life are his granddaughter, Whitley Jo Dearduff, Denison, IA; his brother, Roger (Judy) Dearduff, Dell Rapids, SD; his sister in-law, Barb (Steve) Hayes, Sioux Falls; his brothers in-law, Roland (Rita) Anfinson, Pringle, SD, and Ricky (Sandy) Anfinson, rural Sherman, SD.
