Lois Skaar

Lois SkaarLois M. Skaar, 93, formerly of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Custer Regional Senior Care in Custer, SD. Her memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. The interment service will be on Saturday at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at 9:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 5, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church Chapel. Condolences may be left at www.kahlerfh.com

Lois M. Stangeland was born to Jonas and Carrie Stangeland on December 6, 1920 at Primghar, Iowa. She graduated from Gaza High School, Gaza, Iowa in 1939 and Waldorf College, Forest City, Iowa in 1941. She worked for the O’Brien County Abstract Company in Primghar, Iowa from 1941-1945. On May 27, 1945 she married E. S. Skaar at Paulina, Iowa. She was an active church member and Pastor’s wife in Cameron and Glenwood City, Wisconsin; Hudson, Dell Rapids, Sioux Falls, Britton, and Renner South Dakota. In 1987 she and E. S. retired in Sioux Falls. They moved to Prairie Creek Senior Living, Sioux Falls, SD in 2007. E. S. passed away in May of 2009. In June of 2013 she became a resident of the Custer Senior Care facility, Custer, SD.

She is survived by her brother, Elmer (June) Stangeland of Primghar, Iowa; her son, Jon (Jane) Skaar of Custer, SD; her daughter, Joy (Randy) Bisping of Spring Creek, Michigan; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

City Council Meeting – 12/1/14

The Dell Rapids City Council will meet in regular session starting at 7:30 p.m. on  Monday, December 1st, in the Council Chambers.  Some of the items on the agenda include an update on a potential ice skating rink, declaration of surplus items, 2015 fire department agreement, and the administrator’s report.  The full agenda can be found by clicking here.

The regular session meeting will be webcast on Big Sioux Media.  The council will enter into an executive session after the completion of the regular session.

Margaret Crisp

Margaret CrispMargaret Crisp, 83, of Dell Rapids passed away on Friday, November 28, 2014 at her home. Her funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 will begin at 1:00 p.m. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home. Margaret was born in Colton, SD, on August 30, 1931 to Andrew and Ida (Burgers) DeJong. She grew up and attended school in Colton. She graduated from Colton High School in 1950. She worked in Sioux Falls until she was married. She married Raymond Crisp on November 28, 1953. They couple made their home on a farm east of Dell Rapids.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in Dell Rapids. Margaret loved to visit with people. She enjoyed the farm and going out to eat with Raymond.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Raymond of Dell Rapids; her son, Gary (Linda) Crisp of Brandon; her daughters, Nancy (Curt) Andersen of Norfolk, NE and Cindy Crisp of Dell Rapids; her grandchildren, Timothy (Kimberley) Bares of Acton, CA and Jessica (Josh) Willprecht of Dell Rapids; her great grandson, Jacob; her brother, John DeJong of Sioux Falls; her sisters, Julia (Dean) Amdahl and Carol (Doug) Biegger both of Loveland, CO and her many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Harold Geffre

Harold GeffreFuneral services for Harold M. Geffre, 86, of Leola will, be on November 22, 2014, at 2:00 pm, at St James Lutheran Church, Leola SD. Followed by burial at Green Mound Cemetery. Harold died on November 15th, 2014 of natural causes. The family prefers memorials in lieu of flowers.

Harold Marvin Geffre was born on the family farm, north of Leola on July 18,1928, to Louis and Emma (Lechner) Geffre. He attended country school, then farmed with his parents. On September 12, 1948, Harold married Lea Schnaidt at Leola. They spent 34 years farming. In the late 70’s Harold started trucking. He left the farm in 1982 and moved to Eureka, continuing the trucking business until 2004. On December 20, 1984, he married Kathy Kunkle. He continued to live in Eureka, until moving to Leola in 2011, where he resided until his death.

Harold was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed old time music, playing accordion and harmonica, fishing, rodeos, and working with cattle and horses. Harold was very well known throughout the area with his trucking business. He hauled livestock and grain for many producers in the region. Harold’s sons and grandsons have carried on the trucking tradition. He was an avid fisherman. If he wasn’t on the road, he could be found fishing.

Harold is survived by 3 sons: Roy (Mary) Geffre, Aberdeen; Ray Geffre, Leola; and Ron (Pam) Geffre, Wautauga, Texas; and daughters: Vickie (Robert) Moser, Leola; Vonnie (Dean) Kalt, Watertown; Debbie (Curtis) Bietz, Rapid City; and Julie (Channon) Stange, Dell Rapids. Harold is survived by wife, Kathy Geffre, Aberdeen, 3 step children: Anita (Larry) Malsom, Aberdeen; Rick (Lisa) Kunkle, Sioux Falls; and Jim (Amanda) Kunkle, Aberdeen. He is survived by 25 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren. Also surviving are: Harold’s brother, Gerald (Betty) Geffre, Leola; sister Irene Jensen, Redfield; brother-in-law, Garrold Friese, Watertown; many nieces and nephews, and special longtime friend, Jimmy Kolb, Long Lake.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Darlene Friese; brother-in-law, Wayne Jensen, and granddaughter, Cindy Moser Casey.  Condolences may be left at www.grammfuneralhome.com

Quarrier Athletic Surplus Sale

NewDRLogoThose interested in owning a piece of Quarrier history and showing Quarrier Spirit are in luck.  This winter the Dell Rapids School District will be selling surplus jerseys and athletic equipment.  This sale will be done in two parts.

Part one of the surplus sale will be an auction-style sale and will start on Monday, December 1st.  Bids can be made with LuAnn at the district office for football jersey numbers of the uniforms worn by varsity last year and prior years.  This auction-style sale for both the black and white varsity football uniforms is intended to give everyone who may want those jerseys and numbers a fair chance to get them.  The bids will come to an end at the close of school on Friday, December 19th.

The second part of the surplus sale will include any of the football jerseys that were not sold along with older track sweats, cheer outfits, basketball jerseys, football pants, volleyball tops, golf gear, along with some other possible treasures.  This part of the sale will be a rummage-type sale and will take place at three home basketball games.  The three dates are January 3rd, January 6th, and January 9th.

Marilee Casanova

Marilee CasanovaMarilee Casanova, age 60, died at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls on November 25, 2014.

Marilee Ann Goodale was born on September 21, 1954 at Dell Rapids to Gerald and Geraldine (Wolles) Goodale. She married Robert Casanova on June 19, 1976 at Huntimer, SD.

She is survived by her husband – Robert. One son – Brett (Connie) of Yankton and one daughter – Holly Casanova of Dell Rapids and a grandson – Kellen. Her father – Gerald Goodale of Chester, SD. Three brothers – Terry (Michelle) Goodale and Ken (Kathy) Goodale, both of Chester and Doug (Stacey) Goodale of Sioux Falls. Four sisters – Sheila (Steve) Ingram of Ft Pierre, SD, Cinda (Steve) Pankratz, Angie (Mark) Quissell and Jan (John) Smallcomb, all of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother in infancy.

Funeral Mass will be held at 2:30 PM on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at St William Catholic Church in Ramona, SD with Rev Paul Josten officiating. Burial will be in St Mary Cemetery in Dell Rapids.

She grew up in Chester, graduating from Chester Area High School. She received a B.S. in Nursing from SDSU in 1976. She worked at the Madison Community for three years before working at the Madison Clinic for 38 years. She also worked at Ramona Assisted Living for 10 years. She was active in St William Parish where she was pianist for the choir.

There will be a parish scripture service at 7:00 PM on Friday at St William Church in Ramona. Condolences may be left at www.weilandfuneralchapel.com

Bernette Waltner

Bernette P. Waltner was born on Feb. 5, 1927 to Paul Stahl and Susie (Pullman) Stahl in Sully County. She married Leo Waltner and they celebrated 68 years of marriage. To this union was born two daughters Nadine and Connie.

Bernette died peacefully in her sleep Nov 23 at Dell Rapids Nursing home. Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, five grandchildren Brigette, Jeremy, Kasey Pirrung, Nadia, Nicole Maslowski and five great grandchildren.

There will be no services.

Water Rates to Increase

DellRapidsTowerWater rates within the city limits of Dell Rapids will increase starting December 20th.  The Dell Rapids City Council approved the second reading and adoption of ordinance 812 on Monday, November 17th, during their regular meeting.  The rate will increase by 3%.  The increase in rates will be spread across the base rate and an increase per 1,000 gallons used.

The base rate will increase from $9.88 to $10.00.  The rate per 1,000 gallons used will increase from $4.26 to $4.37.  The average water bill will increase by a total of $.67 per month.

Alderman David Sommerfeld made the motion to approve the second reading and adoption with the second coming from Alderman Mike Geraets.  The roll-call vote passed 7-0.

Funeral services are 11:30 AM, on Saturday, November 22, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton with Reverend David Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the funeral service.
